Naples and DRM

Hi - Regarding Irma please see what I wrote:
https://swling.com/blog/2017/09/gues...owered-radios/

My reasons for sharing the audio are 1) share with others what recording from the Gospell using the USB port sound like since that sounds a lot different than a video recording the audio via a mike; 2) since parts of Radio Kuwait sound overmodulated to me, particularly the English service, determine if it is at the transmitter or perhaps a problem with my receiver.

I did not shoot a video for Youtube, I just recorded via the USB port and shot a still of the screen.

I think the plots you guys are sharing great, but I have no luck with reception here where my computer is. It is only when I have taken the Gospell to a quiet location a few kilometers from here with no computer that I have been able to hear Radio Kuwait.

I think it is interesting that the map shows that my tiny corner of Florida is the fourth hop. So here is my question for you - They are transmitting in "B" which I believe is a single hop service. Wouldn't they do better in mode "C" multi-hop? Does anyone know of broadcasters using "C"?

73s,

Hans

Hi Hans,

The Radio Kuwait transmissions are currently experimental and therefore some problems are to be anticipated.

The "overmodulation" that you may hear is audio distortion due to level problems when they switch from their music server to the studio feed. The stereo music quality in my opinion is very good.

Can the new Gospell and Titus DRM receivers provide the stereo output to two speakers or, at a minimum, to a pair of headphones?

There are four robustness modes in DRM used in medium and shortwave transmissions.

Mode A is used primarily on ground wave signals with very little or no fading on LF, and MF bands.

Mode B is used on MF and HF for sky wave signals where there is both time (delay) and frequency (doppler) fading.

Mode C is as B but with greater Doppler spread.

Mode D is as B but with severe delay and Doppler spread.

As most HF transmissions, in Europe, are for relatively short regional distances then mode B is normally used.

Currently the frequencies that R. Kuwait is using are poor for both Europe and North America. One should not need to find an RF quiet spot kilometers away from home to enjoy DRM broadcasts!

Hi Zyg,
The Gospell has a Line Output and a Stereo Headphones output on the rear panel.

The Titus has two speakers and there's a headphone jack too.

Hi Terje,

Very good - the need for stereo output is something we haven't normally looked for in shortwave receivers!

Today's Reception in Naples

Hi All - I tuned in at 1850 and listened until 1950. I had audio the entire time with just a few drop outs. I tried to see if I could just get it with the whip antenna, but it would not provide any audio just the screen with the label.

In listening with the headphones, almost all of the audio is on the left side and it was not stereo. The indicator on the radio did say it was stereo.

Gospell GR-216 and Wellbrook loop

73s,

Hans

Hans,

Thank you for sharing your excellent results. Was this at your home or the "quiet" location?

Attached is the VOAAREA propagation model plot for Radio Kuwait on this frequency for this month at 1900 UTC (using a 6ft whip antenna).

I had to cut the plot drastically to fit the 100kb download limit, but you should get the picture.

Definitely the audio is two channel-MONO! Although the label shows PStereo.
