Except for the codec and Mode C, VoN's configuration is one of the best on the shortwave bands. Quality of VoN's remote production could be improved though.

Hi Tom,
does Mode C 16-QAM provide a more robust signal than Mode B 16-QAM?

Alex

Alex,

Theoretically, yes. Practically, no in my experience. Over the years, I've frequently witnessed wide variations between theory and practice. Even controlled experiments can NOT necessarily determine the overall experience of a human, in this case by a listener. I wish VoN would switch to Mode B while retaining 16 QAM modulation. Mode B works well for intercontinental digital broadcasts while allowing more capacity than Mode C.

Can someone explain why VoN CONSISTENTLY has problems staying on the air? I'm not necessarily referring to a consistent schedule, either. VoN seems to be off the air more than it is on the air. Naturally, it would be nice if VoN could fix their scheduling problems as well. I wonder if VoN is even broadcasting analog on shortwave currently. Even a revised digital schedule encompassing a couple days a week would be FAR preferable to the current situation, but the transmitter needs to be capable of doing so. I have a difficult time grasping this ongoing situation with VoN.

VoN, listeners require SOME sort of reliability from you. What ails VoN????

VoN is back, I'm currently getting a fair signal from it on 15120 kHz, though the band is on its way down here now that it has gone dark.

Good signal at 16.55 UTC. SNR of 23dB. Perhaps on a new schedule?

Left my receiver listening to 15120 kHz by itself overnight, and see some very faint traces of signal around 1600 UTC, so I'd go with an earlier transmission time too. Though there is a little spike around 2000 UTC too, but that may just be noise. Even at the best of times VoN has never been decodable here in NZ.

Cheers, Chris

Noted today in Arabic at 16.05-16.15, then in African language (Hausa?). Yesterday there was a transmission in an African language from 16.15 to 16.30 between two segments in English.

I'm pleased with VoN's new schedule. Except for the codec, VoN's configuration and time are far better than most digital broadcasters. Keep it on a regular schedule, VoN!

I probably won't post the log since the signal is virtually non-existent, but I did notice a digital broadcast of at least 3 hours.

On VoN's historical unreliability, some of it is likely due to their location in the tropics which is detrimental to electrical equipment. Personally, if I were manager of this station at Abuja, the transmitters would be located below ground.

A result for 128 mins. 83.87% CDA / 24.4dB max SNR. Weak signal + fading caused almost continuous dropouts. After ~16:09 the results turned much better.
