Maybe I saw a trace of the signal sometimes, but no fieldstrength compared to the other amateur signals neither with horizontal nor vertical rx antenna.

S7 on 3780 kHz but the software is not able to decode the signal (bandwidth - 4 kHz, modulation ...). And RTTY transmission as jammer !!

Good job !!

Best regards

Michel

Au revoir, Sottens...

No reception at 1900 UTC, but some audio at the 3780 kHz transmission one hour later. Not too much audio and no slides received again but anyway: A great project which -I guess- was exciting for listeners and TX-guys!

Terrible audio quality.
Probably another codec like CELP or HVXC will perform much better at that low bitrate.
Zipped mp3 audio sample attached...rightclick-download...

Did not get a signal at all on the first transmission, excellent results on 3780 kHz.

7 MHz was no good here 130 km away, but the signal on 3780 at least left some traces like this screen shot of the label. Good job anyway. Congrats!

Big Thank you

Thank you so much everyone for these great reports.

It was a very experimental transmission on an antenna designed normally for 765kHz with an amplifier designed normally for AM/SSB and 2 pre-amplifiers before.
We are very happy and surprised to see the results.

This time we started with 16QAM transmissions and good error coding leaving us a little 4.8kbit/s for the audio.
Effectively, the audio quality was not good at such a bitrate but enough to copy the message normally.
The transmission software we had (spark) didn't have CELP or HVXC, that are the vocoders in DRM and also I'm not sure if receivers (hardware or software) support it.
15 minutes after the starts (20:15 and 21:15), we changed to 64QAM leaving enough bitrate to transmit a slideshow of images but requiring 14-15dB of SNR.
For all tests this time we had a power between 150W and 250 W.

There's still a lot of room for improvements but we can see with this test that it's possible to perform a DRM transmission at limited costs using free or open software and democratized SDR platforms like the USRP1.
A next test would be to reuse the same configuration but on a normal ham radio antenna to compare.

At least Sottens will have had its last word in DRM before dying, if it is destroyed as planned...

How about trying for DX to North America?

Mathias,

It would be interesting if you could try a transmission on a higher frequency and at a time of day so that it could be received in North America. It would probably be a better idea to use an amateur beam antenna for the DX rather than the MW tower at Sottens.

Mathias,

. . . and try to get hold of the Beromünster antenna for your next tests!
At least I'll be able to catch the ground wave then . . .
