Colombo

Hello to all DRM´s,

during my last holiday in Germany:

Just like to inform you that I have build up the Elektor DRM RX,
powered by 9V batt. in conjunction with my new hp pavilion notebook and the car radio aerial. Running FhG SWR and DREAM.

Did a trip on May 9th from Attendorn to Frankfurt Airport
on A45 abt. 175 KM.

Received without dropouts:

RTL on 6095 khz
DW-Sines on 15440 khz

Quite impressive for me, since the signals at my home in
Colombo
are hardly good enough to detect properly.

Happy DRM !

Hi Simome,

I'm wondering if there is really noticeable difference between mobile and stationary reception (besides of the fact that the used antenna is probably much smaller).

I can imagine that the Doppler effect will be a little bit more involved but I think that the ionosphere layers are moving up and down much faster that you ever can drive, even on the German highways ;-)

So my question is, are you doing those test to see the Doppler differences or to test the equipment?

Hi all,
here are my results of 3hours driving East mostly on highways during the 3 hours of transmission yesterday, (coordinates are those at the end), good results, except during 2 heavy thunderstorms, see attachment

@Guido: Besides testing and improving of the equipment, it is to get some experience of what has an impact on reception and to see which frequencies work or do not work in different areas. Also sometimes it is just for listening :)

good results last night, starting in Austria (near Bregenz), end of the 4 hours transmission was near Aschaffenburg. The dropouts occured in tunnels or under long bridges at highway crossings.

My first mobile test. :D
The faster drive the more noise I have, even if I let the engine idle.
Maybe noise from the tires?

...and power lines are no good, electric fences are no good, some cars are no good, driving through under bridges is not bad....
...just learning.

Hi Fritz,

I had similar problems in my car, they seem to come from the speed measuring device (connected to the carradio in order to adjust the volume according to the cruise speed). Unfortunately I had no time to do further investigations.

Hi Michel,

thanks for the info, I will try to find out how to check this.
I am using a notebook, the DRT1, and an audio amplifier from a separate 12V supply directly connected to the battery.
The antenna amplifier is fed via coax from the DRT1 and grounded directly at the rear end of the roof, so this should be rather decoupled from anything having to do with the car radio.
I hope the tires themselves on the road do not cause this noise. I was listening to 13MHz in the evening, signal was not very strong at that time.

Hi,

my general experiences with mobile DRM reception are mostly very good, especially on shortwave. Beside eliminating any EM-noise from the car, the antenna and it's adaptation to the receiver input is the important key factor.

Good luck with your experiments !

Regards,

Michel

"Beside eliminating any EM-noise from the car, the antenna and it's adaptation to the receiver input is the important key factor."

Hi Michel,
that's very true! I had to do some modifications on my antenna amplifier against a 50Hz problem, and it seems to work ok now.
Here is a short log, BBC WS on 1296kHz, just a trip into town and back.
The dropouts occur at the same places where i have problems with a.m. too, at the jeweller's store, the gaming hall, etc.
After all, it's still just mediumwave. ;)

Today, I made my first mobile DRM test. Original I just wanted to do a quick stationary DRM check far outside the city noise, but because it was raining the whole day, I decided to hang the Degen DE31 loop into the car and try mobile DRM reception during my next trip. I just used a notebook, the DWT and the DE31 loop inside the car with a TDI engine.

http://home.arcor.de/carsten.knuetter/Mobil_drm1.jpg
http://home.arcor.de/carsten.knuetter/Mobil_drm2.jpg

I could not notice any noise from the car when I started the engine, so I decided to drive with RTL Radio on 6095 kHz. My trip was from Fulda to Neustadt(Hessen) about 75 km on Highways and country roads in a quite hilly area with lots of forest.

http://home.arcor.de/carsten.knuetter/Mobile2.jpg

The result is amazing, nearly perfect the whole 90 minutes. Electricity lines and normal bridges had no effect on reception. The only bigger dropout occured while driving into a small tunnel, maybe 100-200m long and one side partly open. Once I did a short break in between a couple of wind generators, with no effect on reception. Also driving through the small cities of Alsfeld and Neustadt and lots of small villages had no noticable effect on reception.

The small dropouts were caused by deep fading of the signal. In these times, 6085 was much stronger than 6095. Maybe a problem, because the filter of the DWT is much too wide and the agc react on the neighbour channel. But these dropouts were hardly noticable and had nothing to do with driving, because I noticed that also on a parking place.

I'm really impressed by mobile DRM reception. On FM you have lots of interferences, hiss, crackle noises in that area.

On my way back, I must change back to FM, because the notebook battery was low. DRM recption was much better!

Hi all,

perfect!!! - better than FM-Radio with RDS!!!!!! The laptop was powered by its own rechargable batteries, the DRT1 via USB from the laptop - no galvanic coupling to the car. Logging and listening stoped when the batteries were empty - not by conditions or distance! The antenna only a 1 m whip with a 1:9 transformer.
Distance to TX from 450 km to approx 650? km. During driving
back the next day I tried B5akt on 6085 - it was not worth listening and logging! I presume the carrier in the center has a very negative effect!!!!

Hi all,

here the logs from 1 week in Czech Repulbic, 300 km east from my home QTH
(close to Polish Boarder). Generally the signals are much weaker than at home - exept BR5akt and DW Wertachtal from South Germany. Most drop outs during driving resulted from high voltage power lines crossing the street.
