DW Kigali 25740 kHz

An unattended log, unfortunately. I've never seen this one before.

Note 30th April: DW (many thanks to Mr. J.M.) confirmed the location as Kigali in Rwanda. That is about 5'860 km away from my location

DW RLS Kigali is still fizzing around 1330 UTC today, but the signal is very faint. The distant thunderstorms are noisier

1st May

Noticed some activity this afternoon, started logging and the S-meter rose to a maximum of S3 (+19 dBuV) and there was quite a lot of audio.

Around 1615 UTC the programme was in English. Around 1703 UTC it was native language and the S-meter peaked at S2. Around 1734 UTC still native language and the S-meter peaked at S3. Then around 1800 UTC the conditions died quickly.

Today's catch. Interesting that I can receive something almost every afternoon. Today there was only three syllables of sound when the SNR reached 14 dB.

Today's catch. It is getting better every day! Shame I had the 10 dB RF ATT active the first 30 minutes or so. I cut that first part out from the log. Furthermore I got 174 MB WAV on the HDD. I have some difficulties understanding the language though.

Hi Digger,

this seems to be a one man show here ?
It's great that you can recieve our transmission.
This afternoon i've tuned the transmitter a little bit, so you get some more signal ;-)

73 from Kigali

Hi Bernd!

Looks like nobody at DW in Bonn knows about this transmission.
I asked them several times about this.

When I tried to receive your transmission some days ago there was a
v e r y weak signal.
Could you tell us a bit about the background of this transmission (special event etc.)?

Oder gab es Beschwerden, dass man mit den verteilten (?) Himalayas "Radio Rwanda" nicht empfangen konnte?

Beste Grüße nach Kigali

Greetings

Douglas Kähler

Hi Bernd in Kigali and all,

On 5th May DW in Germany confirmed in a e-mail:
"die Senderleistung betraegt 80 Watt eff. Die Antenne ist eine Viertelwellen-Ground-Plane ca. 10 m ueber Grund.
MfG, DEUTSCHE WELLE"

I put a GoogleEarth bookmark on my DRM home page, if you would want to have a look at the site:

http://www.omnirep.ch/drm/dumps.html

It seems like the transmitter was assembled in Switzerland?

I mentioned in a post # 1 here with thanks to DW who informed me that the transmitter against my wildest expectations really is located in Rwanda.

With some further help from x-fielder, we found out with VOACAP that it was / is theoretically possible to receive a transmission at this QRG in the afternoons over two F2 hops.

We'll see what today brings.

Best regards to Africa

Hi Douglas,
hi Digger,

our DRM station is really located in Rwanda at our relaystation.
The transmission beginns whit the start of the first panafrican DRM Conference last year in Kigali. It should be a demonstration for the members of this conference, where a lot of Himalaya DRM 2009 Recievers were given to then conference members. Now it is running for Orinfor, the national radio.
As Digger posted, we are running about 80 Watts in a Groundplane antenna.

So, all the best from Kigali
