RNZI @ 11690 kHz

Ambient Conditions: 38 F @ surface, RH 59 %, clear, average noise, PC on, M2 off ( 1 dB loss )

I won't rate this partial log, but reception was much better than expected for my location, time of night, and season of the year. However, IF RNZI wants coverage of western parts of the NA continent including Canada during the northern winter, they'll have to revert to using a frequency in the 41 meter band during the early morning hours here or early evening hours there.

Ambient Conditions: 45 F @ surface, RH 45 %, overcast, average noise, PC & M2 off ( 0 dB loss )

Although noisy, I can currently comprehend the audio of RNZI's analog broadcast on 11725 kHz while RNZI's digital broadcast on 11690 kHz is currently decoding at a SNR of ~ 9 dB on my DR111. Clearly, more power is needed. Let's have power levels for digital broadcasts at 60% of analog instead of the 40%, please. If my DR111 actually saves the log, I'll post it within the hour as I'm removing power from my main PC in a vain attempt to increase the SNR by one more dB.

Update: Eureka! The problem was due to my use of three temporarily installed 6' unshielded cables with 3.5 mm plugs that remain to be replaced. I must have been initially mistaken as the rise of 6 dB @ 0704Z must have been when I removed power to my main PC. Anyway, back to logging reception of digital broadcasts.

I can't explain this erratic log at all, i.e. the sudden MASSIVE rises in SNR. Does Rangitaiki use a rotatable antenna? Atmospheric noise bordered on high throughout the broadcast. At least, I was able to hear part of an excellent rendition of "Silent Night" by the Christchurch Sacred Heart Church's Christmas Choir.

BTW, I'm now receiving RNZI @ 9870 kHz at a solid 21 dB, but I don't plan on logging it tonight. Although something (PC off) is causing these MASSIVE changes in SNR, I can't explain them. I'll have to continue my monitoring.

Another unexplainable log on this frequency ... If possible due to the absence of interference, RNZI, drop 17675 kHz and substitute 13730 kHz in its time slot. If possible, drop 13730 kHz from its current time slot and substitute 11690 kHz in its place. Next, drop 11690 kHz from its current time slot and substitute 9870 kHz in its place. Lastly, drop 9870 kHz from its current time slot and substitute a frequency in the 41 meter band in its place. Hummm, you USED to do something similar. RNZI may be the Voice of the South Pacific, but they certainly aren't the Voice of the Pacific.

I won't rate this partial log, but there was no strange behavior this morning.

Ambient Conditions: -11 F @ surface, but other measurements unknown, PC & M2 off ( 0 dB loss )

Decoded Audio: Unacceptable

Notice at 0712Z that the SNR suddenly jumps ~ 5 dB (average) which was due to removing power from my operating PC ( 2 dB loss) and Nanostation M2 (3 dB loss). Normally at this frequency, the loss is less from the M2. Ice?

The maximum SNR of 13 dB is erroneous.

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire .... Oh yeah, we don't have chestnuts in Montana.

Ambient Conditions: 27 F @ surface, RH 78 %, partly overcast, average noise, PC & M2 off ( 0 dB loss )

Decoded Audio: Excellent

Quality content is truly between the ears of the listener and most content from public broadcasters is mere propaganda from the state in my opinion. Personally, I'd rather listen to Brother Staire than state broadcasters. More commercial, independent broadcasters and less propaganda from state broadcasters will help DRM succeed. As a LPAM broadcaster, I soon hope to use DRM for disseminating quality content to my local community as I begin broadcasting mysteries and conspiracies for the critical thinker. As a beginning point, let's have the return of the Disco Palace to NA.

The content was humorous with SoS, the Lively Cowboys, etc and the music was superb. Every human needs a brief escape from reality periodically or they'll go insane. Unfortunately, most people including comedians don't know when to stop and eventually stray over the line. This set remained on target and I enjoyed it. Thanks, RNZI!
