Although I was rushing around this morning, getting ready to leave the house, I was able to check a few times the special DRM broadcast on 11970 kHz from Babcock, Wooferton, in the first hour of its transmission. It was aimed down across southern Europe, rather than out to the west towards me. So it's no surprise I heard nothing.

I checked at 1000 UTC, and again at 1015, 1030 and 1050.

I was not able even to raise a label on my Morphy-Richards 27024 set (with eight-metre wire aerial). The MER ratio was so low as to show 0 dB each time I looked. However, the 27024 does show the word "Tuning" when it thinks there may be something there, and about two-thirds of the time while I was staring at the screen, it showed that word. That seems to indicate something was there in the nothingness that I was hearing.

I also checked with my (new) XHData set to see if I could actually hear the DRM whooshy sound in AM mode. I couldn't distinguish anything above the white noise of the 31mb. I tried the XHData both with its whip antenna and with the Sony loop antenna (AN-1) that I had next to it.

So, no luck. Oh well. I'll try again tomorrow if I can.

BBC DRM 11970 / 13845 for GA in Mallorca 18th April 2018

The target area is an island off the east Spanish coast so any reception outside Europe would be of interest. Having said that, we had a successful reception report today from further south in Virginia.

There has been a correction to the broadcast tomorrow:

1000-1100 will be on 11970 kHz
1100-1200 will be on 13845 kHz

Various European SDRs and Naples, FL

Thanks for putting this on and for adjusting the schedule.

I tried via various SDRs in Western Europe. Best via ones in Spain and Portugal,
but even there only about 50% copy. I could get the initial Journaline screen but the various items did not load.

Absolutely no signal in Naples, FL, USA.

Some signal reached as far as New Zealand, but a huge AM signal on 11965 kHz (KTWR I think) didn't help. 0% decoding.

Cheers, Chris

This morning, Weds 18 April 2018, I actually got the label of the BBC World Service on 11970 kHz. (I took a picture of it! ) The label was there every time I checked through the first hour (1000-1100 UTC). The MER, however, was very low, and never more than 0 dB when I checked, so there was no audio here.

The second frequency (13845 kHz in the second hour, 1100-1200 UTC) was weaker still, and there was no label, nor even the indication that the Morphy-Richards set was "Tuning."

Downtown St. John's, Newfoundland, MR27024 set with eight-metre wire aerial.

Very weak signal on 11970 kHz here in New Zealand today. No sign of any signal on 13845 kHz. I didn't bother taking any logs.

Cheers, Chris
