Thumbs up - solid through to the last 8 minutes on the little vertical. The G5RV was solid for almost the first 3 hours.

Not so good but surprising... the vertical J-Pole outperformed the horizontal G5RV for most of the hour. Longest acceptable period - 1st 20 minutes at 99.8%.

Hi,
a lot of interference from above and below. No audio decoded as a result.
Roland
Near perfect reception on the 2m J-Pole and no-AGC DX-394A for 3 hours! A lot worse with the 104' G5RV and DX-394B with AGC.

First use of DReaM 1.1.4c - the graphic logging of various parameters is great! Here's a slice from the above logging period that effectively shows how the guard band violations were pretty common off the G5RV antenna - lower histogram always crowding the 5.31ms maximum allowed. The upper histogram shows the delay off the 2m J-Pole, well below the max most of the time.
The period must cover 21:53-22:08 UTC based on the 5:08 PM EST system time. It would be useful for screen shots if the DReaM display included the current date/time. And even more useful if there was a written log for longer period graphing and analysis.

Such a written log already exists.
Have a look at your DreamLogLong.csv file in your Dream folder. There also exists an Excel macro to read it out, see 'Auxiliaries' on the Dream homepage http://drm.sourceforge.net/ . I don't know anything about this macro, since I have not tried it, because I do not have Excel installed.

Not so good as 9800. Rx 1 was switched from the vertical to the same ant as Rx2, the G5RV, at 00:17. Longest acceptable audio decoding, 99.8% for 22 min as marked.

I must say that I'm disappointed that the CRI rebroadcast is gone. When I started short wave listening in the early 60's, CRI's ancestor, Radio Peking, was lambasting the capitalist running dogs. What a difference listening to CRI - all the talk about market economies, supply and demand, profit and loss, automobiles and houses - it's incredible how the PRC has embraced capitalism in its own way. CRI has some very enjoyable presenters and commentators. I'll miss their DRM casts.

Hi Tom,
and they also had this nice interval signal, which sounded like real DX.
Want to hear it again? I have found this link (http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~RP4N-KWMR/bcl/sound/peking.ram) (requires Real Player though).

Shortly after uploading my report for CBC on 6010 I tuned to 6080 and found CBC transmiting on that frequency. That`s strange, because the DRM text message indicates this, 9800kHz 20:55-23:59 UTC **6010kHz 00:00-00:59 UTC ** 6140kHz 01:00-01:59 UTC ** 6010kHz 04:00-04:59 UTC to North-East USA. Here's a chart from DreamLogLong - don't think it reveals a lot more except that the delay was frequently close to violating the guard band interval.

Off to a good start but then swamped with co-channel and adjacent channel interference from 1:15 to end of transmission. Tried with MLC=4 and BPF on, latest DReaM 1.1.4c.
73, Tom
In spite of strong signal, the SNR is running down into the few dB range, sometimes even losing sync, rarely getting audio. Tuned to 9770 kHz AM from RCI, presumably from Sackville, and to other stations in thesame band and noted fast, fluttery fading. Using DReaM in USB mode, this ECSS mode reception is quite decent. The fading distortions much reduced relative to DSB AM demodulation. Another testament to the robustness and tolerance of analog modulation to transmission channel distortions and to its advantage over digital. Of course, there are no labels, text messages, pictures, etc. But, it works.
Can't tell from the DReaM evaluation what the cause of the problem is - no sign of interfering carriers, only great fluctuations in the Estimated Channel Impulse Response delay. Perhaps the most notable symptom of the fluttery fading is the Estimated Channel Transfer Response - the amplitude-frequency curve is jumping all over and the group delay shows lots of ripple and is likewise bouncing all over.

Awful continued - got some intermittent decoding. Flutter fading continues on SW-AM transmissions. None of the later Sackville DRM transmissions have been decodable, not even evident on the spectrum display.

We are sorry to hear that the TDPradio broadcast was in mono. We will have to talk to the people in Sackville to find out why.
Strange also that audio quality was not so good. The original source looks OK. Could it be because of the missing stereo? Was SBR activated?
And was the TDPradio test message present?

Ludo,
I think this will answer your questions, except for the audio having too much midrange.
Ludo, although the transmission was not is stereo that should have no effect on the midrange being boosted. If you are fimilar with analogue SCPC received direct from a satellite without processing, that`s what it sounded like.
Here is a shot of the spectrum scope.
Carl
Here's my log covering part of TDPradio and all of NASB. I was not monitoring in stereo and was occupied elsewhere much of the time so can't comment on Carl's observations. What little I did hear of TDPradio sounded normal for the type of music but, since the instruments are not natural and the music unfamiliar, it's hard to say anything about the tonal quality.
Propagation here was poor - weak signal, much of the time below S3, large swings in strength, and the vertical uncharacteristically did not outperform the horizontal antenna.

I will also upload it in the wwwroot directory for you to check out. I know you know what good audio quality is. I also know that you want the program material from TDPradio to sound it`s best, regardless what the program material is. I do not believe the quality of todays transmission had any problem when it left TDPradio. I believe the problem with the audio in todays transmission originated in Sackville. In the future, if the audio quality of your broadcasts are not up to high standards, transmitted via Sackville, I will post it and you will get a copy of it as well.

Hey Sackville,
I am requsting that you reduce the bitrate to about half of what you have been using. We are receiving too many dropouts on these two frequencies 6010 and 6080. You don`t need this high of a bit rate for voice. Use bitrates this high for good quality music. For example TDPradio on 11900. Bring it down to about 11 or 12 kbs for these two frequencies. How about this, MODE B, 64 QAM WITH SBR at a rate of 13 KBS. Think about it.
Carl
Transmission started late at 00:11. Longest sustained audio (99.6%) 16 minutes at 00:18.
73, Tom
13 minutes at 99.9% off the top then somewhat more variable for 99.2% overall.
Hi Carl, I agree that 6010 and 6080 are rarely as good here as 6140 was through the previous season although tonight was not too bad with one of my radios. High reliability listening has got to be the objective - if dropping the bit rate will do it, bring it down!

I think all of the DRM broadcasters should make adjustments to the DRM transmissions before going on the air, to flow with propagation conditions if possible. I know that dropping the bitrate will do it. The point is, will they do it.

Tom,
You are correct on the co-channel carrier. It is from Radio Havana Cuba. They have a fairly powerful signal through here occasionally.
Carl
RHC is at 6000, the 2nd lower adjacent channel of 6010. The co-channel interferer (carrier at 6010) is from somewhere else. But I do find that RHC sideband splatters above 6005 kHz so when they are really strong (or Sackville is weak) they can cause a problem.

1st hr again probably pretty good - the major dropouts were due to conflicting computer ops. After 23:00, propagation worsened - also some interaction sharing antenna with two radios.

#2- 2m J-Pole then G5RV into DX-394A, 10 kHz bw and downconverter

Late start log. Good results. Not sure but dropout of audio at 00:50 does not look like propagation - SNR stayed up. Possibly computer op. Both radios on G5RV.

The decoded audio level was higher from Bonaire by a few dB but did not sound like it was being crushed - I think Sackville has excessive headroom or the program feed level was low.

Hi all,
good results in the last 20min of NASBīs broadcast, great show especially the interview with Jeff White giving information on the HFCC conference and the DRM symposium in Mexico lately.
I think part of the audio problem was that once again they came back after a short break with the settings for TDP (p-stereo) and that stayed for the whole transmission, including label and text messages.
Anyway, I really enjoyed it and would like to hear similar programs on DRM in Europe!

Radio Vatican receivable here for a few minutes with good rf signal and bad audio source quality until China Radio switched on.
Just got my system up and running over the weekend, so I'm new to the forum but interested in DRM and what it holds for the future.
I'm wondering if I'm the closest person on the forum to Sackville? I'm only about 900km away, and because of that I think I have some special concerns about the 9800kHz frequency during the Sackville DRM transmission, given the local sunset in the middle of the transmission.
Also, even though the signal is pretty good early on (right now at 2200UT, it's about 12dB SNR and was closer to 15dB 30 minutes ago), I have very sporadic audio. Remember I'm new, but other broadcasters have much lower signals here and I'm able to get audio more than I can from Sackville- do they have a problem with modulation?

Hi,
I donīt think there is a problem at Sackville, the reason you get more audio decoded on other transmissions is probably because they are using other coderates, meaning a lower SNR is required for decoding. With the current configuration you need more than 20 dB from Sackville.
As you say the signal from Sackville is strong but SNR is low, have a look at DReaMīs SNR plot and check for interferers.

Seems like they are testing right now (1630z) on 9800kHz.
I had a few snips of music. 12-15 SNR but little audio.
Interesting- DRM version of "dead air" right now (2142UTC). 24.2 SNR, no audio coming out of the PC, although DReaM says there should be. Very strange! Good strong sig and good decoding, so perhaps they're testing as you say...
Yes I checked to see if the speakers were on! ;)

Audio is back- as of 22:03 UTC.
Hard to believe NE USA is the target! Here's tonight's results.

Here are the "out West" results
Wow! The audio was stellar today. Did they change settings somewhere?
Music (in mono) on a cooking show during the Radio Sweden bit really blew me away! The cooking show iteself sounded great too!
Let's hear it for trying stereo :)
Going to let the software keep logging tonight (no decodable audio as usual), but while I WAS decoding audio at 2130 or so, during what should have been Radio Netherlands' half-hour, there was no programming on-air... just some "dead air" hiss.
Someone fell asleep at the switch?
OK, here is tonight's 9800 log in the target eastern NAm. The 31 meter band does interesting things, since 9800 seems usable here before sunset, but as sunset occurs the frequency becomes unusable until both the transmitter and I are in full darkness, a dead period of an hour and a half or so. It's been shifting as the daylight hours (and daylight savings time) have shifted.
As I posted, the RN broadcast around 2130 was dead air during the couple succesful decodes.

Started listening at 2300Z with 100% decode and 17-21 dB S/N. Propagation declined enough that the R. Sweden feed dropped out at 2347Z with a S/N less than 8 dB.
Stayed on frequency until about 0015Z, but it didn't come back up.
Maybe I'll get home from work early enough today to give a listen to RNW from Bonaire, which was excellent last time I heard it.
Very strange reception tonight- exactly at 2130, the SNR dropped tremendously- from 2200 to 2400 no decodable audio at all, then just before 0100 the BBC came booming in...
I know there was some slight co-channel interference from around 00(24)00, but not really noticeable at 2200.
Can't explain the degradation at 2200- unless CBC is doing something...

I'm wondering if I'm the closest person on the forum to Sackville? I'm only about 900km away, and because of that I think I have some special concerns about the 9800kHz frequency during the Sackville DRM transmission, given the local sunset in the middle of the transmission.
You are a tad closer than I. I don't have my system functioning at this time and the G5RV is kind of screwed up anyway so I cannot compare directly. I filed a number of reports last year. In spite of being right on the beam, the short distance seems to result often in a very smeared impulse response. The 2-hop and multi-hop paths are often as strong or stronger than the single hop. The calculated DRM SNR suffers as a result.

Last night (27/28 December UTC) was great reception- I'm guessing because there were geomagnetic storm conditions that kept interference down for the CBC Sackville site- here are tonight (28/28 December) conditions which are again horrible- with interference on 9790 that will not allow reception of DRM here.

I turned on the radio just after 2300 UTC 25 March 06 to listen to 9800 kHz from Sackville - somebody forgot to set the playback speed correctly - are they still using tape recorders?

Hi all,
not bad considering the higher bitrate than on the NAB transmissions
Simone
Hi all,
rather good results last night

Hi all,
great results last night

.. and again last night

Not enough audio to be able to follow the programme content. There seemed to be a problem with a too low audio volume during part of the Radio Sweden programme.
SNR was often just a bit below what would have been required for audio, a little more signal would have helped.

Hello to all,
Really good audio quality during the short time I could listen to. Programme about the policy of diversity on Swedish national radio, and an extract of the french song 'Zobi la mouche' :-)

Hi all,
A pretty good result tonight.
John.
This evening's report (and computer decoding problem fixed)...
The transmitter was started earlier then scheduled.
RCI and DW on 9800 kHz:
22160
Oh, I really got DRM from Canada  :D :D :D
RCI (CBC) reception on 9800 KHz this afternoon/evening. There were thunderstorms in the receiving area during the transmission, particularly the start.
Today's reception report.
The last four blips on the audio plot do not appear to be random and are probably due to my computer  (which will be investigated).

Today's reception report (until 22:00).

Pretty typical reception for me - nothing at first, and then a fair bit towards the end...
Today's reception report (until 22:00).
