Thankfully, transmissions from Cariari have been suspended so REE's broadcast to SA during the winter on 15115 kHz has been removed along with the interference to VON's broadcast. Now, I might have a decent chance of decoding VON as the spectrum looks pretty clean in NA. Currently, I'm receiving a fairly clean signal from VON.

Due to the absence of interference of Cariari's former broadcast to SA on 15115 kHz, I now stand a chance of decoding VON's broadcast ...

Although not good, this log is my personal best thus far. I expect much better in the future.

Due to minimal strength of the signal, I normally remove power to my PC when receiving VON, but I was distracted by other events.

Incredibly, I left my mesh node powered which absolutely killed the signal ... I removed power to the mesh node at ~ 1951Z. ;) Without the mesh node running, the SNR would have hit 13 dB at 1925Z.

Although most of the decoded audio was madly broken due to borderline signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), I was pleased to actually hear some significant content for the first time from VON. Tentatively, most of the variation in loudness appears due to production, not propagation, but I need to hear more to accurately judge. Also, on my Newstar DR111, a listener needs a SNR of 10 dB for unbroken, clean reception from VON. With a SNR of 9 dB, a listener will hear broken audio. So for the majority of Americans, you basically have two choices for DRM reception in the USA currently, RNZI and VON. This situation will likely improve significantly by next year.

A tip: If a listener owns Newstar's DR111, record the program and replay the program back on a version of DReaM 2.1+ with the option, --permissive 1. The listener will find the playback is more clearly understood (more fully decoded?) on DReaM than the DR111.

I only recorded the last 20 minutes of the broadcast. Although the carrier was fairly strong, it wasn't modulated so the listener only heard silence.

Due to my absence, I needed to power my DR111 from AC today. Unfortunately, when I attempted to save the file, the DR111 dumped portions of the log AND the recording so I was left with this partial log. <sigh> I seriously need to find a replacement power supply.

As I mentioned in a previous log, a listener using Newstar's DR111 needs a minimal SNR of 10 dB to decode audio from VON which is clearly shown in this log at 1943Z.

I'm unsure whether this log is a consequence of a X-flare about 12 hours earlier as the signal is normally so weak at my location anyway.

I received a SNR of ~ 2 dB only at the tail end of the broadcast so the problem is probably due to auroral effects at our northern locations.

Weak signal tonight, but good results. After 19H35 a nearby storm started with a lot of lightning which affected the decoding.

The comment regarding "no signal at all" was based on reception with the DR111. In the FRG-7700 I could hear a signal, and with Dream I got the enclosed log. But the propagation gave up on me around 1900 (the backup battery is flat, so the time might be a little bit inaccurate and it was't the Dual Core Pentium either...). So the first 19 minutes were perfect with 99.97% CDA.

tpreitzel 11-11-2013 19:34

With a quite sensitive receiver and good antenna, I'd expect reception of VON in northern Europe to be quite strong under normal atmospheric conditions since the azimuth is toward Sweden, definitely greater than DReaM receiving a SNR of 15 dB. Stockholm is about 3500 miles from Abuja. Given the apparently poor atmospheric conditions, a SNR of 15 dB was quite good.

For example,

Off topic: VoN and DR111

The peculiar thing last night and the night before was that the DR111 in "expert mode" did not show anything but zero dB SNR in the display... but the FRG-7700 with Dream was 100% OK. I'll check again tonight. I need to find out the reason why the DR111 would not react to the VoN signal.

Not good at all this evening. Again there was no reaction at all from the DR111 and the signal quality was really bad, so I did not even bother logging with Dream and FRG-7700.

By the way, I couldn't find VoN on 15120 kHz in the B13all00.TXT. If they are running 100 kW DRM and if they use something like a 4/2/0.5 antenna at 360 AZ, then we would be getting a very strong RF signal here in Scandinavia. But tonight the propagation was dreadful.
