5960 kHz Bureau of Meteorology, Australia

The Australian Bureau of Meterology station in Broadmeadows, Victoria, popped up enough to give an id here in New Zealand this evening. They appear to be running two data service - Journaline plus Web site transmission, but no chance of decoding anything here

Thanks to Frank in Australia for finding the details in the ACMA database.

They also appear to be licensed for 13750 kHz, but I haven't heard of any reports of that.

Cheers, Chris

Hi All

Apparently BoM is actually sending real-time earthquake & tsunami information. Thanks to Nigel at RA for the following little bit of info:

Quote:
The BoM service comes from Melbourne. With 1 kW rms (or less) into an omni-directional & high take-off angle aerial the mechanics of the system discriminate against long haul transmission. The signal is great in Melbourne during the day of course. I missed the early telephony streaming test, but Mode C, 8QAM & 8.64 kb/s gives a robust service for Journaline purposes. It's fascinating to watch pages of information on seismic activity from around the south Pacific and SE Asia updating in real-time. I guess our BoM has access to this because it was "designated" the Australian agency concerned with identifying tsunami threats & disseminating alerts. They didn't think much of this proposal at the time ("earthquakes aren't a meteorological event!") but some money was found for them so they cope.
Here in New Zealand the best I've been able to decode is the title of the Journaline

Cheers, Chris

Fascinating and a nice application for DRM. The world needs more novel applications of DRM.

Hi All

Noted BoM poking up above the static here tonight, but not enough to decode any of their data

Cheers, Chris
