View Full Version : RNZI 9890 kHz
Hi All
I actually managed to listen to NZ's own DRM signal today :D
Normally RNZI's signals are undecodable here in Wellington.
Cheers, Chris
Hi all.
Very good signal from RNZI this morning. Log is 55min. and CDA 99% ok.
Strong and stabil signal from my home made BBA20 brodband antenna .
:) :)
Hi all.
Very strong signal strength, cannel free from QRM.
Log 1 . 0900-1100UTC
Log 2. 1100-1200UTC
:)
Hi,
Not at all like that in Switzerland. Hampered as usual from a weak signal in the beginning, CZ started +10 kHz at 11-1130 UTC roughly. 20 minutes of some kind of listening was possible...
Terje
I noticed they use 9890 kHz for the 1100 - 1300 UTC period now. EEP coding scheme is also replaced with UEP, but I didn't find the distinctive hierarchy data structure in the log file. Did I miss something?
BTW: the drop out during 1155-1200 UTC is due to household electric device interference.
Hi all.
Her is log of 60min. very good signal. 1200UTC start strong AM on 9890 and 9895Khz .
Hi,
I logged from 0702 UTC, but cut the log short as there was absolutely nothing to hear until 1150 UTC. The last hour was not bad despite carriers -5 kHz, on channel and +5 kHz towards the end of the transmission.

Virtually all of the broadcast for my overnight period. Rather a lot of downtime, but since I was sleeping, I don't know what was causing the fairly large drops in overall signal quality. Most likely adjacent analog stations.
Hi.
Good signal strength today . no QRM from NL.So log 65min. to end of transmission.

There are some fairly big dropouts on this broadcast - I haven't the faintest idea what caused them.

Very much in and out tonight. Not a lot of reliability on the circuit between my QTH and NZ. Dream was "stuck," so I had to terminate the log early.
Hi all.
Good signal strength today ,but only to 1200UTC ,now start strong AM station on 9885 and 9895Khz.
:)
Hi,
Today's contribution. Towards the end of the transmission the signal was hampered from co- and adjacent AM channels.
Amazing results for me (keep in mind the antenna used in this case is indoor!).
Co- and on-channel interference as described by Sixten becomes stronger and stronger during the last hour.
Seems I started my log too late, as best results were right in the beginning.
Hi,
Today was not very good in Switzerland.
Hi all.
Very good from my start 1010UTC to 1135UTC , now start AM on 9890Khz.
Hi all.
Today was very strong AURORA so DRM signal was very poor , signal stringth S9+10db but only CDA 50% sound .
Hi,
Today there was no QRM, but the signal was not very strong. Got about an hour of good listening.
Hi all
Very good for me with RX320D
Hi all.
Propagation Today very good ,now strong and stabile signal under 100min. but 1100UTC start AM on 9890Khz and 9885Khz , now stop for DRM .
:)
Hi,
A 21 minute log, which at the top of the hour; 09:00, produced good audio. RNZI got lost in AM QRM from + 5 kHz at 09:15.
Brendan1
26-11-2006, 13:03
Here's the whole thing: I've noted a strong AM broadcast on 9885 that severely effected reception for a certain period. Otherwise, it was pretty good while I was awake during the last 90 minutes or so.
Hi
A sad result because of Dutch splatter +5 kHz all the time.
Brendan1
27-11-2006, 13:04
Not too bad for an overnight broadcast. Only bad thing is that pesky AM transmission...
Hi,
Surprisingly much decoded audio after the usual gradually increasing of the signal in the beginning. When it gets really interesting, the Czech station punches a half hour hole in the reception
Amazing good results today. Nearly 2 hrs of uninterrupted listening!
Peak SNR displayed on the screen (which however is not stored in the log??) was 26 dB SNR.
Hi,
The usual pattern today also. Not as good as yesterday.
Brendan1
28-11-2006, 13:03
Not "un"-interrupted today, for me at least. The last hour was mostly due to a rise in noise levels and a drop in propagation. The big gap in the wee hours? I have no idea, other than that it might have been a competing, adjacent AM transmission from somewhere...
Hi all.
Log of 118min ,and Perfect result now test for first time mag.loop antenna.
SNR 20-23db and CDA 98%ok. Her also picture from my mag.loop on the table.
After 1200UTC start 3AM so only problem for DRM reception.
:) :)

29-11-2006, 13:04
The band very definitely faded out by the end of the broadcast, and the strong AM station on 9885 coming up at 1100Z didn't help either. Otherwise, it was pretty good reception overnight.
Hi,
Definitely a much weaker signal this morning. I kept switching between the Ferrite Antenna and the 16 meter long wire antenna in the morning, noticing the slightly better SNR with the Ferrite. Finally, when there still was no decoded audio at 1230, I switched to the Ferrite Antenna and, voila, there was some decoded audio today too. It seemed to be less QRM from adjacent channels after Flevo quit at 10 UTC.
Hi all.
Very good signal to 1130UTC strong AM start +5KC up. Log 98min. CDA 97%ok.
:)
Here is my report.. I had a good signal until about 11:00 UTC.
Brendan1
30-11-2006, 13:43
Well, this wasn't good. I was up and watching during part of the last dropout, and while the analog signal was there on 9885 inflicting damage, all signals were low - propagation was doing a number on everything.
For last few days, I have noted significantly long Impulse Response for this frequency, esp. at the start of transmission. Today is even worse.
It's so annoying I had to make a temporal break in the middle of the logging. When I came back, channel conditions improved a little.
Note:drop out between 1112UTC-1117UTC is due to local interference.
This is IR profile captured with DREAM. Note the changing channel condition with respect to the time.
Here is my report. From 6:00-7:00UTC it wasn't too bad, but after that it was not good.
A note on my antenna. It seems that my wideband discone performs better than my long wire from about 9.5 Mhz on up so that it what I've been using. On RNZI the difference is about 5-10 SNR between the two antenna.
Hi all.
Very good propagation today ,only short CW QRM on 9888khz .
Strong signal no QSB S9+10db in 137min. 1100 UTC DRM brake down for AM start on 9890 Khz.
:)
Hi,
No luck today at all....

Interfering AM carriers most of the time, very stong ontop and 5kHz up to the end.
4 hours of good audio makes for nice listening!
It ran all night and is still on the air. I quit logging however.
Hi all,
quite good today. The graph looks worse than it was. Perhaps UEP helped a lot against audio drop outs???? Surprisingly the ALA1530 was the best antenna today. The AM-Filter of the TS850 supressed the AM-carrier 5 kHz approx. 10 dB more than the filter in the DRT1. This gave a 2 dB better SNR.
Bernd, DF9RB
Same patterna as usual. The part between the lines was usable, the rest unfortunately not. I believe the UEP is better then EEP - for some reason UEP seems more "resistant" to a carrier wave on the same channel.
Hi,
51 minutes, 10:18-11:09 UTC. First 29 minutes quite good, the rest too low SNR
Seppo
Hi all.
Her is log. of 105min. absolut perfect propagation from NZ to my QTH .
Super perfect signal from RNZI transmitter. My S-meter peak S9+15db under all of this 105min. ((1100UTC start AM on 9890Khz and DRM brake down.))

Hi,
The first 50 minutes pretty good.

Not all that bad, but the band sure closes down at my QTH.
Long period of seldom seen signal strength and up to 25 dB SNR from down under today. Finally at 1345 UTC an AM station pegged itself on top and the fun was over....
Hi all.
Signal today was very strog and stabile but 1025UTC RNZI go down to noise , and all band from MW to 28 Mhz total black out. 1040UTC RNZI come back to S9+15db again. An X9 flare from the sunspot 929 knocked out reception completely for a while on all bands from 5 MHz and up from around 1035 - 1045 UTC.
Good signal until about 10:20 UTC.
Brendan1
06-12-2006, 13:02
Best log in several days. Still, too many AM-analog intrusions for a good clean log, shall I say?
Same here (not the best log, but) QRM from AM +5 and -5 kHz, sometimes co-channel AM. Therefore DX from the other side of the world suffers from ups and downs.
Hi
Was good until 11:30 UTC.
Hi all.
Propagation back to normal again so now only QRM from CW station on 9888Khz .
:)
Brendan1
07-12-2006, 13:02
Not so good tonight - perhaps a little leftover solar difficulties?
Seems like the window approx. 1120 - 1200 UTC is the only segment that can be received in Switzerland.
HI
Bad results 11:10-12:00 UTC. the rest time quite good
Excellent! Considering the intermittant electric pulses radiated from household electric appliances.
Hi all.
Very good today no QRM .log 179min and CDA 97% ok.

I'm willing to say that reception of this broadcast for me is quixotic at best: I never know what it's going to look like! :o
Hi all.
Perfect reciption today from 0900-1200UTC .CDA 99% ok from 170min.
Thanks Chris for very nice demo program over DRM in Europe.
:)
More than ususal today some longer periods were almost perfect. Interesting piece of programme about DRM with Chris.
If I trim the beginning and the end, I get 6 hours of nice audio. This frequency is not particularly stable or uniform day to day here (like Brendan posted).
Brendan1
12-12-2006, 13:14
Well, propagation seems to have hit some soft spots (again), but in reading the log data it looks like last night wasn't all that bad.
Not my day today.... But it differs from the usual pattern.
Hi all.
RNZI come up to SNR 24db 0916 UTC . Very good signal today also. So I have do a mixpicture from signal in DREAM .

Sixten, your log may be shorter than mine but it looks much better! A lot of gaps during the overnight broadcast today, and I'll put the blame on the current solar conditions... :(
In this case, this broadcast was better for me than Montsinery.
An amazing 99.93% audio for the enitre broadcast!

Not very good at all today.
Hi all,
Very good propagation today from NZ signal strength was S9+10db from 0800UTC but problem from AM . All AM station close down 0900UTC to 1100UTC. Very clear cannel. So 2 hour with very good music.

Not very good, except for 1125 - 1155 UTC.

Very good - glitches at the start were my switching antennas. I tried 15720 an hour earlier and only had a SNR of 4 - 5 dB.
Hi Everyone,
This broadcast continues to be very solid to the Pacific Northwest.

Good results tonight. I'm still working on configuring VAC, Winrad and Dream for best results.
Hi Everyone,
Continues to be solid here during the overnight hours.

I somehow failed to switch the logging at 0500, so this is a two for one. Good reception here.

I was late for the (unscheduled) change to 9890, but it was much better than 13840 Khz.

Good signal, but it appears that latency problems with Perseus/VAC have resurfaced.

It's the weekend, so I could stay up later and log a bit of this.

Reception would be possible in europe in the early morning if RNZI would move 5 kHz down.
I can see the signal strong enough in the panadapter, but there is a strong AM station 5 kHz higher now.

The DRM waveform disappeared at 0515 - when it didn't reappear in a few minutes, I tuned to the AM frequency of 9615 kHz. When I went back later the DRM signal was back.
A trace of RNZI here this morning, but too much QRM at ±5 kHz to be able to get any audio.
A little bit better than last time. But the ±5 kHz AM stations are a pain in the neck...
Something simmering between the AM neighbours.

Hi all,
A very rare reception here.
Short log. Good signal today ( S-Meter 9 ), but also AM on 9885 KHz.

Hi all,
I got the label of this TX from the other side of the globe but no decoding...
Tentative of reception at Paris.

Hi all,
nearly same situation as in my log from 2008 (!) in this Thread before !
Strong signal from RNZI but an AM Station 5 up makes a stable decoding impossible  !
