Dear Kiwi Owen,
please see how the FRG-8800 was modified as can be seen from the Documents section of our Main site. They have tried to pick up the 455KHz IF from the common point before set of filters, by using a broader bandwidth filter.
Like wise here also we have to tap the similar point. A tentative approach is here.
