China National Radio on 15580 kHz

Not so good reception in Japan on this frequency. Here they run 4/16 and a slightly different configuration. Unfortunately DReaM crashed.

CNR is already on this frequency or is this digital broadcast on 15580 kHz a different one? I thought digital broadcasting on this frequency was to start next week?

I was surprised too. They said in an e-mail that they are fine-tuning the gear and are testing before the tests starting on the 23rd.

11.695 kHz was P-Stereo, but not 15580 kHz (but 5000 Hz audio BW).

15580 kHz is on the air just now at 0145 UTC, but Radio Free Asia is in AM on the same channel until 0200 UTC.

CNR 15580 kHz Signal Coverage

Attached is the VOACAP signal coverage for the CNR 15580 kHz DRM transmission at 0100z for October 2018.

The blue -115 dBW contour represents an S7 on the S-meter, and the pink -109 dBW contour represents an S8 (using a 6ft [~1.8 meter] long vertical whip antenna).

This is probably the best time to receive this broadcast in North America as the plot shows propagation towards the center and NW part of the continent.

KiwiSDR Reception of CNR 15580 kHz at Weiser, Idaho, USA

Checking reception by the various KiwiSDR web receivers situated in the northern Pacific Rim area, confirmed the VOACAP area plot submitted earlier.

Attached is a partial the log from the KiwiSDR receiver located in Weiser, Idaho, in the NW USA. Signal levels were initially about S7 and slowly dropping.

There is very strong adjacent channel and co-channel interference which affected the log. Before logging commenced there was a little audio decoding. VOACAP shows that the signal level would continue to drop over the next two hours or so.

24th Oct.

China National Radio logged for 130 minutes from 0200-0410 UTC. This morning the configuration was 17,46 kbps, UEP(22,2%), AAC+, P-Stereo. The first hour is impossible to log because of co-channel AM QRM.
Max.12,55 dB SNR and 2,20% decoded audio.

Nothing but a faint ghost of a DRM signal from 15580 kHz on the watefall display at my home location, but the signal peaked up a bit for a couple of minutes via the NZRDXL KiwiSDR a bit further north in New Zealand.

Cheers, Chris

(Shortly after posting my original message I noted the signal had picked up a bit at home, so I've added a second log from home. No audio though).

Good stuff!

Nice to see that the VOACAP area model corresponds with the listener reports.

The attachment shows signal coverage at 0800z for October 2018 using a simple 6ft high vertical whip antenna. Higher gain antennas will give better results.

That -121 contour goes right over my head

Just had a listen to 15580 kHz from 01:50 UTC via the Northland NZ KiwiSDR. A suprising amount of decoding considering there is a co-channel AM signal there too.

28th Oct.

No point logging this frequency here in Japan, at least not now. A faint signal that barely produced a label. Max. 10,31 dB SNR and 0,14% decoded audio in this short log.
