Very good reception tonight. Although the impulse response already shows a large number of reflections, the long-delayed peaks are still attenuated sufficiently and do not yet cause problems.

RTL on 1440 and the impulse response: A never ending nightmare. Too many dropouts, RTL should try another type of transmitting antennas to reduce the multipath problem or switch back to AM. This here does not make any sense any more.

The same procedure as every night :-(. At night RTL uses to have longer IR than DW 3995 kHz. The signal is very strong, but unusable.

just a short report. Sorry to say, but music transmitted by Vatican radio with comparable bitrate but in mono had a more pleasant sound. Perhaps this was a result of compression together with P-stereo on this RTL transmission.
Otherwise, reception was quite good.

Due to the bad IR here in Münster RTL radio 1440 kHz can not be received in an acceptable quality at night. I think, the problem is caused by the antennas of RTL. Although in Zeeland in the Netherlands the distance to the transmitter BBC Orfordness 1296 world is nearly the same as between Münster and RTL I have NEVER observed such strange IR when I tested BBC world in Zeeland. But both frequencies are nearly the same and normally the propagation should be the same too.

BBC is able to use mode A, and it works if you are nearby and far away. RTL does never work, neither nearby in Münster nor in England as some users have already written in this forum.

By the way, very often I am able to receive "Das Ding" with a very good signal and a good IR. The distance to the transmitter is nearly the same as to RTL. Unfortunately "Das Ding" has only 1 KW ERP and is suffering from interferences.

I think, for historical reasons RTL uses an antenna with a vertical diagramm similar to a tropical band antenna.

I am wondering if anybody of RTL responsible for DRM is reading the reception results in this forum.

interestingly, RTL's DRM transmission can be received quite well here in Munich at night recently. Also, there seems to be good reception near Frankfurt.
Compared to last winter, when reception was quite bad, results are much better this winter. No idea why.

Yes indeed, interestingly. At my location, the only chance to receive RTL is at the daytime, and at this moment about 17:00 during the dusk until the end of the drm transmission I can get UNTIL 35 dB SNR, but often i can already observe a very nervous IR with 3 or four peaks. The peaks outside of the maximum time are very weak, nevertheless they are growing permanently and at the end of the transmission the SNR declines to 20 dB. But still no dropouts although Mode A is used.

I still believe it seems to be a problem of the transmission antenna. If I am wrong, DRM itself seems to be unusable on MW at night, because the analog transmission is nearly perfect.

Perhaps RTL should rent a transmitter of BBC world in Orfordness too :-)

If what is written about the antenna characteristic on this page (http://www.drmradio.co.uk/html/marnach.html) is still valid, the fact that DRM reception works well in Munich and near Frankfurt is even more strange. But it doesn't provide an explanation about why it was different last winter. Perhaps it is just a matter of a different propagation now.

Reception in my area has improved a lot compared to last year, no idea why, only very few nights with problems during the last half year. I guess it is only a relatively small area where the problems mentioned by tacitus occur, that´s probably where skywave signals interfer with groundwave signals and both have about same signal strength. "0 dB echoes" are not a particular problem with DRM, that´s the same with DAB, DVB-T etc.

There is nothing like driving down the autobahn with the Mamas and Papas singing California Dreaming in FULL STEREO! :cool:
This is what I call DIGITAL radio! :D

I will never understand why people waste time with listening to bad audio at low bitrates. The new portable radios also seem to aim at these listeners who like bad audio and short battery lifetime. THis is the wrong way similar to the bad development of DAB in GB.

We need high quality audio and equipment or we will never see the people who left for FM back on the lower frequencies.

When RTL began transmitting last night, the impulse response didn't look nice and I also saw an on-channel carrier. Dropouts occured often.

Mediumwave conditions as a whole were much better this night than they were yesterday, Orfordness' signal was also received much better than yesterday.
Quite a good result from Marnach's signal, the impulse response was still prolonged (much more than on Orfordness' signal) but the essential peaks were still 10 to 20 dB above those that were delayed longer than the guard interval, see screenshot for a typical result.

2-stage antenna amp with BF245+BF199 inside,
Sat-Schneider DRT1 with a little preselection,
DELL Latitude D600 notebook running on batteries,
2x Celestion G12 plus 2x Celestion HF50 + POWER

Signal was a little weak at first when starting in noisy Cloppenburg.

March 10 on NRD525G was best in all that logs with about 88% Audio (note that AOR/active antenna was only 15% that same day/period), but I don't think that's it what potential listeners expect from "digital" since all other logs show far worse results

SNR was higher on a clear frequency without thunderstorm in the past.
I noticed some strange noise floor within the 12kHz filter of the DRT1 that was not visible on i.e. 1296 kHz and 1593 kHz at the same time. :confused:
