This is encouraging news. I think much of Latin America will follow what Brazil does too. I sent this on to one of our regulators and he agreed that Brazil's movement on this will motivate the rest of Latin America to make a decision just as Brazil's decision on Digital TV did.

Yeah I believe it is Caracol that has been doing the tests. In think I think they have been doing them for quite a while so far. It is interesting that I have never heard anything about DRM coming out of Colombia either. I am not sure if that is b because they don't know about DRM or not. I suspect that it is radio industry that is pushing HD, and not the regulators. We will have to watch and see what happens in Colombia...

Today I LOG DTF did not know they were transmitting on 17,875 kHz today as
well.

Anyway, it was the best decoding, which had in recent days, reaching the

Hoje fiz LOG da TDF mas não sabia que estavam transmitindo em 17.875 khz
hoje também.

De qualquer forma, foi a melhor decodificação que teve nos últimos dias,
chegando o Decoded audio a 99,64% (17:08-21:45h).

Trials have begun with DRM and DRM + in Brazil.

Brasília, 3 de fevereiro – A partir desta quarta-feira, 3 de fevereiro, o Ministério das Comunicações realiza em Belo Horizonte (MG) mais uma rodada de testes de rádio digital, com o início de transmissões experimentais do padrão de tecnologia européia DRM (Digital Radio Mondiale). Os dados serão coletados e comparados com outros testes realizados no país com o padrão norte-americano Iboc (In-Band-On-Chanel). O relatório comparativo com as transmissões deverá ser entregue ao ministro das Comunicações, Hélio Costa, até o final de fevereiro.

Os resultados com os testes em transmissões digitais usando a tecnologia Iboc já foram concluídos na cidade de São Paulo. Para subsidiar uma definição do padrão de rádio digital pelo governo federal, ainda falta concluir os testes com o sistema DRM, inicialmente realizados também na capital paulista. De acordo com o ministro Hélio Costa, a decisão final do governo será tomada ouvindo os radiodifusores. “Precisamos estar atentos às novas tecnologias digitais. O Brasil precisa se preparar para a nova onda do rádio: a digitalização”, diz Hélio Costa.

Segundo técnicos do Ministério das Comunicações, com a implantação do rádio digital no Brasil as transmissões ganharão em qualidade de som e transformarão radicalmente a experiência dos ouvintes. Regiões como a Amazônia, que hoje é servida pela Rádio Nacional da Amazônia, da Empresa Brasil de Comunicação (EBC), poderão receber transmissões praticamente limpas, sem interferências, com qualidade técnica e sinal puro, mesmo sendo feitas longe da própria região.

Na avaliação de especialistas do ministério, o padrão europeu de rádio digital ganhou robustez técnica e pode vir a suprir algumas das necessidades do país, principalmente pela qualidade das transmissões em ondas curtas. Mais recentemente, o padrão DRM passou a operar também em FM, ondas tropicais e ondas médias, o que representaria uma cobertura ampla em todos os espectros de rádio. Fazem parte do consórcio que desenvolveu o padrão de rádio digital emissoras influentes, como Deutsche Welle (Alemanha), NHK (Japão), Netherlands (Holanda) e BBC (Reino Unido), bem como outras como a Rádio Vaticano e a Voz da Nigéria.

Nos primeiros testes feitos com o padrão DRM, foi possível aos técnicos fazer experiências na tentativa de levar outros serviços aos ouvintes, além da simples transmissão de áudio. Técnicos envolvidos no estudo do sistema de rádio digital destacaram que será possível ao ouvinte o acesso em seu aparelho receptor à transmissão de fotos, dados e gravações. Isso porque o sistema funciona em sistema de multiprogramação. Será possível ao ouvinte, por exemplo, dispor de uma impressora para reproduzir textos e outros tipos de dados gerados pela emissora de rádio. “Alguns dos aparelhos em produção na Europa funcionam como uma central multimídia”, diz o ministro Hélio Costa.

O ministro destacou o fato de o padrão de rádio DRM vir sendo desenvolvido em sistema aberto e livre, criado e desenvolvido por um consórcio formado por empresas e emissoras interessadas na digitalização do rádio. Já o padrão americano Iboc é um sistema fechado e proprietário, o que traz inconvenientes aos radiodifusores, que teriam desembolsar royalties aos fabricantes pelo uso e exploração do sistema.

Os testes de transmissão digital em rádio com a tecnologia DRM serão comandados por técnicos do Ministério das Comunicações em parceria com funcionários da Agência Nacional de Telecomunicações (Anatel), do Instituto Nacional de Metrologia, Normalização e Qualidade Industrial (Inmetro), das universidades federais de Minas Gerais (UFMG), do Pará (UFPA) e do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN). Thank you very much for this important information.

One interesting point is that the quality of the signal is never mentioned.

Some other comments are child play:
1- DRM is not a commercial company so we have nothing to sell, Ibiquity is a private commercial company with equity, they need revenues to live and the only way to make them is from sales of their products; nothing is paid to DRM but the patent DRM is using. No DRM fee on top of the patents. Ibiquity does add a fee on top of the patents they use for the reason explain above. This a reality that cannot be discussed. The best proof is that Via licensing is gather the patent owners in DRM, so it is different from DRM, DRM has no access to internal informations, we can influence the pricing, etc. So this is clearly not DRM it is via licensing a subsidary of Dolby (I can tell you I was one a few years ago interested in participating to on of their meeting as TDF (a patent owner) and I was sack away so far I was not the one in charge of patent in TDF)

2- If Ibiquity does not ask for any payment then it means that Ibiquity is subsidizing its product which is forbidden in a "free market" as written by the author of this email.

3- HD is a proprietary system, this is also a reality, this is not a standard as stated by laws. It is a US system, it is not recognized by the ITU nor the ETSI. It is US system accept in the US, It has been validated by US administration for US owners for the US market. It has not been validated by any international body. It is a fact. I shall ask my engineers to go to the web site that is mentioned

4- HD Receivers are available although I have not seen any in Brazil. The one I could see was bought or offered by ibiquity. Again the points are the quality (robustness, flexibility of the signal) and how the technology can improve the conditions of broadcasting in Brazil (SFN, spectrum management, future evolution to DRTV, savings, the new business model associated with DRM, etc). No comment on these points at all. To make a perfect 40 USD receiver in the store from scratch it take less than 1 year and 3 M USD. At the size of the Brazilian market it is not strategic to have a receiver available. In our world or fast development of component, it might be a weakness, the latest on board being the best as usual. Better have an excellent standard. So if delay has to be considered as suggested, the delay to have a 40 USD DRM (AM and FM) receiver will be less than the tile to install the networks. And this is what counts.

5- Of course we can publish all information that we have. We shall not do because we are contributors to the MC process. But I prefer face to face explanations. I am of course at the disposal of anyone or any group that would like to know more about the benefits of DRM for the broadcasters ( I now feel that many are not aware of the benefits of DRM) and also for the listeners. I could see no comment mentioning them ! They are ultimately those concerned.

6- DRM+ is no longer in development we shall have international standards (ETSI and IEC / ITU) by April at the latest. It is an extension of the existing DRM standard.

Tests with DRM (MW and SW) and DRM + (VHF-FM) in Brazil are extraordinary

"Extraordinary" I who am saying, but according to information obtained by telephone Flávio Ferreira Lima from the Ministry of Communications and coordinator of the engineering team to manage the tests with both DRM systems in Brazil, both the DRM in the range OM as DRM + the FM band are showing amazing results, above our expectations.

The fact is that the situation of digital radio trials in Brazil has a 180 degrees this year. I think these tests in Brazil are currently the most complete tests with existing DRM system in the world.

OM in the range have been tested, and OM IBOC Simulcast with Radio Cultura AM 1200 kHz and 1210 kHz in DRM in Sao Paulo - Fundação Padre Anchieta. NOTE: In the same radio as there were tests HDRadio.
On January 14, 2010 I was personally in Sao Paulo and I had the honor of being together and with the team of engineers in the acceptance tests in the Greater Sao Paulo.
I live over 800 km from Sao Paulo but I have had the opportunity to decode the audio signal of Culture in both DRM 1210 kHz in Simulcast but also in .1.200 kHz digital only.

In the VHF range, tests are being made in the region of Belo Horizonte on 104.5 MHz FM with 1500 watts and 104.4 MHz with DRM + 70Watts. Flávio said that even with this low power level digital signal, the signal is excellent within a radius of 40 km which is much higher than was estimated a radius of only 16 Km
I found this amazing result, fantastic.

By testing the DRM is doing away with some myths that exist here and proved that:
1) works in Simulcast and IBOC;
2) that has full system for Medium Wave, Short Wave and also for VHF (FM);
3) they are doing tests for at least 2 months in Brazil;
4) that the DRM and DRM + is an excellent strength and that meet the needs of coverage of television partners;
5) that has a group of experts able to develop specific solutions for Brazil;

Testes com DRM (OM e OC) e DRM+ (VHF-FM) no Brasil são extraordinários

“Extraordinários” sou eu quem estou dizendo mas, segundo informações obtidas por telefone com Flávio Ferreira Lima do Ministério das Comunicações e coordenador da equipe de engenheiros que gerenciam os testes com ambos os sistemas DRM no Brasil, tanto o DRM na faixa OM como o DRM+ na faixa FM estão apresentando resultados surpreendentes, acima das espectativas.

O fato é que a situação dos testes de rádio digital no Brasil deu uma guinada de 180 graus este ano. Desde o início de 2010 o DRM está fazendo testes em Ondas Curtas, Ondas Médias e também em VHF (FM) como nunca havia tido em nosso país. Os testes continuarão durante o mês de março. Acho que estes testes no Brasil atualmente sejam os mais completos testes existente com sistema DRM no mundo.

Na faixa OM já foram feitos testes em OM IBOC e Simulcast com a Rádio Cultura AM 1.200 Khz e DRM em 1.210 Khz em São Paulo - Fundação Padre Anchieta. OBS: Nesta mesma rádio já houveram testes com HDRadio.
No dia 14 de janeiro de 2010 eu estive pessoalmente em São Paulo e tive a honra de estar junto e acompanhar a equipe de engenheiros nos testes de recepção na região da grande São Paulo.
Eu moro a mais de 800 Km de São Paulo mas já tive a oportunidade de decodificar o sinal de áudio da Cultura DRM tanto em 1.210 Khz em Simulcast como também em .1.200 Khz somente digital.

Na faixa VHF os testes estão sendo feitos na região de Belo Horizonte em 104,5 Mhz FM com 1.500 Watts e 104,4 Mhz DRM+ com 70Watts. Flávio informou que, mesmo com esta baixa potência no nível de sinal digital, o sinal é excelente num raio de 40 Km que é muito superior a estimativa de era um raio de apenas 16 Km.
Eu achei este resultado impressionante, fantástico.

Com estes testes o DRM está acabando com alguns mitos que existiam por aqui e provou que:
1)funciona em Simulcast e IBOC;
2)que tem sistema para a faixa de Ondas Médias, Ondas Curtas e também para VHF (FM);
3)que está fazendo testes por pelo menos 2 meses no Brasil;
4)que o DRM e DRM+ tem uma robustez excelente e que atendem as necessidades de cobertura das emissoras brasileiras;
5)que tem um grupo de técnicos capazes de desenvolver soluções específicas para o Brasil;


Os testes continuarão em março com DRM Simulcast e IBOC em Ondas Médias na Rádio CBN 780 Khz e DRM+ na Rádio Cultura FM 103,3 Mhz ambas em São Paulo.

Parabéns para todas as pessoas que estão envolvidas nos testes com o DRM e para a escolha do melhor padrão para o rádio digital no Brasil.

Muito obrigado pelo seu post, e tambem pelo seu empenho na divulgação do DRM no Brasil. Sempre acreditei que a América do Sul, e em especial o Brasil, seriam muito bem servidos com DRM, pois este modo de transmissão, é uma excelente solução para a cobertura de amplas regiões como o Brasil. Disso mesmo fiz eco faz talvez uns dois anos, junto do consorcio, ao mandar vários e-mails para eles, a interrogar porque não olhavam para o Brasil como um alvo potencial do DRM. Felizmente deu tudo certo, e hoje está em campo como voce diz e muito bem, um dos maiores testes de DRM. Falei até na Altura, que com 4 transmissores em SFN, de uns 10 ou 20 Kw, trabalhando em onda curta (situados em alguns lugares como Belem, João Pessoa ou Recife, em alguma cidade em Rondônia, e em santa Catarina), cruzando a direcção das transmissões, era possivel um excelente cobertura do Brasil em DRM. Espero que esse seja o futuro próximo, pois acredito que esse seria mais um passo de gigante na implementação do DRM a nivel mundial

É certo, o consórcio de DRM é uma organização não comercial, mas seus membros incluem as companhias comerciais que ganham dinheiro vendendo a tecnologia de DRM. Estes fabricantes de produtos de DRM pagam direitos aos detentores dos patentes de DRM que incluem AT& T, Dolby, telecomunicações de France, Fraunhofer, NEC, Panasonic, Sony e Thomson. Estes custos são passados em torno aos compradores de seus produtos. Mesmo que o DRM, a iBiquity não recebe nenhum pagamento dos radiodifusores, mas tem sim um custo para os fabricantes que usam a tecnologia. Em “um mercado livre”, estes custos são passados eventualmente aos compradores finais, e assim formam parte dos preços de venda dos produtos. Os excitadores de DRM têm preços até US$ 75.000. São apenas computadores operados com software, então obviamente há um custo dentro a este preço para usar sua tecnologia. (Em comparação, um excitador de HD Radio equivalente vende em $30.000).

O Sr. Penneroux já sabe que as tecnologias de HD Radio estiveram aceitos há vários anos pela UTI para as faixas OM e FM. O sistema de HD Radio para OM é incluído na recomendação ITU-R BS.1514-1, adotada em outubro de 2002 onde é classificado como de “o sistema IBOC DSB.” O sistema de HD Radio para FM é parte da recomendação ITU-R BS.1514-1, adotada em outubro de 2002 classificado como de “o sistema digital C.” (Se deve mencionar que a tecnologia de DRM+ FM ainda não esta aprovada pela UIT.)

Não tem receptores de HD Radio agora no Brasil porque as lojas comerciais não tem nenhum interesse em comprar produtos para as tecnologias experimentais que não tem sido aprovado. Não obstante, milhões do receptores de HD Radio já foram vendidos nos E.U., e estes produtos igualmente estão prontos para chegar ao Brasil uma vez que a tecnologia recebe a aprovação do governo. Diversos fabricantes do receptores têm indicado já ao Ministério sua apoio para a tecnologia de HD Radio em Brasil, e sua intenção para fabricar receptores em Brasil uma vez que o padrão seja aprovado. A iBiquity esta pronto para trabalhar em conjunto com os fabricantes brasileiros para desenvolver receptores que atendam ás necessidades únicas do pais.
