Voice of Nigeria 15120 kHz from Abuja
1 Attachment(s)
A test transmission from Voice Of Nigeria. Low bitrate but fairly good sound when they played music but terrible when they started talking. Riyadh killed the fun just before 12 UTC.

More test transmission Log 2h 14min. But very problem for strong AM .

Vet good TX SNR up to 32.5dB ...

drmdab 07-03-2012 15:17

I clicked the checkbox to log the reception, however, DREAM did not write anything usefull for the plotter into the files.
At least it recorded this: SNR min: 3.1, max: 19.7 (I guess the max. was at about 1440 UTC when I stopped the log)

Log this morning 51min. Very strong signal ,but very bad audio !!!! BW3kHz:confused:

My log resembles Sixten's very much in regard to the Doppler values. A few drop-outs might have been due to the use of electric machinery in the house. The transmission ended suddenly at 0920 UTC.

I think that the audio was pretty good despite the low bitrate. The levels were perfect and the vocals sounded rather good even though the audio bandwidth was limited to 3000 Hz.

(Thanks Simone for fixing the headline)

An unattended log from this afternoon. Severe co-channel QRM from a 500 kW AM TX in Saudi-Arabia. By the way, Voice Of Nigeria is not scheduled for this time of the day on 15120 kHz.

Nearly perfect reception this morning. Nice text message: "Test with THOMSON transmitter TSW2300D. 125 kW, fixed curtain antenna to North. Greeting from Abuja, Nigeria."

Is this only a temporary test, or will they continue until I arrive back in Switzerland around the 25th March?

@Simone: Thanks, dunno what happened there... Five views down the drain - hihi :o OK, the whole window must be on the desktop... I see...

Not as good over here.
@ Digger: Can you please check your attachment. As far as I know it is only a test transmission for now.

Log 3h 19min. Propagation better today on 15Mhz . Signal stringth was S9+20dB in start. And down to S9 in stop time. 1130.UTC

Her is report this morning Bodo.
And picture of 15Mhz band this morning.

Almost perfect reception except towards the end in this mostly unattended log. I heard the start and listened for an hour or so, then I had to leave. The Doppler was fairly high at times, the SNR dipped suddenly around 0835 UTC but around 0912 it rose again suddenly. Perhaps this was caused by splatter from an adjacent channel. SNR peaked at 24 dB on my Roadstar, which never produces much higher values.

drmdab 12-03-2012 15:39

Just found this on German A-DX mailinglist:

> Bodo, 5N7Q, is in Abuja since last Wednesday, testing everyday on 15120
> and 11770 kHz DRM.
> Official inauguration ceremony on 13 March from 0800 till 1200 UTC with
> special broadcast on 15120 kHz DRM (including Nigerian President speaking
> live around 0930 UTC).

Hi Bodo.

Perfect reception from start , 0800 to 1130 , now start strong AM on freq.
Fantastic strong and stabil signal from Nigeria .:) :) :)

SNR MAX 32.37db
And i can see this audio is from studio , and gives bad quality, thats what i transmit on DRM.

I saw DRM just after 07 UTC, but just for a minute and enough to shoot the Label. At 0725 UTC the signal came back, but there was strong co-channel interference, which could be seen in SNR Spectrum in Dream. At 0758 UTC the Co-channel QRM ended and the decoding was perfect. I noted at 0943 UTC that the channel was still clear since 0758 UTC. Around 1000 UTC the signal had gotten weaker but a fair signal, clear channel, perfect decoding of 9.1 kbps. Then there was a TX break just before 09 UTC, and I stopped my log by mistake. Unfortunately Dream crashed as well, adding to my problems. So my log for today is a bit of a patchwork. The second screen-shot is the best part from 0758 to 1005 UTC with 99.86% CDA. Very good. I also recorded a few hours of audio if anyone is interested.

Very strong and stabile RF signal this evning also nu problem with audio level from time to time.

Audio Level swing from -65dB to -20dB .

Digger 20-03-2012 20:16

No audio from time to time, and there seems to be a problem with the audio input levels from the studio. Extremely high Doppler values, but it seems like the Mode C and the low Bit Rate provides robust audio and good reproduction. However, the audio quality suffers from this to a great extent.

VoN was obviously testing a lot.
Before start of my log they were running 20 kHz mode, but nothing decodable here.
The doppler values were very high.
The audio was very bad at 9 kbps, worse than AM!
Unfortunately DReaM crashed at last and my recorded wav file turned out to be corrupt.
Here is the schedule: http://www.voiceofnigeria.org/freq.htm

I did not notice any other mode than the C/10 kHz, but we had guests here and I was not glued to the PC all the time. I just noticed that the DRM started, so I started logging. There was no audio at all until I switched off. At that time MSC was red and SDC was red. The upper part of the SNR Spectrum was missing. My log did not record any mode changes. The Doppler was high and around 1850 UTC it went over the top of the log plot window.

100% decoded horrible audio. Sometimes there was no audio at all, but most of the time there was. Doppler left the screen around 1930, but it became lower again around 1954 UTC. Interestingly enough, the audio was robust enough to withstand the very high Doppler.

Reception at Paris. Signal very good but bad modulation with frequent interruption.

Hello ALL

Reception in Northeast France is Good SNR : 21 to 21,5 DB modulation is good, many stop from audio is curious.

A 62 minutes log until QRT. High Doppler values, almost perfect CDA, but many problems with interruptions in the audio. And why not test a different DRM mode?

PS, I got an answer to my e-mail:
"Thanks for your mail. We are constantly relying on reports like yours to improve our transmission. Kindly keep sending your observations. Thanks.

A mostly unattended log. I had set it to shut down at 2000 UTC. An almost perfect result, but still audio problems. The Doppler is extremely high. I'm surprised that there is audio at all under these conditions.

stable reception here in Dresden during the complete transmission. Just some problems with a neighbour AM station.
I use just a small indoor antenna close to the window. Due to the 16QAM i had not so many audio drops.

This DRM signal is for me big mystery. Doppler go up over 3Hz and give no problem for audio. Signal stringth this evning was S9+10dB=44dbuV , from start to end of transmission and no fading very stable, SNR 29dB in start and go down to 20dB after 20min . to stop.

So pleas switch over to MODE B and 16.92kbps . MONO. for test.

Sixten 30-03-2012 20:13

No diff. to evning same signal stringth S9+10dB=44dbuV, MAX SNR in start 29.14dB. and doopler up over 3Hz ?????

DH5YM 31-03-2012 07:56

High doppler seems to be the same situation for RNZI if you look to the plots.
Probably we are measuring the speed of the Jetstream the signal has to pass !?

brouillage 13-04-2012 19:31

Good Reception results tonight (decoded audio without interruptions) on an unmodified Morphy Richards sitting on a windowsill with a PC running next to it.

High SNR, terrible audio quality partly because of the 9 kbps and that from Africa's most modern studios according to themselves. At least it withstood my 15 MHz BUZZZZ QRM that is present from time to time. Without this S7 noise blanket the result would perhaps have been even better. C'mon people, change the configuration!

Digger 17-04-2012 07:29

1 Attachment(s)
High Doppler values but perfect decoding in this 90 minutes log. I don't understand why VON won't change the Mode to B and perhaps increase the Bitrate somewhat.
After all, VON claims that they have the most modern and up-to-date digital facilities in all of Africa. We could expect better audio quality under those conditions.

PS: This log is of course from Switzerland, not Stockholm!
