Very good signal from them this evening, showing GOS-IV on channel 1 and RAGAM on Channel 2.

. . . which made me wonder why I can't see anything in Japan. In the past there was more or less always a signal visible in DReaM about one hour before and up to close down at 2230 UTC. So, this morning I let DReaM "watch" 7550 kHz from 2220 UTC during my breakfast. When I looked again at 0010 UTC there was a 12 minutes segment visible in DReaM, but I have no idea when the signal was received. Tomorrow I'll log 7550 kHz and see what happens.

Interesting, even though the English Service to Europe finished at 2230 UTC, there is still a weak DRM carrier on 7550 kHz at 2315. I can't get any audio from it as it's far too weak, but the ID display is showing 'MAIN CHANNEL' and 'SECOND CHANNEL'. Wonder if AIR are doing some tests?

Could it be the same phenomenon as Radio France (TDF) many years ago? They switched off the main transmitter, but some power leaked through from the exciter to the antenna. The distance to the TX in those days was about 470 km...

Hi Terje,

That's certainly possible, I would probably have not even noticed it was there if I hadn't checked it on the waterfall display, it will be interesting to see if it does the same tonight. I'll try and catch it at 2230 and see if the carrier drops to that level at that time, or just fades down gradually.

European beam at 320 deg:
1745-2230 UTC - 7550 kHz DRM

Japanese beam at 90 deg:
2245-0045 UTC - 7550 kHz DRM

Absolutely no signal on 7550 kHz at my QTH in Shizuoka City (Japan), nor on a Kiwi-RX in Nagano-ken. But in Shenzhen (China) there is a signal with splatter from a Chinese AM station 10 kHz up. That AM signal I can hear here at my place too. Maybe AIR should tweak their antennas a bit?

Okay, the "Japanese beam" at 90 deg is rather an Indonesian beam, CIRAF 49,50,54 according to HFCC.

That's why they have to tweak the beam!

Yeah, the curvature of the earth sends that eastward beam considerably south of the Japan. I, too, want AIR to tweak that beam considerably so it's aimed much further north, maybe 45 degrees or so. Maybe, an action a bit stronger than tweaking is needed for that eastward beam. Personally, I'd like that beam moved to an azimuth of ~ 25 degrees from Bangalore.

No amount of tweaking is going to thwart propagation, at this frequency, which in this case, is limited in the east (by daylight) and favours the west (night time).

At 2300z, even though the transmission is beamed due east, the back of the beam actually covers the lower part of Florida (see attachment) and there is a stronger signal towards Brazil.

A result for 96 mins until the signal disappeared. ~53% CDA, 25.5dB max SNR.
