Well, not the best reception for CBC, especially the mid-day (first third) portion.

Much like yesterday: not so good first portion, better last segment.

Not too bad results here in Germany last night, perfect decoding during the NASB broadcast and the first 15 minutes from Sweden, still 90% audio from RCI.

One big long OUCH today! Worst log for 9800 in weeks. :(

Better than yesterday, that's for sure! Still not too hot during the first half of the transmission.

Wow, my log is the pits today! I don't know what happened... This is a little bit short today, as I logged the special RNW broadcast for NASB today instead for the last hour.

Brendan1
13-05-2007, 02:09
A slow beginning today, but conditions certainly improved. Par for the course lately.

Alan Johnson
13-05-2007, 02:12
A slow start here as well - I think the big dip occurred as I was switching antennas.

KB0VE
13-05-2007, 02:21
Mostly unmonitored while mowing the yard this afternoon. Rocky start but a strong finish. The last hour's RCI (China) program was solid audio with just a few short breaks. Signal strength was only S5 this afternoon but ended at S9 during the last hour.

Alan Johnson
14-05-2007, 02:03
Took a little while to "warm up", then pretty good.

Fairly disturbed conditions today, as well as what looks like a transmitter outage.

KB7GF
15-05-2007, 03:20
Yes, it looks there was an outage between 22:00 and 22:30 UTC. There are two logs today - one for 19:45 - 22:00 and one for 22:30 - 23:59.

Brendan1
16-05-2007, 02:09
Not bad today, although it looks there was another TX problem in the 21-2200 hours slot.

Brendan1
17-05-2007, 02:25
Hmmm, another gap in the program today. What gives?

KB7GF
17-05-2007, 05:42
Same gaps here....hmmm...

Brendan1
18-05-2007, 02:05
Since the big gap happens at the same time every day, it must a be drop for another broadcast from CBC or an analog period. I'll try to listen tomorrow and see what's up.

KB7GF
18-05-2007, 06:36

Hi Brendan and Mark,
I also got this gap, looking at signal strength in my graph, I would say there is no transmission at that time anymore, wasn´t this the NASB slot for the special transmissions? DW have stopped I guess.
Simone

Brendan1
19-05-2007, 03:10
You're right of course, Simone, that was the NASB slot. I didn't listen today, I forgot it was only Friday when I wrote that I would check today. End of the school year insanity, that is all I will say (I'm a teacher).

Outside of the new gap, not bad today.

simone
19-05-2007, 05:06
Great results today after the break.
Simone

Brendan1
19-05-2007, 23:14
Just a quick note - there is no analog transmission during this slot in CBC's afternoon relay sequence. I checked other bands as well, and CBC is simply off the air.

The schedule data from Dream's source, and Klaus Schneider's chart, show "various" as being on air from Sackville during this time slot.

Brendan1
21-05-2007, 01:12
Very up and down today. :(

A very slow and difficult start today - I blame propagation. :(

KB7GF
24-05-2007, 04:49
Yes, a difficult copy here also. Brendan, I'm thinking that the minor geomagnetic storm had a more dramatic impact on my log because of the higher latitude path.

Brendan1
30-05-2007, 04:06
Two parts, bracketing the 2200-2230 gap. The first is lousy: I've never quite seen a trough like this on any log I've recorded. The second is excellent, showing just how fast the band can change.

Brendan1
02-06-2007, 01:22
Interesting how the scheduled break in the transmission shows the band changing remarkably. :)

Brendan1
03-06-2007, 03:17
Slightly worse than yesterday, but the later session was still very good.

Brendan1
04-06-2007, 03:02

Two parts today, morning and afternoon. Some good long period logs.

Brendan1
22-09-2007, 02:46
Morning and afternoon again. Shut down a little early in the afternoon to try some other frequencies, had no luck. Also, the 2230-2300Z slot CBC is off-air, apparently no one wants the slot?

Alan Johnson
23-09-2007, 05:37
Difficult propagation today. Still no actual RCI programming when I checked at 2130 to 2200 - just the English and French "Radio Canada International" and the four piano notes. The usual NAB gap at 2200 to 2230.

Alan Johnson
23-09-2007, 23:13
Much better today. Still just the interval signal at the RCI time slot. I sent a note to RCI via the on-line reception report option and mentioned the gap at 2200 to 2230 as well. I wonder if I'll get a response?

Brendan1
24-09-2007, 02:14
Alan, you had much better reception than I did today. Not very good in this corner of the country.

Brendan1
25-09-2007, 02:11
Another not-so great log, sigh. :( Somewhat shorter than usual: I was doing some antenna testing with another receiver, and needed to disconnect my RX320.

Brendan1
26-09-2007, 02:36
This log covers CRI's broadcast only: had other priorities the rest of the daylight hours. Rocky start, good finish.

Brendan1
27-09-2007, 02:36
The afternoon log, two parts, to miss the off-air period at 2230Z. Slow improvement on this frequency. Nothing seen/heard during the morning transmission other than very faint waterfall traces, not enough to log. Needed to re-boot the 'puter, so the CRI segment is short about 36 minutes.

Brendan1
28-09-2007, 02:10
Much like yesterday: not very good first half, very good second half.

Alan Johnson
29-09-2007, 00:59

Here's a one-piece log for today's transmission. This actually seems slightly better than most days of late.

Brendan1
30-09-2007, 00:41
Terrible reception today - at least on 9800! I've shut down early because there was no longer anything visible on the waterfall, and the graph shows how difficult it's been this afternoon. Hopefully the RNW 9405 transmission won't be so bad. Solar conditions would appear to be less than stellar (pun intended).

Alan Johnson
30-09-2007, 00:59

Wow, had some serious deterioration on the band towards the end, which is why I cut it a little short. 9800 has been pretty steady for this broadcast (for me) of late, but this was some serious fading. No other DRM logs tonight, off to local ham club digital group to demo broadcast DRM, so setup is disabled.

Brendan1
20-10-2007, 02:23

Today's log is much the same, some good stretches, some bad. I'm not sure what began at 1730Z, but my noise floor went quite high, wiping out Sackville pretty good. No new interference sources were running around here, so I'm thinking it was somewhere close in the neighborhood. :(

Two fairly miserable logs.

Alan, I do think that Sackville has been varying their bitrates lately, although I don't think the 20.88 rate is entirely new. I would have to look back at my logs to see what they've been sending at before, but it does seem higher than other days of late.

Back to logging, now that I have the antenna outside and a setup problem fixed. Didn't really make the log any steadier, but the signal levels are up from previous forays. Let's just blame the bottom of the cycle.

For good measure, I've got two days, the 2nd and the 4th posted. The 2nd is a little truncated because of setup experiments and so on.

Brendan1
09-11-2007, 03:10
Two parts (again), the morning was quite variable in reception quality. The afternoon just shut down too early.

Brendan1
10-11-2007, 02:47
Some improvement today, at least for the afternoon log. The morning was fairly non-existent.

Brendan1
11-11-2007, 02:42
Some of the less nice propagation returned today, especially towards the end of the afternoon.

Brendan1
12-11-2007, 03:43
A so-so log today. Pretty good start, not-so-good ending.

Brendan1
14-11-2007, 06:39
Managed two logs yesterday, but today (the 14th) I may have none due to electrical work.

Both logs are pretty good, but you can easily see on the afternoon log when and where the band dropped out.

Good today - at least until my wife switched to her account on the computer. The perils of Vista!

Hi Everyone,

Here are several logs from the morning. Looks good.

I know, I know, this is now out of sequence, but I couldn't get into the forum last night at all and today we haven't had any power. All fixed now.

18-11-2007, 00:53
The band didn't last very long today. I didn't even try for TDP at 0000 hrs. :(

Hi Everyone,

Here are several logs from the morning and early afternoon. Later in the afternoon (~2230) (not posted) the interference from a station on 9795 really hurts decoding. Then, the QSB sets in, and it's downhill from there.

73,

Mark

Brendan1
19-11-2007, 02:27
Boy, after the break in transmission this broadcast went downhill, fast!

Hi Everyone,

This broadcast is holding up great in the morning.

73,

Mark

Brendan1
20-11-2007, 17:13
This broadcast has certainly gotten better the last week or so, and has turned into a great daytime catch. Today (20th) will be another story: geomagnetic storm/disturbance right now, and 9800 is coming in very poorly. :(

Brendan1
21-11-2007, 03:25
Dreadful day due to geomagnetic disturbances. Almost no up-time for this broadcast, which is in complete contrast to the last few days.

21-11-2007, 15:08
Hi Everyone,

Yes, definitely a more challenging day here also. I think my southern location (about 200 miles south of Brendan) must have helped a bit.

73,

Mark

Brendan1
22-11-2007, 17:43
Still suffering, but better than yesterday. This isn't an all day log, as I was doing some computer hardware work in the afternoon and wasn't able to do any radio work until much later.

Alan Johnson
22-11-2007, 23:02
Short session today - it will be interesting to see if propagation holds out until 0000 UTC.

Happy Thanksgiving to the U.S. DRM'ers.

Brendan1
23-11-2007, 06:32
Not so hot today. Still seeing some less than great propagation here.

Alan Johnson
24-11-2007, 00:43
The transmission held up pretty well for the entire time today.

Alan Johnson
25-11-2007, 00:00
Sunset approaches and the transmission fades.

Brendan1
25-11-2007, 17:16
I've noticed the same thing Alan: with the approach of the gray line it just goes away. Not a very good log from yesterday.

Brendan1
26-11-2007, 02:33
What a drop-off! That darkness/grayline issue hit over an hour before actual sunset here.

27-11-2007, 06:19
Hi Everyone,

This transmission was very good here for five hours this morning (local time).

Brendan1
27-11-2007, 17:30
Interesting to see the wave-like morning results, what with the very regular peaks and valleys. The afternoon was not so good...

Brendan1
28-11-2007, 02:22
Somewhat more timely posting tonight. Still not much improvement I'm afraid.

Brendan1
29-11-2007, 03:09
Last night's comments (see above) still apply. :(

Brendan1
30-11-2007, 02:36
No morning log today: nothing to log, with only the faintest of signal trace on the waterfall. The afternoon was only slightly better.

Brendan1
01-12-2007, 03:10
I logged the morning broadcasts today, still doing very poorly. The afternoon was only 'slightly adequate' for a total of around 90 minutes. :(

Brendan1
02-12-2007, 19:39
A better log than most of the last few days.

Brendan1
03-12-2007, 03:41
Much, much better reception today. The afternoon is still shutting down awfully early though, but before that it's doing well.

Brendan1
04-12-2007, 02:36
Not quite as good as yesterday, but still better than before.

Brendan1
05-12-2007, 00:55
New logging program today, DRMLogPlotter. A little more data-filled. Not a bad day either, although some adjacent QRM in the afternoon is not helping.

Brendan1
06-12-2007, 00:18
Hmmm, things started shutting down 2 full hours before local sunset. Not all that great an afternoon.

Brendan1
07-12-2007, 02:48
A better day today, and it didn't shut down as early.

Brendan1
10-12-2007, 02:52
A pretty good log today, not too bad at all.

Brendan1
11-12-2007, 00:25
Morning and afternoon segments today. The sun god is smiling on us: good propagation today for the most part, much improved reception.

Brendan1
12-12-2007, 17:41
Not so good for the afternoon yesterday; I really must sacrifice something to have it all come back, although today is looking better.

Brendan1
13-12-2007, 02:23
Fairly good for the most part this afternoon, but the band did close early again.

Brendan1
14-12-2007, 20:59
Yesterday's report: the morning was very good, but the afternoon was not so good, as propagation seems to be reverting to the low level it has been at for quite some time during those hours.

Brendan1
15-12-2007, 03:54
A little of this, a little of that. Today's logs just show that propagation is a fickle thing. Today the morning was just awful, and the afternoon extremely variable.

FritzWue
15-12-2007, 18:17
Testing my new Flex-5000A, not bad. :)
Strong AM interfrence from 5 kHz up between 17:35 and 18:00 UTC.

Brendan1
16-12-2007, 00:48
A chunk of this morning, and another chunk of the afternoon. Still not doing so well.

Brendan1
17-12-2007, 03:48
Most of the morning and all of the afternoon - the morning was excellent, in fact this is one of my all-time best logs for CBC in that time period.

Brendan1
18-12-2007, 03:05
Oh, the dizzying variety of DRM logging: from a good day yesterday to a not so good one today.

Brendan1
19-12-2007, 03:06
About the same as yesterday, with great variability all day.

Brendan1
20-12-2007, 02:37
Still showing a lot of propagation issues for both the morning and afternoon.

Brendan1
21-12-2007, 17:18
Extremely bad reception yesterday. Worst results - bar none - for this broadcast in quite some time.

Brendan1
22-12-2007, 03:07
Very low sunspot numbers are suppressing what little propagation there has been, and today was no exception.

Brendan1
23-12-2007, 02:20
Still not much luck with any of the 9800 broadcasts today.

I wish my report was as good as yours, Zyg! CBC is still quite problematic for the west coast.

Brendan1
25-12-2007, 03:07
An all-day log today. Still not doing very well. The graph does show how the propagation waxes and wanes very nicely.

Brendan1
26-12-2007, 02:08
Some signs of life in 31 meters: best signal strength in a few days. Still not much for actual listening though.

Brendan1
27-12-2007, 03:45
About the same as yesterday, with not a lot of decoding being done.

Brendan1
28-12-2007, 00:58
Only the afternoon I'm afraid, but the signal levels appear to be higher today.

Brendan1
29-12-2007, 03:14
Some signs of life today: a little more up-time, and generally higher signal strength most of the day.

Alan Johnson
29-12-2007, 23:51
Pretty good until about 2230 - then the band died. The drop-out at about 2130 was a result of my bumping the tuning knob.

Brendan1
30-12-2007, 02:16
I can't bump my tuning knob as I don't have one. Not that I haven't somehow 'clicked' on the wrong software button at times and had things go horribly wrong. :p

9800 is definitely looking up for me: higher SNR right now, which is a good thing. I'll take it.

Brendan1
30-12-2007, 23:56
This broadcast seems to be steadily getting better over the last few days. Perhaps the further we get away from the solstice on the 21st it will continue to improve?

Brendan1
03-01-2008, 16:57
Hi folks, took a bit of a break over the holiday, so I missed the 1st. Fairly mediocre results for the two logs here.

This afternoon's 9800 KHz reception.

First log 1505 to 1759 UTC
2nd log 1858 to 2259 UTC

Not sure if it's the conditions, the RX-320D, or my computer that is causing problems?

11-01-2008, 17:00
Very sporadic reception, but that is the norm right now.

Brendan1
13-01-2008, 02:33
Part of this morning, and all of the afternoon. Not very good for the most part.

AF4MP
14-01-2008, 02:44
There was no audio and no data on 9800KHz all day until 20:52UTC.

Brendan1
14-01-2008, 17:02
Not too good over here either. I did notice that the DRM encoder seemed to be stuck, as the MSC and SDC constellations were locked up, and only the FAC was actually changing. Not the first time this has happened with Sackville I'm afraid.

I'm jealous, Zyg. Our two logs show the disparity of the two coasts when it comes to DRM reception.

Brendan1
16-01-2008, 17:00
Yesterday's log shows some improvement in the afternoon.

Brendan1
17-01-2008, 03:04
A nice shift: there is now receivable signal for much of the broadcast period, and this would make a nice change if the trend continues.

Brendan1
18-01-2008, 03:10
About like yesterday's log, no big change either up or down. There did seem to be a late start, as there was no signal visible for some time. There is usually a trace on the waterfall, and this time there was nothing.

Would that reception here on the west coast could be so good...

20-01-2008, 06:24

28-01-2008, 00:40
The morning log is pretty flat, as in nothing. The afternoon was a delight, with a good signal most of the time. Thirty-one meters is coming back to life!

I must add a caveat however: at 1741Z I changed the batteries for my loop antenna, and that is when the signal takes a notable upward swing. Maybe I should have changed them before this...
