View Full Version : DW Sines 15440 kHz
Hi all,
Here is the first report of my new home made receiver. The receiver has AD8099 amplifier, AD9951 DDS, AD831 mixer. Antenna is a 5 meter long oudoor wire.

Hi DRMs,
here are my 6 hour logfile from Sines on 15440 kHz. Quite stable signal, a short break at 1200.
Indoor reception with modified Sony SW 1.

Hi!
Stable and good as usual.
8:00 - 8:59 UTC 100%

Strong and stable signal also here (Average SNR of 31 dB). Audio dropouts probably due to local effects (too high input level to sound device)

Daniel
Hi,
Strong signal most of the time, but there was also interference from a carrier on the center frequency. See insert.
Time: 08:30 - 10:22 UTC.
Result: CDA 89%.
Hi all,
Dream is a bit too optimistic with this graph. It looks perfect, but it wasn't. Between 9:00 and 11:00 UTC I heard several dropouts caused by interference on 15440 kHz from CRI, which cannot be seen in the graph. This interfernce is known since 2 years now and still nothing happens.
Hi all,
no problems with the usual co channel interference this morning as the signal was pretty strong, see attachment

Very bad beginning this morning. I hardly can remember such low levels from Sines. Before 8:15 there was no signal from Sines here at all. First I thought that there was a TX problem, but then the signal slightly increased to it's normal strong level.
Hi all,
again a weak start from Sines this morning, see attachment

Hi,
signal these days is by far not as strong as it used to be some weeks ago but this is perhaps a result of summer conditions.

Good reception with a much better audio quality than others despite the low bitrate.

Perfect.
I wonder what caused these two dropouts? I think it was the powermangement of my notebook.
Hi all,
find attached my log from this morning. In the graph there are 2 SNR curves. The reference (red) is my standard equipment (FT757GX with dipole antenna). As i have currently a DWT for testing i used the DWT with its 5 m wire supplied (just thrown the wire outside the window). The green SNR curve is the result. Tommorrow i will test both, using the same antenna.
73, Daniel
@carknue: Hi Carsten, currently i am using for parallel monitoring also a laptop. As soon as the power management is turned on (even only for the display), Dream SW freezes sometimes, when the display is switched off. I switched all power management options off, no more problems.
BTW: I am using XP Prof + SP2
@dk8cb: 2nd audio added ;-)

Hi,
but where did you put the yellow graph showing correctly decoded audio on the DWT?
Roland
Hmm, I disabled display switching off, but the problem seems to be the dynamic CPU switching. Dream has a much higher CPU load than DRMSWR, so I need different tresholds for the DRMSWR. Does someone know a tool for fixing the Centrino CPU speed to 0.8 Ghz? I have only a tool for 0.6 and 1.6 GHz or dynamic switching.
Hi all,
find attached todays result, using the DWT with my dipole antenna. Much better than yesterday using the 5 m wire antenna.
For comparison i added the result from yesterday (green/yellow).

Hi,
Dream version 1.2.4 has better bandpass filter than version 1.2.2.
Version changes reads:
" improved bandpass filter for receiver -> better interfere rejection
BUT: under normal conditions, this filter will degrade the performance a little bit since it attenuates the OFDM carriers at the borders a bit"
I was running two Dreams, version 1.2.4, the first bandpass filter OFF the second bandpass filter ON. The differency was only 0.1% during 261 minutes.
73, Seppo

The improvement depends very much upon the sort of interference encountered. The improved bandpass filter is especially effective in case of interference signals that occur at the edges of the DRM spectrum.
Roland
Hi Roland,
Yes, I agree, bandpass filter is a very good option.
I wanted to know how much bandbass filter degrade the performance. I have noticed that edges of the DRM spectrum are also filtered a little. My test above shows that the filter can be ON always, as it in good conditions degrades only 0.1 %
73, Seppo

Hi Seppo, now I understand your intentions.
The filter may always be on if CPU-load and power consumption don't play a role.
It also still has to be investigated whether the filter will perhaps have a negative effect in the presence of broadband noise pulses which might be stretched by the filter's response.
Roland
Very good until another station came on 3 minutes before the end of transmission.
Signal was weaker than usual at the beginning of my logging period but became strong towards the end.

Roland
Hi,

Seppo
Not a very strong signal but perfect reception.
Roland
Hi,
at about 0923UTC today, there were three short interruptions of the DRM signal which obviously were TX or data stream related.
Just before it, signal strength had fallen to a much lower level than before but this may just be related to propagation conditions.
See attached waterfall plot for a recording of the interruptions in the DRM data stream.
Could an airplane have crossed the line between the satellite and Sines' satellite dish?
Roland
Hi,
and here is my report.
Roland
Hi all,
I was testing again Sony ICF-2001D radio and my "home made" DRM-radio. At the same input level -60 dBm Sony has second order distance of IM -30 dB and my DRM-radio has -55 dB. The maximum SNR with Sony is 28 dB and DDS-DRM has 51 dB. Also I calculated DDS-DRM mixer IP3 18dBm. (1 dB mixer compression Point = +8 dBm --> IP3 = 10+8 dBm)
DDS-DRM-RX has much better specs than Sony but the result is almost the same. Strong field as this 15440 kHz results 100% both, weaker signal 18-19 dB SNR, like 7265kHz today, has the differency only 3%

Roland
Hi,
signal was strong today.
During the dropout, Sines transmitted in AM for a short time, then there was only a carrier and it looked a bit like the TX was being retuned.
Roland
Hi Roland
You listen in AM because in this transmitter we have an old DRM encoder. So the transmitter need tune first after shuttdown and at the moment the audio source from sattelite was conected. This is above 30 seconds of carrier transmission, and next shutdown and start again in DRM mode, with all the automatic tuning system stoped.
This happen, when we change the antenna, or need make other operation like maintenance. In this transmission, we had change the transmitter because the normal transmitter that send in 15440 MHz was in maintenance.
Hi,
there was occasional on-channel interference.
During moments of fading, a carrier was visible on 15440 kHz.
Roland
Hi,

Hi Michael,
this is most likely a problem of the receiver or one of home-made interference.
To improve it (in case of home-made interference):
- put an RF choke (ferrite toroid core) into the audio cable from RX to PC, preferably on both sides.
- prevent coupling from the mains into your receiver (again using a toroid choke).
- if you are using a "Wall wart" power supply, make sure, its rectifier diodes are bypassed for RF by 10 nF capacitors.
- have a look at this old thread

Two large interruptions; 09 and 10 UTC!

voices on this stereo transmission sounded perfect, quite unlike on DW stereo transmissions from Taldom. I have posted comments on Taldom's voice stereo quality several times but no one seems to want to comment. Do a lot of people listen on crappy PC speakers where one just doesn't notice?
Reception was perfect until shortly before the end of transmission, when a much stronger arabic station appeared on 15435 and killed everything.

Hi,
A strange thing happened today at 08:56 UTC. Sines was very strong, max. SNR 37.7 dB but suddenly a very strong 15443kHz carrier wave killed DRM completely. The other signal was fading 10 to 30 dB over the Sines transmission. I just don't understand where it came from. I was not able to find any image or harmonic frequencies of my receiver suitable to this carrier wave, so I think it was really very a strong 15443 kHz carrier. Did anybody else noticed this interference?

This is a result after my last ones about 5 months ago, when I stopped logging on this frequency due to bad reception caused by weak signals and interference problems.

Hi,
Either the conditions went haywire or some carrier is present on this QRG after 0900 UTC? Usually this frequency offers super DRM reception...

very bad audio quality with 11,6 kbps.

I also noticed very low bitrates on all DW frequencies this morning. If this will continue, I surely will not buy a DRM Radio. I think that even 17.4kbps p-stereo sounds not really good enough for a programme with high part of music like DW digital. Should be around 20kbps p-stereo or 17.4 kbps mono.

In acordance with the new schedule Sines will be on the air in 15.440KHz from 08:00 to11:57, and from 12:00 to 13:00. All UTC of course.

Yes is correct. I was post the information wrong. Sorry!
Efectivelly the 15.440KHz are from 8:00 to 13:59.:D
Hi all,
just a short report of 14.56 kbps bitrate mono audio. The audio quality was surprisingly good, definately much better than AM. The audio band was up to 5 kHz. My opinion is that this kind of audio quality is good enough for the short wave reception. I prefere a 100% decoded audio with lower quality better to a 89% decoded high quality stereo audio. If the decoded audio is less than 90 % I normally stop listening.

Hmm, its a little bit of-topic, but i think it would be a good idea to place some internet-controlled receivers in the target areas and change the bitrates comparing to the live-reception results of the test-receivers automatically. so everyone could get a good realiabilty and the best sound quality for a given daily propagation.
Are there plans to do something like that?

Such a system has already been used, it is known by the name of QoSAM (Quality of Service - AM). Have a look at this website (http://www.ist-qosam.com/start.htm). However, a signal may be received well at one location and bad at another or there may be interference at one place and a free channel at another.

oh, yes. now i remember! but what have been the results? Did it work?and when, why isn't it used?
Sure i know there are more problems at shortwave than propergation. indeed in my opinion co-channel interference is the biggest problem of the drm-system. but thats another thing which you can only solve by using another frequency or - what i think would be better - drm only frequencies, like many dxer's want in order to lower drm-qrm on the analog bands. But that would be an itu issue.

Hi all,
DW were broadcasting text messages in several languages, here is an example with the Arabic characters using DReaM, looked nice although I have no idea if it is correct or not ;)

Hi,
Good results especially at the end of the reception despite lower audio quality during the music programme, but nice anyway... Slide show received 15 times between 11:00 and 12:10 UT. Logged with laptop connected to AC adaptor.

SNR was less than 15dB.

Hi all.
Now is my best log her.
85 min and 99% CDA ok.
Antenna is now on the table on:) my altan.
Hi,
An hour plus with perfect reception.

Perfect, but why is this break? Bitrate after the break is not changed.
When should this transmission start? It is scheduled for 8 UTC, but not this morning:confused: There was a weak signal between 10 and 11 UTC.
Hi Carsten
this transmission is on air between 9:00 and 11:57 UTC. The propagation is the major problem. In the last month I had discovered a day with a ZERO SSN. So, no storm from sun but also no black spots in the sun, and no propagation. During the last 15 or 20 days MUF was realy lower than normal, and only a few hours a day are close to 15MHz. Normaly is around 7/9 MHz at night hours. In the last days, across the SW band I only listen a few and weak broadcasting stations in lower frequency segments. Also in Ham bands , in 14 MHz around 12:00 to 15:00 UTC we can listen stations , but normally from USA. Nothing from Europe.
Hi Carlos and all,
A very good day today except for a sudden drop in the signal strength around 1000 UTC ± 10 minutes. See plot for further comments.
Terje
Hi Carlos and all,
Very strange thing happend yesterday. After the usual 5 min break, the signal strength was 15 dB lower, but no change in SNR:confused:.
Carlos, what is changed after this break at 11:55 UTC? Transmitter change?
No change today.
Hi,
Very weak with co-channel AM QRM inthe beginning, then good until about 1050 UTC, when the signal got weaker again, with AM on the same QRG.
Terje
Hi Carsten
I was not in the station in this hour, because, this week I´m working from 16:00 to 24:00, but I today I was asked about this and the drop in the signal was caused by antenna change, from a courtain antenna to a log periodic vertical polarized antenna, because the workers that are assembling the new courtain for 4 MHz band, was closed to the courtain antenna that normaly running 15440 KHz.
But the propagation is also so bad. Today, I my yaesu FT1000MP MKV worked like no antenna conected!...No signals, no noise, nothing...A strange silence along all Ham bands. One Ham station was arrived on 7085 KHz from North Spain strangely strong, (45 dBuV) runing 1 KW. I called this station EA1PL, and make a bilateral contact with a strong signal. ( I run also a Kw). But the starnge is no more stations I can heard in SW band...
We are realy in "zero ground" of 11 years cycle. For almost the entire month of February 2006 the sun was utterly blank. If Galileo had looked at the sun on his 442nd birthday, he would have been disappointed—no sunspots, no spin, no discovery.:(
Looks what says SpaceWeather about the propagation:
What's going on? NASA solar physicist David Hathaway explains: "Solar minimum has arrived."
Sunspots come and go with an 11-year rhythm called the sunspot cycle. At the cycle's peak, solar maximum, the sun is continually peppered with spots, some as big as the planet Jupiter. But for every peak there is a valley, and during solar minimum months can go by without a single sunspot.
"That's where we are now—at minimum," says Hathaway.
Actually, we're at the beginning of the minimum. February 2006 was the first month in almost ten years with mostly no sunspots. For 21 of February's 28 days, the sun was blank. Hathaway expects this situation to continue for the rest of 2006:(
Have a nice weekend.
Hi,
Well, I believe it's the propagation that is "playing". Or what caused the drops between 10:31-10:50. But what happend at 11:58?
Nice otherwise with the stereo signal. Listening time: 09:55 - 12:21 UTC. Result: 75.5% CDA
Hi all,
pretty good results for an hour today
Simone
Quite weak this morning, but OK after 30 minutes.
Hi,
China Radio International came on just before 09 UTC, but its signal was not so strong (for a change :D ), but enough to interfere. Otherwise good reception all through.

hi all,
The signal of DW 15440KHZ was docorded good in Japan.
I received DW at 12HRS first time.
Strong signal, good reception, much better reception than on 15265 kHz which suffered heavily from a strong on-channel carrier when I checked at 13:30 UTC.

Strong and stable signal here. Perfect, I would say.
Higher SNR on all DRM stations after some more work on my FRG 7700.

hi all,
The signal was good decord today.
I guess after 1hr it will be better than this.
Thanks 73s
DE JA2QDX M.Ito
Hi,
The conditions were good today too. The improved SNR is credited to running the FRG 7700 on an external DC Supply instead from its built-in 230 VAC transformer and rectifier. Up to 5 dB better SNR than previous logs.
Terje
Hi,
A bit jumpy today, but on average very good. CDA was almost perfect, Fading probably was the cause of the variation in SNR.
Terje
Hi,
Very interesting! A very weak signal, just after 09 UT the S-meter went down to S0 - S1. S1 is approx. +6 dBµV into the antenna terminal. The Channel Impulse Response remained very distinct, and there was decoded audio even with periods of S0. I believe the reason for the weak signals was the C9.7 solar flare at 08 UT
An hour long log with some comments is enclosed.
