Just a blip received on the first transmission. No signal received on the second. :(

Brendan1
12-09-2010, 04:35
This was probably the poorest day for reception of RCI here, ever. Almost nothing in the morning, and what look like 'false positives' during the afternoon session. Absolutely the worst.

Brendan1
12-09-2010, 21:56
I don't know but I think RCI may be off air today. No signal this morning, virtually nothing this afternoon either, or the ionospheric absorption is near perfect for the last two days. Only some minor, possibly false, signal data on the one graph. :(

AF4MP
12-09-2010, 22:15
Brendan, I think you are correct - it appears that CBC/RCI was not transmitting. My logs show no signals received.

Brendan1

Definitely on-air today: a very mediocre morning with a much better afternoon.

Hi all,

The signal was good tonight. At 21:12 a co-channel carrier appeared affecting the decoding and SNR. At 21:29 an AM signal on 9810 kHz appeared and killed DRM by its splatters...

Brendan1
14-09-2010, 23:08
The morning shows some improvement, and the afternoon was excellent. :)

Brendan1
15-09-2010, 22:59
Dream wasn't working until the afternoon. I had to reset it and the logger at lunch time.

Quite good reception too! :)

FritzWue

65% CDA until 17:00 UTC, then AM signal ontop:

Brendan1
16-09-2010, 23:20
The morning is still rather poor, but afternoon today was very, very good. :)

FritzWue
17-09-2010, 17:10
For one hour reception is possible here now.
AM interference before 16:00 UTC, and after 17:00 UTC some portuguese AM transmission ontop.
VoR Taldom on 9850 kHz is about 50 (!) dB stronger here!

Brendan1
17-09-2010, 22:50
Fritz - I have AM interference from 1500 to 1600 here as well: China Radio International. It certainly never helps my DRM reception... :(

The morning was quite poor, but the afternoon was better as usual.

FritzWue
18-09-2010, 17:18
Brendan, this transmission is not addressing europe, so from the backside of the antenna it is real dx. Today the propagation conditions were not good, the signal was weaker than the last days, so only fair reception result. After 16:59 UTC a strong AM carrier is on frequency making reception impossible.

Brendan1
18-09-2010, 22:07
Fritz - I am amazed that you get as much of RCI as you do. I don't get all that much of RCI most of the time, and I'm only 4200km away!

REE Cariari in Costa Rica is the closest DRM station to me (3700km), with RCI in second place. After that, Bonaire and Montsinery are next, and then Europe. My best out-of-area DX is RNZI at 11000km, and reception here is very consistent during my evenings and night time (daylight hours it's non-existent).

What is truly hard for me to receive are the South America broadcasts: CVC and HCJB have never been easy or common DX for me.

A bad morning, a great afternoon for RCI today, by the way.

AF4MP
18-09-2010, 22:23
This afternoon's reception report. No audio decoded on the first transmission, and about 28% on the second!

Brendan1
19-09-2010, 22:06
I managed to mess up the morning log, but the afternoon log makes up for that stupidity... ;)

AF4MP
19-09-2010, 22:24
An improvement in reception of both transmissions. There is even a couple of audio blips on the first one!

Digger
20-09-2010, 21:25
If it weren't for the strong carrier sitting on the channel, the decoding of RCI would be perfect...

AF4MP
20-09-2010, 22:17
Some more improvement in the second transmission!

Brendan1
20-09-2010, 23:31
Not all that good today for either transmission. Propagation is certainly 'off' from yesterday.

The VOACAP transmitter footprint model for the first RCI 9800 kHz transmission (16 UTC September 2010) shows the limited coverage (attachment 1).

The prediction for the later transmission at 21 UTC is better (attachment 2). Although Brendan's reception tends to be better than forecast and mine seems to be worse!

Digger
21-09-2010, 21:25
Wow, but with a carrier slap bang in the middle 40 dB over CRI I had to give up...

Same as usual here, lousy morning, great afternoon. Propagation has recovered a bit from yesterday.

AF4MP
22-09-2010, 11:33
Yesterday's reception reports.

AF4MP
22-09-2010, 12:44
I noticed that in my VOACAP plots for the RCI 9800 kHz 2nd transmission, that were uploaded, the 30 dBu contour was missing.

In case anyone is interested, I'm attaching a couple of expanded plots one for 21 UTC and the other for 22 UTC that probably provide a more complete picture of the predicted transmitter footprint.

Brendan1
22-09-2010, 23:14

Befeore 16:30 UTC and after 17:00 UTC the signal is lost in AM interference:

Brendan1
24-09-2010, 22:02
Well, today I had some brief decoding in the morning, and with the signal level rising towards the end of the broadcast period, it looks like there is some improvement going on.

The afternoon was great as usual.

AF4MP
24-09-2010, 22:24
Some audio decoded at the end of the first transmission, and the second started off promising but the signal took a nose dive half way through.

A weak and unstable signal at the start of my log, conditions improved later, btw now in the US (Adirondack Mountains, New York state, about 200 km South of Montreal).

Hi Simone,

Welcome to the USA! :)

I am familiar with your location having lived in Ottawa, and Brockville, Ontario, Canada just 100 km north of the Adirondacks (I used to go ski-ing there!).

What intrigues me is that my VOACAP transmitter footprint plot predicted your location as having the strongest RCI 9800kHz signal strength at that time and date!

Although one reception report is subject to random variables, my question is: who is receiving the first RCI transmission well?

Brendan1
25-09-2010, 03:36
What we need are internet receivers that do DRM directly at the site and can stream the audio. None of the ones I've ever seen do DRM, only analog modes. Someone, somewhere might know something different...

Having one right in the northeast, say somewhere in New Jersey or Pennsylvania (away from noise if possible) would be quite interesting to have log broadcasts for the east coast. Real-time feedback available for everyone.

Brendan1
25-09-2010, 22:01
A typical, poor morning; a typical excellent afternoon.

simone
25-09-2010, 22:26
Hi Zyg,

thanks, there are actually quite a few people from Ottawa down here this weekend.
After looking at your plots I had expected much better results here, best period today was 1630- 1655 UTC, a very weak signal on the second transmission.

@Brendan: There are receivers that can decode DRM and stream RSCI data over the internet, i.e. FhG receivers (rather expensive) but also Dream supports the RSCI protocol, which is much better than only streaming audio.

Simone

AF4MP
25-09-2010, 22:37
Reception slowly improving here.

Simone,

I don't know why the signals are so poor at your location. However, the eastern edge of the plot is about 200 km from your location. It is not much of a distance for the propagation variables to expand (or shrink) the transmitter footprint by that amount.

My plots are forecasts and just like weather forecasts are not accurate everyday!

Brendan1
26-09-2010, 22:03
Some audio spikes in the morning, which makes it a good log. The afternoon was perfect today, with only minor dropouts.

Simone - Interesting information, I did not know that.

This afternoon's reception report.

Brendan1
27-09-2010, 22:59

AF4MP
28-09-2010, 22:13

Brendan1
29-09-2010, 02:10
Simone - I am seeing very incremental changes here, as the days grow shorter. The morning hours show a slowly increasing signal strength, with bursts of decoding as the ionosphere comes and goes. The afternoon quickly (just a few weeks really) went from nothing to nearly perfect here. As I recall, last winter I had nearly perfect reception both morning and afternoon.

Much the same as it has been for weeks: not-so-good morning, great afternoon.

AF4MP
02-10-2010, 22:14
Had to move and lower the receive antenna to be just above the ground. The 2nd log reflects this.

I hope to have a better antenna up in the next few days.

Brendan1
03-10-2010, 22:01
Lightning this afternoon contributed a lot of the dropouts. Not much change otherwise.

AF4MP
04-10-2010, 22:10
Not sure if it's my new long wire receive antenna or whether it's good propagation, but this is the best first broadcast from RCI that I can remember.

99.71% audio received in the four hour transmission. EXCELLENT! :D

Brendan1
04-10-2010, 23:15
Nice work Zyg! I'd say it's the new antenna, and I'm jealous.

The morning was only slightly better here, and the afternoon now conflicts with Disco Palace/TDP, so no afternoon log here.

Brendan1
05-10-2010, 23:41
The morning shows definite signs of improvement today, even a solid block of about 15 minutes worth of decoding.

AF4MP
05-10-2010, 23:56
Today's reception report.

Thank you, Brendan! I made some final adjustments to the antenna this morning.

There was a disconnected wire at the antenna balun that caused the initial 14 minute receive signal loss. :o

Brendan1
19-10-2010, 23:18
Not so good here. Used the Datong AD370 on it yesterday and today, very poor results for RCI here.

Not to mention my PC crashed at 1852. I did manage to get it reset at lunch time (1925).

AF4MP
19-10-2010, 23:37
Still excellent reception - 99.82% audio. :)

Brendan1
20-10-2010, 23:44

Not bad reception, at least there was RF showing for the entire period. Not much decoding however.

AF4MP
21-10-2010, 12:09

AF4MP
21-10-2010, 23:44
This afternoon's reception report - 99.32% audio.

There was a signal anomaly at 18:04. Not sure if it was transmitter or propagation related. The log plot is zoomed in at that time (attachment 2).

Brendan1
22-10-2010, 03:04
I don't seem to have any sort of variation around 1804, but then the RF was very up and down the graph today. Not much decoding here.

22-10-2010, 18:14
I don't seem to have any sort of variation around 1804, but then the RF was very up and down the graph today. Not much decoding here.

@Brendan1
Interesting, this transmission is for NA,
but here in EU we seem to get a little bit more than in AZ. :)
Signal is strong here on my 2x 40m 90° V-dipole pointing northwest.
Decoding is only depending on AM interference.

Brendan1
22-10-2010, 22:06
Fritz, I tend to think that Sackville has some rather large and powerful back lobes on their antenna system - how else to explain it? :(

I am more than a few degrees off the beam here, and typically this is not an easy time of year to receive Sackville's DRM out west. Winter is a much better season for that.

AF4MP
22-10-2010, 22:28
Another excellent afternoon - 99.87% audio. :)

Brendan1
23-10-2010, 22:58
It may only be 15% CDA today, but this is a definite improvement for my QTH.

AF4MP
23-10-2010, 23:40
Another excellent afternoon - 99.90% audio.

The SNR plot has a series of blips on it - have no idea what is causing that.

Brendan1
24-10-2010, 20:25
Things are getting better! The CDA was 27% today, which is the best here for many weeks.

AF4MP
25-10-2010, 13:36
Yesterday afternoon's excellent reception - 99.78%. :)

AF4MP
25-10-2010, 22:25
Today's excellent reception report - 99.67% audio. :)

Brendan1
25-10-2010, 23:11
While nowhere nearly as good as Zyg's log, I am seeing improvement and signs of a slow change in overall reception. A few more weeks and my reception should be nearly as good as his currently is, which I have found is very typical for locations on the west coast/western US.

Brendan1
26-10-2010, 19:31
The CDA was 46% today, so it's still improving. :)

AF4MP
26-10-2010, 22:27
Another excellent reception report - 99.77% audio! :)

AF4MP
27-10-2010, 22:30
Continuing excellent - 99.31% audio. :)

Brendan1
27-10-2010, 23:33
Down slightly from yesterday, but I still think it's good! 33% CDA.

AF4MP
28-10-2010, 22:26
Excellent - 99.76% audio! :)

Brendan1
28-10-2010, 23:35
Reception was off compared to the previous two days, just under 6% CDA.

AF4MP
29-10-2010, 22:27
Another excellent afternoon - 99.84% audio. Logging started 5 min late.

Brendan1
29-10-2010, 23:23
Dream crashed while I was away at breakfast (I'm off on Friday's! :) ) so this log is in two parts with a gap in the middle.

Reception was not too good, however.

Brendan1
30-10-2010, 19:07
Well, the CDA was 22% today, which, while low, is better than the last two days.

AF4MP
30-10-2010, 22:40
Another excellent reception afternoon - 99.87% audio! :)

Brendan1
31-10-2010, 19:12
The CDA is back up to 37% today, and that's an improvement. CBC did not go until 2005 as the new schedule indicates, instead they stopped an hour earlier, at the "old" time.

AF4MP
01-11-2010, 12:29
The first transmission excellent - 99.88% audio! :)

The second 94.27% audio.

Brendan,

RCI are on their "transitional" schedule and will commence the new one on November 7.

Brendan1
01-11-2010, 18:40
Zyg - thanks for that. It's funny they've chosen to do that because they are now starting an hour later, per the new schedule, so why not keep the last hour going? Of course, we're a little weird here in Arizona, where there is no Daylight Savings time except on the Navajo Reservation up north.

Reached 60% CDA today, which is the best in months! :)

Forgot that RCI now has an afternoon broadcast that no longer conflicts with TDP/DP. Above 99% for this one, which is really nice!

AF4MP
01-11-2010, 22:43
Both transmission's excellent - 99.94% and 99.73% audio! :)

02-11-2010, 22:34
Wow, things are certainly improving here! Even the morning session was over 93% CDA today, and the afternoon was just below perfect. I like it!

AF4MP
02-11-2010, 22:40
No complaints for the two reception reports - 99.47% and 97.30% audio. :)

AF4MP
03-11-2010, 22:44
Excellent results again for both transmissions - 99.88% and 99.37% audio! :)

Well, the morning suffered here today, but the afternoon was near perfect. I'm not going to complain...

AF4MP
04-11-2010, 22:48
Excellent results continue for both transmissions - 99.89% and 96.54% audio! :)

Brendan1
05-11-2010, 22:06
This mornings' session wasn't bad, but there is still room for improvement, including the rather abrupt and large off-air period in the middle. The afternoon had the first 12 minutes as dead air, and after that it was excellent.

Looks like someone is having some TX problems. :(

AF4MP
05-11-2010, 23:11

Another fine day: the morning was 99.70%, and the afternoon was 99.83%. :D

AF4MP
11-11-2010, 01:57
This afternoon's reception reports - 99.79% and 99.78% audio.

Some bobbles during both sessions, so less than 100% both times.

AF4MP
12-11-2010, 13:19
Another set of excellent reception reports - 99.83% and 99.78% audio! :)

Brendan1
12-11-2010, 22:20

AF4MP
13-11-2010, 00:01
This afternoon's reception - 99.80% and 91.9% audio. Apart from the start anomaly, the doppler was peaking strangely...?

Zyg,

I think that is very bad coordination.
There are only a few DRM stations on air and then even interference between two of them.
Today I had 1.5 hour time window to receive CBC on 9800 kHz.
In between someone tested in AM 5 kHz down for some minutes,
but that obviously was not RDP Portugal who started with a 20 kHz wide AM signal at 18:00 UTC.

Brendan1

Zyg - regarding that spike in the delay that killed your reception, I noticed that I have the same peak, although at a lower strength. Interesting indeed.

This afternoon's reception report - 99.88% and 38.45% audio.

The 2nd transmission audio disappeared starting at 22:22. This does correlate with the local sunset and the accompanying terminator grey (or gray) path.

AF4MP
06-12-2010, 00:28
My second log this afternoon (please see last post) shows the audio disappearing at 22:22 and then all the other plots, SNR doppler etc., vanish at 22:28. This happens to coincide with the terminator grey line reaching my receive location (please see attachment - made using DX Atlas). Coincidence?

The other interesting aspect is that this is about as far as the terminator (and accompanying grey line) reaches at that particular time for the year. In the days ahead it will pull back at that time even though the shortest day of the year is still two weeks away!

It's all to do with the sun and earth! ;)

Fritz - at times in the past I was mistaken for being Canadian, mostly due to my voice/accent. I grew up near the Canadian border (about 25km away) and at the time of my now distant youth I would have sounded just like someone on the other side of the line. That also means that if I have to, I can be a fake Canadian very easily... :p Seriously though, I like Canada and the Canadians!

Brendan, I was observing the end of the first transmission and the interference is definitely RRI 9805 kHz (although this time it just reduced the SNR and did not affect the audio decode). RRI closes its transmission at about 5 mins before the hour, and I saw how the RCI SNR immediately improved by 2 or 3 dB after that happened!

Please see post 2182 for the spectrum plot.
