19/07 - 10h00 - 12h00 (GMT) – 7h00 - 9h00 - Brasília - Brazil.

"Live DRM SW transmission aimed at Southern Africa on July 19th on the occasion of the SABA workshop

The Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) Consortium will use its strong presence at this year’s Southern African Broadcasting Association (SABA) Digital Broadcasting Infrastructure and Platforms Event, during Mediatech (Africa’s biggest technology and trade show exhibition for the media and entertainment industry) to demonstrate the possibilities of the DRM standard. During its morning workshop on Friday 19th July DRM experts, representing well-known Consortium members companies and organizations such as Ampegon, Fraunhofer IIS, and Nautel, will make presentations and be available to answer any questions.

To complement the workshop DRM is pleased to announce that it is planning a live broadcast to South Africa which will be transmitted on 21,460 kHz during the Workshop. The two hour transmission will feature BBC programmes in English and will be on air from 1000-1200 GMT, 1200-1400 local time.

Ruxandra Obreja, DRM Chairperson, says: “This is an exciting opportunity for delegates to not just hear about the technology but to listen to the excellent audio quality that DRM can bring to radio lovers in Africa. DRM is the only standard for all bands below and above 30 MHz that could offer so much to listeners across the continent.”

Although receiving the 13 m band might be a bit difficult at 0400 at my location, I might set the DR111 to the frequency and see if anything registers from the rear lobe of the antenna.

If anyone receives this signal from 1000-1100Z today, July 18th, please post here so I know if the BBC is transmitting on this frequency.

Currently, I don't see any trace of this signal which isn't surprising if they're not transmitting until tomorrow ... Let me know, please.

TIA

Thanks... I didn't see any trace of a signal as I checked the display visually periodically during the hour, but at least I know that the BBC was transmitting. If the DR111 saved the log, I'll look at it later. I wonder how much power the BBC is using?

I do not have this information, I'm sorry.

21460 kHz

I saw traces of signal on 21460 kHz at 1005 UTC here in Stockholm... but just traces.

Today I was on time.
Had 70% audio at first in 12K sample rate
Then I believe parameters were chaged as there was no synchronisation
No signal at all at 10H30
Back around 11 H 00 with 50% audio.
Not bad as the band is dead apart from a weak AM signal on 21540
PS propagation in the band improved later but not for 21460

Between 1033Z and 1034Z, my log shows a lone green dot which is probably just a spurious signal. At 1100Z, I switched to logging RA on 12080 kHz. However, I'd be interested to see other logs from the eastern part of the USA to compare signal strength around 1033Z ..

DR111 with external, active antenna

I switched off my PC and the noise in the FRG-7700 decreased a lot. So I tuned the Newstar DR111 to 21460 kHz and - voilà - suddenly I saw a label "BBC WS DRM". I logged the last 19 minutes and got a log with max. 9 dB SNR. At one instant an occasional word was heard, but that was before I started the log.
