Quite bad results again, especially for the first hour.
Hi all,
very good results, except the first hour, see attachment

Perfect start tonight, but I'll go to bed now. But I let it logging...
Hi all,
good results in the first hour using the portable Sony/ferrite antenna

Today's results.
Not sure, but I think the big dropout at 15:40 was probably caused locally.
In all daytime drm on mediumwave seems to be a solid transmission mode - at least in the target area.
Hi all,
not much audio decoding during daytime before 1530, see attachment

Hi all,
good results in the first 2 hours last night, see attachment

Hi,
here are my results from the first hour.
I am not sure if the large difference in SNR is a result of the somewhat prolonged impulse response.
Roland
I got only occasional audio though interference was only visible in a few instances.
The software struggled to get the timing right as could be seen from the IR plot, but mostly, the impulse response just wasn't good enough.

Hi DRM's
Tonight there will be no DRM transmission from Marnach on 1440kHz. We are doing a major modification on a matching transformer.
Nico
Is there to be analogue broadcasts tonight or nothing at all? Thanks.

Hi,DRM's,
Tonight we will readjust our DRM modulators to the antenna network, so some greater dropouts tonight at your receivers will be 'normal' .

RTL still on air in DRM at 17:50 UTC ! :)
Very strong signal, see screenshot.

Presumably the extra hour was a one-off? Or is it to be regularly until 1800 UTC? Thanks.

I just switched on the winradio and let it run. Results don't look good.
Hi,
the signal was a bit weak last night and when it faded additionally, then there were dropouts.
Roland
Hi,
quite a nice and short impulse response tonight, see attachment.
Roland
Hi,
here is my report.
There were occasional dropouts from local switching transients (light switches etc.) and from a very rarely visible on-channel carrier.

Hi,
here is a short report on last night's reception.
Signal was not strong and there was also an interfering on-channel carrier.
The percentage of properly decoded audio improved after the bitrate change.

Listening to RTL DRM on mediumwave at daytime is really like listening to FM radio here. When I switched back to AM after the DRM-transmission ended I really had to laugh at this stepback in audio quality. When the first drm receivers will be available and people learn the difference there will be no way back to am.
Hi,
here are the results of my attempt to receive RTL under daylight conditions.
I thought, I had to give it a try because I had changed the way I couple the signal out of my loop last night such that it now delivers more signal.
It was interesting to see, that even under daylight conditions, the interfering on-channel carrier was also there.
Roland
Shortly after sunset, the signal came out of the noise but there was still not much audio.
The impulse response looked nice, however.
Roland
Sorry , but no signal to listen to. The signal is so weak that it is not possible for any SNR to be detected on anything other than DW on 3995.

Hi,
reception was quite good last night. As already noticed on the transmission from Orfordness, ionospheric conditions were such that the impulse response was quite short.

Perfect reception today on mediumwave at daytime.
Hi,
today, signal on this frequency is much stronger than what I'm used to.
Also an interesting impulse response.
Roland
Hi all,
here is a short report.
Reception is rather good tonight and a higher bitrate would be possible.
I think RTL needs to adjust bitrate with respect to current conditions by some means like a QoSAM system.
Roland
Hi,
reception is quite good today and Marnach's signal is very strong. Again, the impulse response shows a lot of peaks, sometimes the four main peaks are even equally strong. Nevertheless, the SNR is very good. Using Dream, the SNR value is almost at my limit.
Roland
Hi,
unfortunately, I can only post a short report, due to the fact that before, logging didn't work because I had forgotten to close DRMCalc which disables logging into the same logfile.
But, reception was equally good before the time logged.

The thing is AM does sound like FM in other parts of the world like the US Japan and Australia. I took my AM stereo tuner with me to Melbourne in December and listening to Magic 693 or 2CA 1053 in AM stereo was like listening to FM stereo. DRM stereo I'm afraid although it is a good improvment over our narrow spec AM still lacks the richness and warmth of a good wideband AM (stereo) station

This "richness and warmth" is most likely the result of a limited frequency response and perhaps also of harmonic distortion produced by the AM demodulator.
Some people will also claim that tube amplifiers produce a better sound but really, this is also most likely a result of similar harmonic distortion due to the 2nd order nature of the tube's transfer characteristics.
But let them have their fetishes...

It's the same with FM. Because of the chracteristics of AM you will never get the same depth with a digital signal be it DAB, DRM or even some say - the purists! - with CD's
Hi all,
Bad reception here during the last half hour this afternoon.
Hi all,
today I made a daytime reception test. To achieve this result I had to do two things:
1) I removed a 25 dB attenuator in the bandfilter for mediumwave which Kenwood engineers had implemented to protect the receiver from overload by local MW transmitters
2) I built an EWE antenna (for more informations about this antenna search in Google for EWE antenna or EWE antenne) This antenna deliveres much less signal than my 30 m long wire on MW but always a better SNR up to about 8 MHz!
Bernd, DF9RB
Hi,
a very strong signal tonight but an impulse response that, so far, does not allow for audio to be decoded.
Roland
Hi,
result improved after the bitrate change, but not necessarily as a result of the bitrate change. Now the impulse response also looks a bit better.
See the attached report.

Today I tried my loop under the roof, same good results.
The interference in the morning probably was my washing machine.
I had to switch off for some minutes in the afternoon, so the graph is split into two parts. Here the first:
FritzWue
30-01-2005, 17:15
...and here is the second part. If the software told me right RTL used 19.68kbps during the last hour. The greater changes in SNR are caused by temporary i.f. overload because of bad agc. I always have to switch on more antenna attenuation manually when it gets dark outside.

Your the daddy Fritz:D I wonder if/when we get portables you will get good reception with just an ordinary antenna?
1440 is useless for me though I'm not in the target area been listening to 6095 this afternoon no log but fairly good would loke a higher bitrate on 6095 to sound more like 1440, any chance RTL/BCE? Again I know I'm not in the target area of 6095 but enjoy the music, now listening to Radio 10 Gold analouge:(

Hi Paul,
I think at least during wintertime no problem here although I'm at the end of the target area. During summer there will be difficulties with lightning crashes. I know the signal well as I was sometimes also listening in a.m. at daytime. My location is the red dot at the upper end of the map:

Unattended log with exactly the same setup that gives 100% audio at daytime. :(
Hi,
a strong signal, no visible interference but sometimes a long impulse response.
Roland
Interesting!
RTL is transmitting in mode C and is also using a forbidden bandwidth of 10 kHz tonight.
Audio bandwidth is 5 kHz and SBR is not used.
But I'm afraid, reception is not better in any way despite the signal being quite strong.
Roland
Hi,
here is another example of the IR.

Roland
Hi all,
here is my report for last night.
73, Simone
Hi,
as already observed on the late transmission from Orfordness on 1296 kHz, ionospheric conditions are such that the impulse response is good today. Delayed components are present but their amplitudes rapidly fall off over delay time.
See screenshot for a typical IR.
RTL is back to mode B again. Signal is very strong. Decoding result is good.
Roland
Here is my 1-hour report.

Today's report.
During the first minutes I could not decode the signal.
The decreases in snr were probably caused locally, the one to the end by i.f. overload in my receiver without agc, then all back to normal with 20dB attenuator in the coax line.
Hi all,
good results in the last half hour today, analysis also shows good delay at that time of day

At 01:30 UTC reception improved.
Hi all,
quite good except the first hour last night, overall less than 3% dropouts, see attachment

Reception was quite good last night. The impulse response was unusually short and there was only a single dropout (plus the one caused by mode switching) during my logging period.
Roland
I have'nt listened for some weeks, very stable tonight. I have to ask though going ot now but I've 'lost' the Evaluation window in DReam..
How do I get it back on to the screen ?! Please help someone as I can't see signal strength etc !

Roland
Again a strong signal with a nice and almost steady impulse response today.

Hi all,
great results during the first hour last night, see attachment
73, Simone
Why are they still switching to lower quality mono after 1am ?
Hi all,
signal was quite strong from 15:30 with SNR> 20 dB, a few occasional dropouts with the higher bitrate, getting more stable towards the end of the transmission, not a single dropout during the last 15min, see attachment
(sorry I started logging a bit late )
73, Simone
Hi all,
results would be perfect if either the signal level were higher or my periodic local interference were gone. So MW DRM DX on daytime is not good here. High bitrate in the last 2 hours

does anybody else also have this stuttering audio on RTL's signal?
I have 100% MSC CRC but the audio gets interrupted more and more ...
Update (01:04 UTC) Now, audio has almost completely disappeared, there is only an occasional burst.
Roland
yes exactly the same here, just an occasional burst of audio. snr 20. must be something wrong with the audio stream.
Hi,
thanks Paul, I had already feared that something was wrong on my experimental everything-from-the-scrapyard DRM PC setup which I am just testing here. :)

Hi,
it's amazing how good reception was, considering the fact that the sun has not yet set.
Roland
Hi,
my first log of RTL on 1440kHz with my new (vintage) antenna , about 240km away from the transmitter site. Not bad for daytime reception. Very few short dropouts (<1sec.), probably caused by the starter of a fluorescent tube only 4 metres away from the antenna.
RTL could be received here during daylight hours in AM via groundwave before they started DRM but the sound wasn't very good due to manmade noise. I'm very satisfied with the DRM receptionon 1440kHz- daytime.

Hi Simone,
There were no breaks in the afternoon transmission of yesterday 16th.
Also there were no long Tx breaks of 15 minutes ore more as stated in your logs from 5th and 9th this month. Strange things may happen near Frankfurt. (Airplanes,sky-scrapers ??) Is this every time the same reception combination? (Antenna, receiver,PC)
Nico
Hi Nico,
thanks for your comment, the same problem occured again today (and many days when I did not post it), I also tried with a second Rx and antenna, similar results, when turning the loop 90 degrees I could at least see your signal in the spectrum today and got occasional sync, no interferences that I noticed, results in the last minutes were influenced by changing antenna posiotion etc, would have been >21 dB, stable.
Btw no skyscrapers that I can see around here, just open fields and another MF station not far away :)

Hi Simone,
Again this afternoon, neither a TX break nor a modulation break, all Tx Led's were green and no special logs on the PCs.
What is the frequency and distance to the adjacent MF station?
Nico
Hi Nico,
thanks, so it must be some kind of local problem or propagation related, the other MF station is about 6km from here, their frequency is 873 kHz, I always have to use good shielded cables and grounding to keep it out, but they are not doing any changes at that time, our own MF Tx site is 25 km from here (on 594 kHz), usually not causing any trouble.
Simone

Quite good last night. When will we have 24/7 DRM on this frequency?
Hi all,
quite good at the beginning, some dropouts in the last hour, see attachment

Hi,
some fading and interference from another on-channel station last night.
On some of the songs that were being played, stereo didn't sound good.

48712 Gescher-A31-A02-B224- Essen center
Audio did not sound good, phantom harmonics at high frequencies and stereo somehow too spatial.
Mediumwave does not work very well when entering areas like the Rhein-Ruhr-District, too much underpasses and high voltage power lines.
On the autobahn A31 I had only problems with high voltage lines, but downtown Essen I could hardly hear anything.
The same way back listening on 15440khz is here:

Here also good this afternoon, but SNR could be higher.
I get 4dB more on 1296kHz with the same setup.
Hi,
rather good today during the first hour. Interesting to see, that the impulse response from Marnach is longer then the one from Orfordness.
Roland
Hi,
Near perfect last night (22 Sept).
regards
Bob
Hi all,
lots of minor dropouts last night, see attachment
73, Simone
Quite nice, but not very stable. SNR History looks much worse than the log. The reason is surely a very chaotic impulse reponse.
I also wonder why I have to direct my loop with quite an offset to Luxemburg
Good Night

Todays test with the whip antanna.
Clearly no daytime reception (also on AM in earlier times), but until some hours after local sunrise and also some hours before sunset it works .
What I urgently need is a BIG loop ;)
and here is the log for tonight.
Results were better in August, when I used my mini-loop. Or have conditions changed since? - I do not dare to decide.

Going from 48712 Gescher to 47169 Duisburg, then to 45127 Essen, the tranmission ended when entering the A2 in 45964 Essen-Gladbeck.
I replaced my old BF900+BF199 antenna amplifier with a new one using cascaded BF245+BF199, works much better.

From 48712 Gescher to 45879 Gelsenkirchen center.
To the end streetcars in the middle of the road and a lot of cables above the street. Mediumwave is very sensitive to that.
Reception on 49m on the way back here:

Quite a number of ionospheric reflections, see attached screenshot of the impulse response.

Quite good despite the many ionospheric reflections.
Roland
A bit of daylight reception.

Hi all,
perfect decoding last night, see attachment
Simone
...slowly fading in around sunset. It stopped before the optimum was reached.
Unfortunately MW is VERY sensitive for local interference, thus
- Thou shalt not switch on lights
- Thou shalt not switch off lights
- Thou shalt not use household electrics
- Thou shalt not watch TV
- Thou shalt not work on your computer
........
Yep, and:
-you should not have neighbours with electricity
-you should not live too close to a railway
- you should power down the whole city where you live in
- the sun should not go down
- other contries should shutdown their AM tx
I also see MW as the most critical band for DRM. I have still not seen any really reliable DRM transmission on MW. Still waiting for my s9+60 dB signal.
Hi all,
a few dropouts in the first and the last hour, quite good for the 2 hours inbetween

Hi all,
quite good again last night, seems to be more reliable than at the beginning of the year

Good rf result, but at 20kbps the sound could be better.
There is always something like a time delay or echo audible at higher audio frequencies. I can't hear this on 1296kHz or 1611kHz where I am listening at the moment.
