Ah, the goal post has been moved again, not going to be too negative on this as I expected this, even RTL people seem very concerned at all the delays. |

Then in Auguest the'll say December and that's another year gone by waiting It's the internet radio streams which are killing it. When you can get 1000's of mostly good quality (stereo) stations via the net plus soon to be city / country wide wireless DRM is effectivly dead. I hope not but in this internet everywhere world now it's not helping

True but ask yourself why they are discouraged ? In fact they are totally uninterested. Yes internet in the car will soon be a reality thanks to city wireless access like in London and Bristol and 8 other locations in the UK very soon. I'm sure Germany and many other countries have or will have just the same deal... Car radios which wirelessly link to the net I'm sure will be on the market soon...

If the competitors were really interested, they would take their chance since there is now a delay in the current prototype-to-market process of receivers based on the Radioscape module. But nothing... It's also a shame what happened a few years ago: There was once a heavily funded EU-project which had the (published) goal of producing a DRM chip. A few companies absorbed the money and nothing emerged, not even a downloadable report can be found. It's the european tax payer's money - our money - that was burnt! Update: You can read more about this 30 million EUR (!) project named "DIAM Eureka" in this pdf file. There was also another 4 million EUR (!) project funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research which went under the name "Radiomondo", no chips have emerged from this one as well. What a waste of money! Roland |

...but they will be pretty useless for a long time when driving from town A to town B with 100km of nothing in between. Just got mail from http://www.robertsradio.co.uk/ today answering my question when we will see DRM receivers from them. When reading these papers one does not get the impression that, so far, there is anything near a DRM-capable chip using such an architecture. Not in the next three years, if you ask me! Roland |

This looks more promising...
Philips car DSP chips
More infos (dated Sept. 2005) in this press release. Validation is going on, production chips may be expected within 3month. If you want to write your own software, this is what you might want to use... Problem is that after design there is lot of paper work to comply with all that regulations of safety, EMC, "Produkthaftung", environmental legislation (amount of lead in the chips and solder is only one example) and different specifications of different car manufacturers to get a thing into a car. Next problem is that not any of todays cars has an antenna system that is capable of SW above 6.5MHz, if at all. Third: not any of today's cars allows satisfactory shortwave reception above 6.5MHz because of massive interference of all those electronic stuff communicating back and forth through the car. Generally: DRM will more than double the price of the tuner part of a radio, and to show the advantage to the customer (car manufacturer e. g.) you need something more than 3.5kHz or 5kHz audio as presented by Deutsche Welle for most of the day... Some more thoughts on the complexity of car radios (and customer requirements / in German). Quote:

Its Ground Hog Day! with the announcement of a new DRM receiver in India I thought I'd review the products we've been hoping or waiting for during the decade
So I found the appropriate thread starting with the original post which seems every bit up to date with the current scene, other than a few models which have come and gone in the meantime. Here is an update to fill in the gaps: Newstar DR111 - Mirics Msi002 chip Newstar W608 board - Mirics Msi001 based Uniwave - Mirics Msi001 based - discontinued MsWay DR100 - PNP chipset PN3034? - projects terminated 3/2012 MsWay USB stick - DRM+ / FM only Kenwood KDC-W7563U DRM - prototype only Sarapulsky RP 229 DRM - Radioscape 500 module - projects terminated 2012 Sarapulsky portable Starwaves truckbox - Radioscape module Technisat - Radioscape module Mayah 2010 - Radioscape module, last date Q4/2003 Morphy Richards / Roberts - Radioscape module This is not meant to be critical comment on any of the manufacturers, who were for many reasons unable to get a product to completion in the market on a sustainable basis. I thank them for trying. It kept me busy with my test transmitter for a while, in the hope that I'd be able to buy a DRM car radio - had to settle for one with a digital front end - that does Shortwave. Ralph Quote:

Avion AV-DR-1401
Hi Ralph, thanks for the comprehensive list of DRM receivers, many of which I have never heard of before!
There is a picture of the new receiver on Alokesh Gupta Radioactivity web page. http://alokeshgupta.blogspot.co.uk/
