Unhappy 14 October log

Well, well, well. Sackville is on the ball today. Music started right away, both
the FAC and SDC are correct for TDP.

Only one little criticism: the audio is still coming across as about a 98% right
channel, 2% left channel mix. VERY lopsided. One thing I've noticed about the
parametric stereo mode is that it seems very susceptible to what appear to be minor fluctuations in SNR. Only a few tenths of a dB down, and the audio does a quick fadeout, fadein. I would not be surprised if this isn't normal because of the added complexity of two distinct channels being subjected to signal fading. It is as if one channel gets out of phase and starts cancelling the channel that isn't out of phase.

Zyg's disease hit me today: starting at around 0035Z, so many hits to the signal started coming that almost no audio was decoded. SNR has also deteriorated badly as well. I tried to copy Vatican Radio just before this (9750) and had nearly no signal at all. Propagation is definitely off, and Allan's comment is spot on.

Ludo, please convince CBC to transmit at something other than 20.88 kbps. Audio fidelity may suffer slightly, but the signal will travel farther. We North Americans have a lot of experience with signals that almost make it, but never decode well because of the transmission speed

Unhappy Just about the saddest log I ever posted

Propagation was down the crapper today! CBC was awful, no Vatican or Kuwait.
The early Montinsery RNW test was the only good DRM all day. RNZI right now is even missing!

Ditto on Brendan's post. It seems that a 17.8 or so bitrate in Mono might make for more stable listening. I realize Ludo is into Stereo DRM, which is fine if there is enough signal and SNR.

I'm in a poor spot in the Pacific North West to be copying Sackville anyway. The new French Guyana transmissions really show some promise however. Several days of nearly 100% audio over the whole on-air time!

15 Oct log

Hmmmm, somebody must have shaken CBC's tree. Two days in a row they start TDP's broadcast on time, with all the right info. Still having audio problems: overwhelmingly lopsided on the right channel again. Can somebody pleeeease fix it?

Just a few very short audio dropouts at the beginning. Propagation seems to be less disturbed today, although the sunspot number is lower.

Some more dropouts from 0035 to 0050Z; SNR fluctuating downward then back up.

Overall, much better than yesterday's broadcast. CBC shut down a minute early though!

RCI (TDP) reception near Atlanta, Georgia, USA

This evening's 9790 kHz reception report.

The path between Sackville and Atlanta stayed open 30 mins. longer tonight!

The drop in SNR in the first 15 minutes was my fault - an intermittent fault in the cable between the radio and computer.

As Brendan said, most of the audio was in the right channel. I wonder if anybody at the transmitter site actually monitors the audio output?

Thumbs up 16 October log

Excellent reception today. Only a couple of short dropouts, otherwise good quality signal. The previously mentioned audio problem is still with us however. Too much right channel... Propagation was much better today.

DRM the way it's supposed to be!

Wow! The left channel is still way down in amplitude, but what a signal. The major dropouts were due to me clicking on the second service tab, which showed "GDW" with audio and text, but no audio was present.

ALRIGHT! The audio is fixed! Good well-balanced stereo today. The SDC was showing just the usual Sackville message about transmitting for your listening pleasure to the NE USA, no TDP text. The FAC was all TDP and correct.

Good report all told. Just a few, quick dropouts.

TDP (via Sackville) reception near Atlanta, Georgia, USA

This evening's 9790 kHz reception report. SNR too low for audio at the beginning of the period, then improved, and then finally settled on the border between audio and no audio.

Interestingly the S-meter signal strength was high, between S9+20dB and S9+30dB. Signal delay seems to be the culprit (I have also attached the Dream desk top screen shot taken at about the 57 minute point in the broadcast).

When the audio was on it sounded great, and with good stereo separation.

Thumbs down TDP (via Sackville) reception near Atlanta, Georgia, USA

This evening's 9790 kHz reception report.

No audio was decoded tonight.

The signal strength on the S-meter was only S9 (varying +/- 5dB) throughout the transmission period.

18 October log - partial

DRMLogger is not recording when I want it too. Had to hand start this log, and so only got the last few minutes of the broadcast.

Came through well, no problems heard for those few minutes.

Not very good today. Many dropouts, and the graphed data shows it.

20 October log

A great start, then a lot of dropouts as the log shows. I suspect the low sunspot numbers are at work here. But, the graph starts declining just at the time local sunset occurs, so the shifting layers may also be at work.

Red face Dancing in the kitchen

I ran my CCrane modulator and listened to TDP on FM while I made dinner (via my DE1103). Great sounding when it was in! I plugged a pair of headphones in to hear the stereo. Sounded balanced! Signal kept getting worse until NADA!

Wink 20th October, wrong direction

Hi,

Just for fun I let Windows start up Dream from its sleep just after midnight UTC. It was not much to "see", from the back lobe, but on the other hand I was asleep and cannot confirm what was on the channel at that time of night. Seems to have been some bursts of music. Did anyone notice the Audio Level in the "Sound Spectrum" window? Is it as loud as on 6.015 MHz?

TDP (via Sackville) reception near Atlanta, Georgia, USA

This evening's 9790 kHz reception report.

Much better. Although the graph doesn't look really good, the audio was coming through very well (DRM radio software which I don't usually use) but with obvious audio drop outs. The text message at times was garbled, don't know if that is the fault of the receive software.

In fact when I asked my wife to come over and experience the short wave stereo, she was dancing to the music

As for signal strength, very strong, pinning the S meter at S9+40db plus. Trouble with such power is that the multipath is strong too. At S9+30dB there were drop outs, and at S9+20dB the audio was gone!

Don't you just love DRM?
