WINB @ 13690 kHz

I'll be posting the log in a bit.

RANT
I need to rant a bit about interference from Cuba which has been ongoing for DECADES. If Cuba wants to remain outside the international order, so be it, but Cuba needs to play by SOME of the rules governing shortwave broadcasts. My recommendation for dealing with Cuba's ultra-wide noise, sometimes 50 kHz wide, consists of soliciting the NASB, HFCC, and WBCQ for an agreement on using the 500 kW capability of WBCQ's new transmitter to periodically override Cuba's broadcasts on a number of their frequencies until Cuba begins to play ball. In no way, shape, or form will Cuba be able to withstand such power. I'm willing to bet that Cuba, much, MUCH sooner than later, will understand that their former petulant and cavalier attitude on shortwave will have to be replaced with respect and cooperation. Let Cuba attempt to retaliate in vain if necessary. One either disciplines a petulant child like Cuba or the current intolerable situation continues. No one LIKES to discipline a petulant child, but it MUST be done unfortunately.
/RANT

This log will naturally be significantly marred by Cuba's wide-band noise on 13700 kHz. The frequency of 13690 kHz is pretty clear itself, but Cuba's adjacent noise just tarnishes it during Cuba's broadcasting.

Notice the radical plunge in reception around 1300Z. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's super jammer, Cuba!

I still get a lot of drop outs on this new frequency, but there are stretches during the afternoon when the signal peaks and is quite reliable. I've been trying to compile a list of programmes heard to see if there is some sort of regular schedule and will post the results shortly.

WINB Program Schedule

Hi Alan - Most of the time, we are taking a stream from our analogue service.
You would find it // to our internet and/or telephone streams.

Since we are not on both analogue and DRM at the same time, what you are hearing is a repeat of what we ran the day before on the analogue service.
You can find that schedule at winb.com

We have a few DRM-only programs such as Wavescan. I have been announcing such programs via Twitter at @SWWINB

I hope this helps and saves you the trouble of trying to compile a schedule from scratch.

I'd welcome any screen shots and/or audio files you have have, you can send them to winb40th@yahoo.com or share them via Twitter. Thanks.

Sincerely,

Hans

Hi Hans,

Thanks a lot for the update. I'd noticed that some programmes like 'Your Weekend Show', 'Doctor Wong' and 'Studio DX' seemed to appear at regular times, but many of the others without any regularity, so that explains things now.

I've been recording much of this week's output (in between drop outs), and it has been quite good at times during the mid-afternoon period here. I've also done a few screen dumps of the signal on my Dream software, and was planning to get some reports off to you.

I am subscribed to your Twitter feed, but being the only person on the planet who doesn't have a smartphone I have to remember to check it on my browser occasionally! :-)

I've just added a second sound card at long last, so can leave the DRM decoder running all the time now, which is a big help.

Thanks again,

WINB Datacasting continued..

2 Attachment(s)
My friend, Antonio, in Italy runs an interesting blog related to data transmissions on HF http://i56578-swl.blogspot.com/

Recently he directly received the WINB combo transmission and sent a report on twitter to WINB (attachment 1).

What is most interesting is that WINB has confirmed, in the twitter replies (attachment 2) that they are in fact running a separate data channel.

This appears to be the first time that WINB has acknowledged what everybody has been observing since they started their broadcasts/datacasting!

Mid-day here in downtown St. John's, Newfoundland (1550 UTC) and the WINB DRM signal on 13690 is making it here fairly well, though not high enough to warrant sticking with it. Audio decoding is about 30% of the time. My MR27024 (with an 8 m wire aerial) is registering fairly high MER rates -- 13 - 16 dB, but still with fairly poor decoding. My Avion (with the Sony AN-LP1 loop antenna) is showing lower MER: 6 to 10 dB.

--------------
EDIT, 45 minutes later, 1650UTC.
I took the Avion and the loop antenna downstairs after posting this. For whatever reason, after 1600 my reception of WINB's DRM was nearly perfect, with MER 13 to 18 dB. Very close to 100% decoding. I have just listened to most of a rightist talk or interview show, with a rightist interviewer talking to a rightist media fellow named Bob Parks, which I misheard as Marx -- I had to Google his company name to find his name. :)

I do not know if the reception improved so radically because after 1600 it intrinsically improved, or if somehow my downstairs is freer of noise. I will check this out over the next few days.

---------------
EDIT, 1705 UTC
AT 1700 the frequency shut down. The programme was Bob Bearman's Your Weekend Show.

PhilipOneL 07-11-2018 14:28

Just before local noon, (1530 UTC, 7 Nov 2018), I am hearing WINB with about 75% audio decoding on my Avion set, with the Sony loop antenna aimed just west of South, at Pennsylvania.

Downtown, St John's, Newfoundland. In my more electrically quiet room. . .

WINB 13690 kHz Signal Analysis

2 Attachment(s)
This morning the propagation skip shortened a little and I was able to receive a weak signal from the WINB combo signal. The System Evaluation screen (Attachment 1) shows that the DRM portion of the signal has a higher amplitude than the Data side. This is different from the transmissions earlier in the spring when the 15670 kHz spectrum looked the opposite with the Data portion at a higher level ( See thread: DRM WINB 15670 Khz message #44 attachment 2).

Attachment 2 (below) shows a recent view of the received spectrum from a KiwiSDR web receiver. The amplitude (A) of the datacasting portion is about 3dB lower than the DRM side. In addition a new "Guard Band" (B) has been introduced.

These changes are probably meant to reduce interference to the DRM signal by the datacasting component.

According to Antonio's blog http://i56578-swl.blogspot.com/2018/...rm-single.html the datacasting signal appears to be OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex) "that is not sending data but just an unmodulated (maybe) OFDM waveform".

This leads me to speculate, for what it's worth, that these relative low power WINB combo transmissions are primarily as a "proof of concept" to test the data simulcast configuration.

The lessons learned from these broadcasts, I continue to speculate, will probably be put to use with the new WBCQ Super station that is being built in Monticello Maine. The FCC filing documents indicate that there is a relationship with the new station and WINB.

WINB 13690 kHz Datacasting Signal Change

1 Attachment(s)
The datacasting portion of the WINB combo signal has appeared to have changed recently.

The attachment shows a DReaM System Evaluation screen with a barely receivable signal. The DRM portion is not showing but the Datacasting tones are clearly visible above the noise.

The datacasting amplitude of the tones is different from the earlier description posted in message #15 of this thread

More short skip day for this pathetic WINB combo signal. The signal was there for much of the morning but for the most part unrecognized by DReaM.

This same poor decoding was duplicated by the more sensitive KiwiSDR receivers around the mediterranean Sea. Otherwise no reception in Europe as polled by most of the KiwiSDR receivers.

This morning, Friday 13/3/20, just after 1200 UTC (9:30 am local here in Newfoundland), the WINB signal is strong enough for about 25% audio decoding, and now and again for up to 50 or even 60% for a minute or two. Generally not strong enough for pleasant listening, even if it were something other than Brother Stair, or his like, which is what it is.

MER 6 - 14 dB, some peaks at 17 and 18 dB.

Morphy-Richards 27024 + 8m wire aerial. Downtown St. John's.
