RTE sportscast on 17495 kHz/ 11735 kHz

Hi all,

"Coverage of the All Ireland Hurling final"
Just from curiosity I tune the RX on this frequency and with the help of a manual preselector I managed to rise the faint signal over the noise and I got the attached graph for 20 mins. The sound below 12 db SNR was unintelligible.

EDIT 15:18: I am monitoring the programme. After 15:00 the signal got stronger and the SNR reached up to 24 dB.

The direction is 170 degrees. Is that normal when you want to reach Europe from the Isles?

RTE sportscast on 11735 kHz

Hi,

This my first try on this RTE sportscast. A very difficult frequency due to AM QRM from +/- 5 kHz.
Time: 16:15 - 16:32 UTC. Not much audio, CELP @ 14.1 kbps, 8.5 % CDA.

A weak signal at the beginning, got stronger later but still lots of dropouts. Audio sounded quite good when decoding was possible.
I also got some audio when using the Roberts MP40 with its telescopic antenna indoors.

Sept. 02

Hi all,

It was impossible to receive anything on this frequency due to the QRM by 3 AM TXs.

@Simone : I think the threads for 17495 and 11735 must be merged to one with the header : "RTE sportscast on 17495 / 11735 kHz".

edit: Threads merged, Simone

edit: Thanks !, John

Signal on the lower frequency was much stronger, unfortunately two periods with interference.

Thanks for the posts. I think the 170 degrees was aimed at Southern France, Portugal and Spain, where a lot of Irish people live. Unfortunately no reception reports from those areas!

Hi drmdab,
I guess you are just not in the target area, not being in the target area either, I only get a weak signal.

Hi Simone

Yes, that's it. So I'm going to turn to RRI on 9600 kHz.

By the way, the only DRM transmission from Flevo I can receive is beamed to south Europe.

Edit: Argh, even no signal from Wertachtal!

RTÉ DRM

Now a better signal on 11735 kHz, first time I have this language on my screen!

Signal is about 11db, suddenly it went down to 3 dB and audio was interruped (sounds funny at CELP ).

It was the first CELP transmission I have ever heard and I was surprised of the good quality. I think CELP sounds better than AAC mono!

Good reception in the first minutes but the signal went down (QRM of AM stations? change of tx antennas?) and my notebook's battery was suddenly empty (--> QRM of charger) .

Look forward to more DRM transmissions of RTÉ on shortwave! Any plans?

Sept. 16

Hi all,

Gaelic football final from Croke Park in Dublin

That's the result here. A weak signal and strong QRM by 3 AM TXs but a not too bad result, there were also periods with very good results.
The CELP sound below ~10 db SNR was unintelligible.

Signal was quite weak, anyway rather good decoding with the robust signal using mode A this time, below 9 dB SNR there wer too many artefacts, otherwise pretty good audio quality.
