Russian DRM 12025 kHz Reception in Kanuma City, Japan

A short log of the new Russian DRM station reception via the KiwiSDR web receiver in Kanuma City, Japan today.

The signal strength varied from about S5 to S8, with audio decoding occurring at just over S6.

Audio was a selection of music, in mono, good quality with an audio bandwidth of 6 kHz.

The signal disappeared at about 0205z.

The received station ID is shown in Attachment 2.

Log from 31st August

The signal was (and is now, today 1st Sep. at 0916 UTC) very strong in Jakarta. However, at my location in Japan I can't see any traces of the signal. The content was continous music.

Note: My log was taken with a Kiwi SDR, not from Shizuoka City.

Russian DRM 12025 kHz VOAAREA Plot

According to the DRMNA Yahoo Group, this 12025 kHz DRM transmitter is located in Russia at the Komsomolsk Amur Site.

If the published HFCC reports are correct then the transmitter beam passes over my receive location near Atlanta. The attached VOAAREA plot for 2200z for September shows, assuming normal propagation conditions, that there is a possibility of good signal strength there at 2200z!

As the beam also passes close to the auroral zone the audio may not be decoded due to the possible very high Doppler effects (even if the received signal is strong).

Russian DRM 12025 kHz Reception in Kanuma City, Japan

The transmission started at about 2340z this evening (2-September).

This log again from the Kanuma City, Japan, KiwiSDR. The receiver timed-out after an hour of use.

The receive location is at the back end of the beam.

Audio consisted of various types of instrumental music and was of a pleasant quality.

Signal level was about S7 going up to an S8 at times. Audio drop-outs primarily due to signal fading (below S7).

3rd Sep. 2019

I spent some time looking at different Kiwi SDR around the world and the only place with a visible signal was Japan. The strongest signal was at Matsukawa in the Fukushima region in the east of Honshu. The further west, the weaker the signal. At my place I am not getting anything at all.

Enclosed is a short log until the signal suddenly disappeared at noon Japanese time. Before that there was a short break with only a carrier to be seen. The audio BW was 6000 Hz and the sound was good. Non-stop popular music was played.

Last nights' short log

A bit short last night, as the waterfall seemed to disappear about 0100Z.
Found the exact location for this site - it's 50.647057N, 136.932272E.

VOR 12025 KHz VOAAREA Plots for Japan

Hi Terje,

You may be interested in these VOAAREA plots of VOR 12025 kHz for Japan (map centered on Tokyo) valid for this month.

Conditions for each hour are different; for example, attachment 1 shows the 0300z plot and attachment 2 the 0009z.

It would be interesting to know what are the actual received signal strengths.

Russian DRM 12025 kHz Reception in Daegu City, South Korea

VOACAP showed that South Korea should have good reception (from the rear of the beam) at 0000z.

Here is a one hour log from the KiwiSDR in Daegu City, South Korea.

The received signal showed a strength of S9+20dB. Max SNR peaked at 25.05 dB.

Hi Zyg, Terje,
I think Zyg is right: 25kW sounds right for the quality of the signal I've seen here. Solar conditions over this path haven't been optimal, and I'm hoping for some improvement. Last night I saw only the briefest of signals on the waterfall, but it lasted only about 10 mins before fading out around 0250.

9th Sep. 2019

Playing with 25 dB SNR and S9 +3 dB at JP7FSO,Mastukawa,Fukushima JAPAN just now at 0200 UTC.

A clean signal with good Channel Impulse Response.

Btw, "Mastukawa" should be Matsukawa, but I copied it from the SDR page and pasted it here . . . :-)

Data on 12025 kHz

Noticed (Sept 9, ~2000z) via Japanese web KiwiSDR that the Russian 12025 kHz transmission is carrier plus data on the lower sideband (see attachment).

Looks similar to the WINB combo signal, but with carrier and without DRM on the other sideband.

Tonight's log

Haven't seen much of a waterfall the last few days. There was an opening, but it wasn't very good or very long.

Haven't seen that data carrier here, but given my results of late, not surprised.
