7 Nov 2017 : RRI on 5980 kHz from Galbeni

No DRM received, plot looks like just an AM carrier, don't think it was anything to do with the geomagnetic storm.

21:00-00:00 UTC Planetary K-index: 6-. Local K-index: 5.
00:00-03:00 UTC Planetary K-index: 6+. Local K-index: 5.

Planetary A-index: 32. Solar flux: 69. EISN Sunspot number: 0.
Sunset 16:25 UTC.

Hi Neil,

It was all in AM last night, so it will be interesting to see if they used DRM again at all, or if these are just occasional tests. There does seem to be a few listeners in North America hearing the DRM signals, it would be nice if they'd make it a regular service for them.

I'm confused how can it be excellent reception if the decoded audio is 0%?

The DRM was back on again last night (Wednesday), wonder if they're alternating the days?

I'm basing the reception on factors other than decoding since the use of 64 QAM on shortwave is a bad idea to say the least. Notice the "If only" part ...

8 Nov 2017 : RRI on 5980 kHz from Galbeni

There was only 3% decoded audio during the transmission.

21:00-00:00 UTC Planetary K-index: 5-. Local K-index: 5.
00:00-03:00 UTC Planetary K-index: 4. Local K-index: 4.

Planetary A-index: 46. Solar flux: 67. EISN Sunspot number: 0.
Sunset 16:24 UTC.

Looking at our reports since the beginning of B17, the following pattern appears.

Sunday 29 Oct, 5 Nov DRM
Monday 30 Oct, 6 Nov DRM
Tuesday 31 Oct, 7 Nov AM
Wednesday 1 Nov, 8 Nov DRM
Thursday 2 Nov AM
Friday 3 Nov DRM
Saturday 4 Nov DRM

Based on this it should be AM on Thursday 9th November.

Nov 9th, 2017 log ... The signal was there, but so was Cuba on 5990 kHz who has never learned to properly parallel park on the shortwave bands.

9 Nov 2017 : RRI on 5980 kHz from Galbeni

As with most of my DRM predictions I was wrong! Instead of AM there was a DRM signal with 99% decoded audio during the transmission.

21:00-00:00 UTC Planetary K-index: 4. Local K-index: 4.
00:00-03:00 UTC Planetary K-index: 3+. Local K-index: 3.

Planetary A-index: 22. Solar flux: 67. EISN Sunspot number: 0.
Sunset 16:22 UTC.

Nov 10th, 2017 partial log ...

OT Rant (Mild compared to my real desire):

I want this pest, Cuba, removed from shortwave. I thank God that I live a reasonable distance away from Cuba. Maybe, the VoA should stop their programming to Cuba (Radio Marti) which is jammed by Cuba and replace it with 250 kW jammer powered partially by a solar array. Return the favor...

If anyone is still up, or up early, you might like to check 6145 kHz as the 0500 GMT broadcast in Romanian is currently going out in DRM, and is putting quite a good signal into this area. The transmitter is Galbeni TX1, and 20.96 kbps Mono.

I was just waiting up for the Russian broadcast at 0530 on 5940 kHz, I wanted to confirm this one is in DRM if audible (just hope I don't nod off before then!) :-D

Nov 12th, 2017 log with the result above average for my location, i.e. ~ a SNR of 6 dB. When the average SNR is above 10 dB, I'll classify the result as excellent. The decoding remains in the hands of the broadcaster to use a sane configuration of 16 QAM for the MSC.

Two notes which regular readers already know:

1. Significant interference from Cuba on 5990 kHz until they're removed.
2. Poor digital configuration by RRI.
