Perfect DRM reception, mostly garbled audio - only one female announcer sounds relatively good. The Doppler constantly rises and at the end of the log it reached its maximum. It's a pity that nobody is able to switch to a slightly better DRM configuration.

Perfect decoding, 100% CDA for 85 minutes. Even the Doppler behaved this evening.

Perfect reception. Seems like the propagation has improved, as the Doppler was below 1 Hz all the time. The audio is sometimes acceptable (well, almost acceptable), sometimes distorted and garbled.

This transmission is nothing but a big joke.
The government spent a lot of money for the latest equipment,
and the engineers missed their lesson about how to configure a DRM modulator.

At least it is a robust mode!!! No errors whatsoever. But the guy down there who answered my e-mails in the beginning doesn't do that any longer...

Anyway, despite the badmouth from PC Media in Taiwan, here is an example of good reception. If you're not in the target area, what do you expect?

This log was taken with the DR111 sitting on a table in the living-room.

Amazing... the Doppler went haywire tonight once more, but the decoding was perfect. Max Doppler reached a maximum of 3.35 Hz at 1956 UTC.

(Sorry, last night the W7 compatibility settings for the Plotter were wrong).

Digger 08-08-2012 19:55

No transmission this evening? (Checked with two receivers, nada)

Back on air tonight, unfortunately with the same miserable configuration. But the decoding was perfect: 100% CDA. Only the Doppler looks peculiar, but it does not impair the decoding at all.

Same configuration, same Doppler pattern but 100% decoded audio.

Same configuration, roughly the same Doppler pattern but 100% decoded audio.

Same muffled audio as usual, bit 100% CDA.

Digger 17-08-2012 22:23

Just about 84% CDA this evening. Looks like the propagation was out. The Doppler was 5.7 Hz around 1947 UTC, and that was that. Finito.

Linux-DRM 18-08-2012 08:14

One of the best received stations here, but I can't listen to VON as the audio is so awful.

Please, Voice of Nigeria sort out the bandwidth & audio, as it totally defeats the purpose of DRM!

Almost perfect reception. I wrote to VoN again and asked them to switch to a different DRM Mode. I have no high expectations though...

Digger 19-08-2012 20:15

1 Attachment(s)
The last 20 minutes resulted in 60% CDA. Before that the reception was perfect.

FritzWue 20-08-2012 19:12

Tuned in tonight and switched off.
The audio quality is much worse than with a standard AM signal.
My suspicion:
The big massas got an expensive training on how to configure a DRM modulator,
and now the untrained engineers at the station are standing in the rain.

I asked a guy down there who has answered my mails before to do something about this horrible configuration, but no reply any more...

Despite nearby heavy thunderstorms the DR111 never dropped out. The signal deteriorated towards the end when the Doppler went sky high . . .

I think this guy did not read my e-mail....

Looks like the transmission stopped early tonight.
The audio quality was so bad that you could almost not understand anything of what was said.

Stopped early this evening too. Good reception, terrible audio.

A most peculiar log tonight. I'm not sure if those audio drop-outs were caused by lightning in the vicinity, but never mind the drop-outs, I listened for 50 minutes without understanding one single word. Overdriven, distorted, 9 kbps - near . . . near what . . . "quality" would be an insult to the audio.

Digger 26-08-2012 20:12

Sorry, Voice of Nigeria, this is the last log from my side until someone sets a new configuration in that DRM encoder. If I cannot be able to sort out the contents of your transmission because the sad state of your coding, then - good-bye. It is no use to have this distorted whatever-it-is blaring out of the loudspeaker. I want to LISTEN, but this is rubbish. Not even worth disk space on my side and a waste of electricity on your side.

The only plus point: Reception of whatever it was was perfect....

Mitsuru Ito 27-08-2012 19:18

hai all
I am getting VON test in Japan.
SNR was 6-10dB with few audio.
but SNR is 3db now and no station name .

Hi Mitsuru-san,

Nice to have met you last time when I was in Japan. This transmitter produces a solid signal, but the audio is a catastrophe.

Yesterday I said that was my last log, but here is another last log...

Another last log - hi - from last night. The first 40 minutes were perfect, but then the Doppler increased and nothing was heard for about 25 minutes.

Only 25 minutes of good reception in the beginning and after that almost no decoding.

Wow, they have changed the Mode from C to B (I didn't notice that yesterday!) and increased the bitrate slightly. That means I have to LISTEN to the transmission tomorrow! :p

Had to go to the airport to pick up my XYL, so this is an unattended log. A little bit weak around 1940 so the result was not that fantastic.

SF:142, A:12 and K:4 did probably not help much either...

Digger 04-09-2012 21:10

Back to dreadful audio, but there was a mode change around 1916 UTC. I had turned the volume down, so I cannot judge whether there was an improvement with the mode B or not.

ianf 05-09-2012 11:06

Agreed, good signal, but audio so bad cannot really listen.

The DX conditions are poor for the time being, and that affected this log. Only 61% CDA and the Doppler rose constantly all the way up until the end of the log.

Almost perfect reception this evening. But still we have to cope with this terrible sound "quality".

FritzWue 09-09-2012 19:25

The sound quality is still bad at 13 kbps tonight.
So I tried their 64 kbps, 48 kHz, stereo 1-pass CBR web stream.
Guess what? The stream is running but no audio! :D

Voice of Nigeria 15120 kHz reception near Atlanta, Georgia, USA
2 Attachment(s)
A short log of this afternoon's reception - 56.93% audio decoded, max SNR 15.54 dB.

The audio, as others have commented, was poor.

There was interference from super strong analog REE on 15110 kHz.

All times are GMT. The time now is 09:15.
