SWR 1485 kHz [Archive] - DRM Software Radio Forums

Hi,

using the tuned loop antenna, I was able to receive the DRM test transmission on 1485 kHz from Kaiserslautern last night. Here is a screenshot. TX distance, calculated using the coordinates of the nearby AFN transmitter, was approximately 317 kms.
Unfortunately, field strength and SNR were much too low for audio, but the station label and the labels of various other services were displayed, see screenshot. 1485 kHz is a low power channel that is used by many stations all over Europe, so the channel cannot be expected to be clear.

On 7th Oct early in the evening 18h00 conditions must have been good for a path to north London I managed to achieve service descriptions for Das Ding. Has any body ever decoded audio in UK?

hello everyone

A few days ago I got a mixer 455 to 12 kHz. I took the 455kHz from my AOR 7030 and used it.
Yesterday evening I listened to SWR Das Ding.And strangely I could not "hear "it on the ALA 1530 whatever the direction or on an other magnetic loop. But it was fair on a T2FD only 17 meters long.

I think this strange , but maybe there is a logical explanation.

Th e reason I use "hear"is that the SWr came never over 10 dB so the station ID no problem but the audio was never heard.

Unfortunately I hear french and spanish a.m. on that frequency coming from the same direction at my location, so cannot reduce the interference with the loop antenna.

From information available elsewhere (http://forum.myphorum.de/read.php?f=8773&i=215668&t=215668&nr=1), it is highly likely that this is not only Kaiserslautern but also Wolfsheim perhaps transmitting with a bit more power.
Signal strength on this frequency has increased quite a bit here in Munich during the last few days but interference levels are still high.

The signal comes not only from Kaiserslautern. It seems that SWR has started also DRM transmissions from Wolfsheim on 1485khz, because the signal strenght improved a lot here in Frankfurt. It is now at daytime at S9+5dB, but the SNR is quite low. I think that they still have some technical problems.

Hi all,
SWR´s DRM signal reaches now into the South Western part of Hessen and can be received quite good west of Frankfurt. Here is an example of mostly mobile reception just using the whip antenna. In the city of Frankfurt and North/ East of Frankfurt no decoding.
Also the website is still empty, Journaline and the slideshow could be received.

I'm very disappointed about the poor DRM reception on MW here. This station is only 50km away from me. Ok, its low power, but signal strength is stable at S9+5dB. The main problem is my local periodic interference from which I still don't know the source. Reception after sunset is not possible at all. So I'll need to wait for a S9+60dB signal here :mad:

Hi Carsten,
maybe it is worth asking AOR about a modification for your Rx to improve sensitivity on MF. I´m not that familiar with the AOR 7030 but I guess as with most receivers sensitivity is deliberately down in the medium wave range. I guess it is worth trying it as less than 10km west of your location decoding is possible, but then you would certainly need a good filter to keep 594 kHz out ;)

I'm still holding out to see if I can get audio from this station. No luck to date but at least I got SDC. My last success was also in October, last year - no audio that time either. One day.....

I can see a typical DRM signal on the screen. But any time software attempts to sync it does not even get the label decoded. :(

I really shouldn't have bought a receiver with poor sensitivity in the lower ranges...........

N.B.: I guess it is Kaiserslautern, because I had the antenna on the western side of my appartment. When I first discoverd the 1485 from Berlin I was on the eastern side.

in the late afternoon today SWR changed the configuration, audio bitrate has slightly increased but the data services have been reduced, see attachment, now the required SNR for decoding should be much lower.

The Rheinsender is back on air with Dasding. Nearly perfect daylight reception is now possible in Frankfurt:)

They managed to stay this weekend alive! Fantastic results. No audible dropouts at daylight. But my local interference decreases SNR from 26 downto 13 db. But that is even enough for good audio. And it sounds really good.

Very good today. I got a slightly higher (0.7dB) SNR with a 10 dB attenuation. Signal strength is a rock stable s9+7 dB. But the end was quite digitally.

From the short bits of audio I can tell that the sound quality seems to be very good with high bass level. :cool:

The sound quality is the best I've heard so far. I recorded today a short piece with music and talk. It is in WMA 9 lossless codec. Mediaplayer should play this. But be aware,it is 20MB large!

Driving from near Bad Honnef to Koblenz center via A3 and A48.
At first there were many kilometers with high voltage powerlines and the fast train Cologne-Frankfurt running parallel to the autobahn, and to the end the signal was not strong enough in town,
but the audio was really good, a pleasure to listen to! :)

good results at the FM stations Eltville ( 1124- 1142 UTC)and Bingen (1220- 1300) using the Sony SW7600GR/ferrite antenna, some dropouts on mobile reception especially bridges were a problem and interestingly also many dropouts on the ferry when crossing the Rhine, see attachment

Something must have been changed in Wolfsheim. I compared it with the results from Monday. Fieldstregth is 6 dB lower now, this caused a 3 dB lower SNR around midday and more deep dropouts caused by my local interference. Signal is not strong enough to beat this local interference anymore. Transmission stopped at 14 UTC. I really hope, that they will be back with more power. White graphis fieldstrength in dbµV from today and fuchsia graph is fieldstrength from Monday

As the signal is weaker in Frankfurt, the reception got worse. No change against periodic local QRM and later an Co-channel AM station got stronger. The carrier was always visible. Logged today with FRG100 and signalstrenght.

Two hours today. Quite good unless my local interference attacks the DRM signal. I made a screenshot at 11:08UTC where you can see, how my local interference looks like. Noise floor rises up several dBs from LW up to 49m Band, especially in MF there are lots of small carrieres and a few stonger carriers. And i still don't know where it comes from. Formerly the DRM signal from Wolfsheim was resistent against this interference, but now it looses from time to time.

Mobile log from near Koblenz to Pirmasens driving on the A61, A63, A6, A62.
Reception was somewhat disappointing.
There was a cyclic crackling on the modulation. Don't know if this was real or perhaps DREAM has a problem with the signal.
When passing Kaiserslautern on the A6 there was no increase in signal at all which makes me wonder if this station is still on the air.
The signal is very strong when passing Wolfsheim near the Alzey autobahn crossing.

Today the signal was even 1-2 db weaker. Maybe because we have a lot of snow in the region here today. But the reception was quite good. The droouts downto 1200 Frames were not audible with DRMSWR. Only the deeper drops caused audible drops. I could not hear any crackling.

Driving from TX in Wolfsheim back to Frankfurt. I know, that the loop is really not good for incar reception, but I have nothing else.

There was no big difference in sound quality when listening DRM with the car radio to other FM stations. But reception in the first part was really better than from FM stations. No hiss, no crackle, no noise.

A very stable signal if you look at the fieldstrength graph. These dips are caused by an unknown local interference. But these dips are hardly audible. SWR has improved the audio bitrate and kicked the multimedia.
