Reactivated?

Hi, sorry for the delay, kind of a funny week.

VoN was back on in DRM last Monday, 5/28, not heard since.

Worth checking though.

Good to know. Thanks.

I was just saying today, on a radio discussion group on Facebook, that no one had reported it here since February!

I have been checking two or three times a week, including today (Sunday 3/6) but will check more often now that I know you've heard them recently.

Thursday 26/7/18 afternoon (1915 UTC), I am hearing a fairly strong audio of DRM-whoosh on 15120 kHz. Strange sound, though, as if some audio is mixing into it. On my MR27024 the label ("Voice of Nigeria") shows with few breaks indicating drops in the signal below the level to carry the label. But no DRM is being decoded. The MER never shows higher than 3.0 dB and almost all the time is showing 0.0 dB.

The AM-modulated whoosh has a 2 Hz beat in it, which is to say that ten times in five seconds I hear a repetitive sound, like the bass sound of a dance song. And there is a hint of higher-pitched audio as if AM is mixing into the DRM signal.

Anyone else hearing this?

Downtown St. John's, Newfoundland; Satellit 750 (for AM) and MorphyRichards 27024 (for DRM), each on an 8m wire antenna.

By the way, the V Nigeria DRM was strong enough to change my MorphyRichards's clock . . . to the wrong time!

I've noticed this for several years -- Nigeria's DRM will (unlike several other stations) change my clock but, although the date is usually correct, the time is not. So my clock now reads 0135 on 26/7/18 while the real time is 1945 on that date.

But fixing the time is *waaay* easier on the MR than fixing the date.

back on DRM

Hi,
you guys are fast. Before I could post here that VoN is back in DRM, you already caught them.
There have been some issues with the transmitter that was dedicated for the DRM. It took some time to fix it but seems like they were successful.

I was told they are now back on 15.120 daily from 18-19UTC (not sure if time zone got mixed up). They are using the curtain antenna to the north (4x4 dipoles) and about 120kW DRM.

Reports are most welcome. Also screenshots or short videos on youtube might help to keep this station running in DRM. I am happy to forward reports, pictures, ect to them.

Regarding the time issue... the GPS clock failed. I found that last time I was there but I couldn't fix it. I didn't think this would be an issue and I didn't know that DRM can even change the time on the RX. Very interesting.

Thanks for the report, and I'll make more reports to them directly, or here, in the future.

Today, 1 Aug 2018, just before 1900 UTC, the V Nigeria DRM signal is varying between 3 dB and 10 dB MER -- mostly too low for audio decode, though on some of the signal peaks (for example, at 1858) I have heard about two seconds of music, and then it disappears again.

Downtown St. John's, Newfoundland. MR27024 + 8 m wire.

Further to what I just posted, after 1900 I turned on my little-used Avion DR1401 set, attached to the inside loop antenna (Sony AN-LP1). It is decoding better than the MR27024 with an outdoor antenna. It is still a very low proportion -- about 30% I would estimate. The MER is reading similarly (3 to 10 dB).

I do not hear an improvement in audio from before the weeks of being off-air.

I appreciate the information, Philip. I've been trying to receive VoN to no avail lately. At least, I know VoN is still broadcasting when you post your results so please keep doing so.

Aug 8th, 2018 partial log ... It's nice to see VoN back on shortwave despite the lack of xHE-AAC and a problem with my power utility spewing RF all over the SW bands. RFI significantly degraded the signal.
