27th May

The signal came up later than usual this afternoon. I could not log until the end, as I had to leave the house.

Today's contribution did not produce much audio either.

Signal, yes, but it is gradually getting weaker every day. I wonder if this phenomenon is depending on the season? This log is about one hour long. There are usually two openings every day: One around 13 UTC which is generally weaker and shorter than the second opening that usually starts between 15 and 1530 UTC and lasts for up to two hours, sometimes even longer.

Not so today. The early bit failed and the "normal" segment came late. Just when I came back from my daily trip to the post office just after 1600 UTC the first traces were visible in the SNR History. But today's segment was shorter than normal. The enclosed log is about 30 minutes long. The max. SNR was about 10 dB, which was 4 dB too short to produce any sound.

I have an intriguing theory which I cannot (yet) prove:
Do I perhaps receive this Rwanda transmitter from 5900 km away "via satellite"?

Old Faithful came up today again, but the Fading left almost no room for decoding. Again some periods of rather high SNR.

New month, new adventures. 9 seconds CDA this afternoon
More than 100 minutes of signal, then sporadic.

A later pop-up today, which almost buries my "satellite reception" theory.

Traces of DRM began around 1428 UTC today. Nearby heavy thunderstorms hampered the segment 1545 - 1705 UTC. No sound at all.

Surprise, surprise: Rwanda popped up at 1802 again, still hampered by QRN from lightning, but this late segment was much stronger and produced fragments of decoded audio around 1822 UTC.

Average SNR for Rwanda, May 2007

Hi,

Just for fun I have tried to plot an average SNR curve of Kigali DRM on 25740 kHz. The curve represents an average collected from the May data I had left on my computer. These are the days included in the plot: 15.05, 16.05, 17.05, 18.05, 20.05, 21.05, 22.05, 23.05, 26.05, 27.05, 28.05, 29.05, 30.05 and 31.05.2007. The Y-Axis scale is not relevant - the plot shows the relative signal strength calculated from the (average) SNR value.

There is a definitive maximum between 15:30 - 16:45 every day, and this maximum seems to be the same time whatever good or bad the ionospheric conditions may be. And this over a distance of roughly 5900 km. On 25 MHz.

Still I ask myself: Is this signal received by ionospheric reflection(s) or is it perhaps a "satellite transmission" ?

First part covers 153 minutes which includes a 50 minutes null reception from around 1610 UTC.

Then a little "Zugabe" from 1808 UTC for a little more than 30 minutes. There was French and local languages. Max SNR for this part was 20.2 dB (!). Remarkable, the S-Meter does not even budge from zero !

No signal during the "normal" segment this afternoon. Saw a trace for a second or two. Perhaps the Event 92 (a C9.7 flare) burned off the F2 layer

The "satellite reception" theory is out. But according to some external help (thanks to xfielder) reception via 2 F2 hops could be a possibility here in the late afternoon.

Look! A treat later tonight, discovered just by chance. Old Faithful did not let me down.

No signal in the "normal" segment around 16 UTC. This segment might not be "normal" any more from now on.

Today I got only 33 minutes with quite a weak signal. The lightning in the vicinity did not help much either

If the trend follows the prognosis, it seems like I will loose this interesting DX station.

When I first bumped into it on 28th April (the day I had to leave to pick up guests at Zuerich Airport and could not attend the transmission) the best season seems to have been over already according to plots I got this afternoon. This remains to be seen next year in February or March - a time of the year you normally would just forget about 25 MHz.

Interesting anyway...

Today was awesome:
1440 - 1512 with max. 10 dB SNR
1533 - 1603 with max. 11 dB SNR

Then the log below from 1606 - 1828 UTC with some sound and max 18 dB SNR.
About 3 minutes of decoded audio stuck in my 32 MB waw file.

The signal was still there when I changed to CVC from Santiago.
