View Full Version : RNZI on 17675kHz
Partially unattended log. Audio sounds better than the graph has shown. If only the transmission can use UEP coding mode.
Unattended Log. A little shaky at the start of logging.
Partially unattended log. For some unknown reason, dream crashed. So I had to split the log into two halves. Signal is not that strong, but listenable.

Interesting log. I haven't tried to do a lot of RNZI logging recently as conditions are no longer very good from NZ to my QTH. Today, because Dream crashed, I wasn't able to log my usual five other stations, so I decided to do a log of RNZI instead. As of 0405Z, they appeared to be off air, as no waveform was visible.
15 November addition: forgot to mention that RNZI was in UEP mode, running at 49.1%, all according to the SDC data showing on Dream. Can someone tell me what this means compared to the AAC/AAC+ modes?
Hi All
I managed to listen to RNZI on 17675 kHz today.
Cheers, Chris
Good signal, but I have no time to listen to the programme. At 0500 UTC brief drop-out due to adjacent channel interference.Overall, strong and stable signal. Good reception result considering the thunder storm nearby.
PS: the DRM schedule of RNZI is so confusing esp in the weekend they switched on and off transmission on end, such an annoyance!
I don't know what happened to the ionosphere today and yesterday. Signal strength is drastically weaker than normal. Ionosphere disturbance or simply the transmission site maintenance? If conditions like this continue ,they should lower the bit rate or/and use CELP source coding scheme considering most of their programmes are speech nature.
Unattended log. Good reception quality. No more complaint.:D
Just a short log. Good condition for this frequency.
The overnight 17675kHz reception report (unattended).

Super signal into New England. Decode at a solid 24-25db. Amazing for this time of night. 16 Meters was dead except for this signal. Great programming to boot, armchair reception from the other side of the world.

Okay, I picked up this tiny little bit of signal following the planned off-air period for antenna work. Not much, and hopefully tomorrow, the 20th, does better.
Brendan1
20-10-2008, 05:27
Okay, this is much better! Not a bad evening's work, and far better than my expectations. Last night's log (19th) may have just been showing some spurious RF and not an actual RNZI signal. Solar conditions are approximately the same, which rules out such crappy, spotty reception compared to tonight.

Lots of 'change' last night. While I heartily approve of change in politics, this kind is nowhere near as good.
Brendan1
22-10-2008, 17:07
Well, I must confess to forgetting to set the logger yesterday, so this got started a little late. Still didn't help: the band closed pretty early.
Brendan1
24-10-2008, 20:48
There's an awful lot of dead time showing up...:(
Brendan1
25-10-2008, 17:21
Dream crashed at 0340; sorry about that. However, based on what data I did record, it looks like it wouldn't have suddenly sprung to 100% later on, helping the overall log.
Brendan1
26-10-2008, 16:15
The band is still dropping out quite well. Local sunset is now at 2358UTC, so to get nearly 2 hours of band opening after sunset is actually doing pretty well. It'll get worse though...
Brendan1
27-10-2008, 15:31
Interesting little upward blip at the end of the log, but it didn't really help out much! :(
Brendan1
28-10-2008, 02:29
No need to continue logging, nothing's there, so I cut it off early.
Brendan1
29-10-2008, 05:17
Today was not my day: two logs didn't record, and Dream crashed while recording this one. The band had closed by the time the crash happened, so it wasn't all bad.
Brendan1
30-10-2008, 02:42
Right on time the band closed, dropping out fast.
Brendan1
31-10-2008, 16:58
I let the logger run the entire scheduled period, and there are some blips in the SNR later. The band is still dropping out around 0200, so nothing has changed.
Another observation: after this one finishes, I tune to 15720 which is the next posted frequency, and there is nothing there for me to even attempt to copy.
:(
Brendan1
01-11-2008, 16:08
A rather steep drop-off last night, but great reception up until that point.
Brendan1
03-11-2008, 17:02
I'll try again: last night's posting isn't here. Still closing down around 0200-0230.
Brendan1
04-11-2008, 03:06
Shut down pretty much on time tonight.
Brendan1
05-11-2008, 16:47
Shut down early last night.
Good reception in Japan. One and a half hours with 98% CDA.
Due to a bug somewhere (the character code of this NEC computer???) my log displays the longitude as "38E" instead of "138E", so the distance to the TX is wrong. It should be 9234 km.

Hi Terje! Welcome to the Pacific side of DRM! :)
Conditions here were not very good at all, unfortunately. Nothing for the 6th, it appears the transmitter was undergoing maintenance.

Woooo, a cliff appeared on my log, and RNZI dropped right over it. I have noticed over the years though that the higher frequency bands will do this, and shut down super fast. The lower ones (<15MHz) don't give up as easily, but then they don't propagate as far or as well as the higher ones (at the current solar minimum). I can hardly wait for the solar cycle to start climbing.
Hi Bendan and all,
Yeah, my "3rd QTH" is at this side of the big Pacific Pond, and it is interesting to hear what is going on in this part of the world in form of DRM. Unfortunately I have not been able to rig any antennas here except for a few meters of wire strung from the house out in the miniature garden, even that we reside beside a dry river bed and it would be possible to set up a 400 m longwire from "our" house :D
Today I think the conditions were not the best with a K=4, so the log looks a bit awful. I had to use DreamCalc, as my own DRM-Plotter stood me up on the "138 E" (shows up as "38 E"). Need to look into this when I get back to QTH #1.
Cheers,
Brendan1
09-11-2008, 15:19
Well, I was wondering if I should have mentioned that bug to the programmer. ;)
I'm not going to complain about the K index: first time I've been able to record the entire 17675 broadcast!
Brendan1
10-11-2008, 03:53
The band shut down early again. Must be back to 'normal.'
Brendan1
11-11-2008, 02:56
Definitely a famine tonight: the band closed very early.
I'll leave the log out today. I thought that RNZI would come in much stronger here, but there you are. This morning here about midnight UTC won't produce much at all...
Brendan1
12-11-2008, 06:35
RNZI stayed open a little later tonight, maybe about 30-45 minutes worth.
Brendan1
13-11-2008, 02:24
Another short night, and while technically not over as I write this, there is no signal at all.
Brendan1
14-11-2008, 06:46
Pretty short and nasty tonight.
Brendan1
15-11-2008, 02:00
No need to prolong the agony of trying to log something that is no longer there.
Brendan1
17-11-2008, 02:55
An odd, long dip last night on the 16th, nothing bad tonight until band closure.
Brendan1
18-11-2008, 02:20
Rather too short tonight.
Brendan1
19-11-2008, 17:33
Didn't even make it for an entire hour last night. By the time the winter season actually starts I may not get anything at all.
Brendan1
20-11-2008, 16:40
Apparently off-air for transmitter maintenance.
Brendan1
21-11-2008, 16:51
This is a really strange log: usually RNZI is wide open at the start, and this log certainly shows a differently behaving band last night.
Brendan1
22-11-2008, 16:50
Right on time: sunset sees both the sun and the band go down. There were some attempts at coming back up, but no such luck.
Brendan1
24-11-2008, 16:44
Made it until about 20 minutes after sunset here last night.
Brendan1
26-11-2008, 16:32
The 25th pretty much follows the latest pattern, but last night, the 26th, was totally off! A bizarre but very nice band opening to say the least.
Brendan1
27-11-2008, 18:35
Just like clockwork: completely gone at local sunset, precisely.
Brendan1
28-11-2008, 18:04
Not a great log, but it did last a little longer than the 'norm' of late.
Brendan1
29-11-2008, 18:09
Very poor results once again.
Brendan1
01-12-2008, 02:44
An "A" index of 1 and a "K" of 0 didn't help tonight.
Brendan1
02-12-2008, 17:21
SF=68, K=0, A=0.
Not much to log last night, although RNZI was trying to make it up here.
Brendan1
03-12-2008, 16:32
Quite mediocre. SF69, A0, K1.
Brendan1
04-12-2008, 17:22
Transmitter work last night, although I did see a very faint trace about 0145 that didn't last and was too weak for any decoding.
Brendan1
05-12-2008, 17:11
Some good but brief periods last night, otherwise not enough SNR for most of the broadcast log.
Brendan1
06-12-2008, 17:57
Interesting log, as it shows some odd propagation here.
Brendan1
07-12-2008, 17:08
Quite poor conditions: K index was unchanged, A was 12 (now 20), and the K was 2. :(
Brendan1
08-12-2008, 16:50
The A level was still too high last night.
Brendan1
09-12-2008, 16:52
Even low K and A indices didn't help last evening. Very sporadic propagation into the west coast of NA.
Brendan1
10-12-2008, 16:43
Once again propagation was very irregular last night. SF was still 69, A:0, and K:0.
Brendan1
11-12-2008, 17:09
Wow, almost nothing at all. SF was 70, A:0, and K:2 at the time.
Brendan1
13-12-2008, 23:44
Missed the 12th, sorry to say!
Only some brief periods of actual signal last night, not all that long.
Brendan1
14-12-2008, 17:14
A very short period of excellent reception last night. I started a little early as the CBC was off air.
Brendan1
15-12-2008, 06:30
Very poor propagation and reception tonight. SF has dropped back to 69, A:0, and K:1.
Brendan1
16-12-2008, 16:45
Very short band opening last night. SF is still 69, A was 0, and K was 1.
Brendan1
17-12-2008, 17:10
Reception was pretty much the same, and solar prop was virtually unchanged.
Brendan1
19-12-2008, 16:47
Reception was good, but only too briefly.
Brendan1
20-12-2008, 17:05
The usual: good but all too short.
Brendan1
21-12-2008, 18:00
A little longer listening time last night, first time in several weeks.
Brendan1
22-12-2008, 23:40
A little better last night, RNZI was up for slightly longer.
Brendan1
23-12-2008, 16:47
What is it with 17MHz not liking darkness?
Brendan1
24-12-2008, 17:37
Still closing early here. :(
Merry Christmas and Seasons' Greetings to all!
Brendan1
25-12-2008, 18:34
A higher A index seemed to help a little last evening.
Merry Christmas, and Happy Boxing Day to the Antipodes!
Brendan1
26-12-2008, 16:46
A fairly typical evening's log.
Brendan1
27-12-2008, 20:51
Extremely poor last night.
Brendan1
28-12-2008, 17:54
Extremely poor results last night.
Brendan1
29-12-2008, 17:00
Extremely poor propagation last night. Almost not worth it.
Brendan1
30-12-2008, 16:50
I hope the rest of the winter is not like this.
Brendan1
31-12-2008, 16:59
There really was a signal there, I saw it! Just a bad night for radio... :(
Last log for a few days while I move to Chicago for a few weeks. I'll try to log RNZI from there, but I'm doubtful as to any possible success.
Happy New Year! Frohes Neues Jahr! Bonne Année! :D
Brendan1
10-01-2009, 02:53
Nothing copied here yesterday or today. Not one iota of RF from RNZI unfortunately. I might try 9870 or the other higher frequencies tomorrow, but the space/time difference might be too great.
Not so successful here in Japan with the Elektor and a noisy PC power supply.
Not much better today either...
Switched on too late. Grrr... Good signal with the Elektor and SoDiRa. :)
The beginning of this transmission was no good here, but it improved towards the end.
