Good Reception of WINB in Europe

May I suggest trying some of the SDRs in Europe. I find the best time to be 1400-1600 UTC. I often get 100% copy at this time and I have made audio recordings. I am happy to send some samples upon request, drop me a private message with your email and I will do so.

Hans,

If you're referring to me, I've spent a few years minimizing my presence on the Spynet in early 21st century after using it heavily for decades beginning with CompuServe in the 1980s. For primarily philosophical and privacy reasons, I mainly use OTA communication because the lack of infrastructure is not easily controlled or invaded. For similar reasons, I don't own a Spyphone either.

Reception of WINB's DRM portion of their signal, in Europe, continues to be difficult. The best reception (if you can call it that) by KiwiSDR web receivers is those that utilize good antennas and are at locations close to, or surrounded by the sea.

Adding to the problems is the co-channel interference from AWR at 1530 - 1558z and then from RFI starting just before 1600z as shown in the attached from a KiwiSDR receiver in Greece.

I haven't found any European KiwiSDR, that is located away from a coastal area, that is able to receive a meaningful signal from WINB.

Of course the commercial organization that is receiving the datacasting signal is probably using high gain and very directional antennas that one can imagine can also nicely decode the DRM component.

Marcel,

Merci.

A good example of how poor this broadcast sounds!

Strange, usually WINB is a struggle to receive here with SNR around 8db, but I just tuned in at 1330 UTC and it's coming in at around 17db SNR, the best I've ever heard it. Interestingly though I'm not seeing any 'datacasting' on the other sideband, which could have something to do with it.

Better signal again today, maybe it's just that the post-Equinox propagation on 15 MHz is now better?

I just checked WINB's DRM signal (at 1620 UTC, Thursday 27/9/18) on 15670 kHz and am getting about 25% audio decoding with my MR27024 + 8 m wire. Oddly, though, what audio gets through is accompanied by a continually bleeping/buzzing sound (about twice a second).

Downtown St. John's, Newfoundland.

---------------------
A few minutes later: After 1630, the bleeping sounds are gone. Perhaps it was on the programme tape they were running.

Yeah, I heard that buzzing too since I decided to record the audio today. Normally, I'm no longer listening to AAC+ audio, but today was an exception.
