Hello,

quite a lot of audio at the beginning. Band closed to South-East Germany at 18:45. During the radio play at the beginning there was some noise in the background audible. Frequency approx. 300 Hz to high.

Hi Mathias,
only a weak signal here in Germany this time of year, no audio decoding.
Something I have noticed the past days, your frequency seems to be about 285 Hz too high, I think we had mentioned this last summer when it was even more on the other frequency, see attachment, the Rx is pretty accurate and using the digital output directly there are no downconverter or soundcard oscillators involved.

For the first time this year I got a trace of something on my ferrite antenna from Santiago. The Spring is surely coming.

I have to look into my antennas. The ferrite seems to be off-frequency, as I got better SNR when I switched to th 10 m wire antenna at the very end of the transmission. Before 19 UTC there was no trace of a signal...

Did the conditions suddenly worsen or did something happen to the transmitter? I lost the signal around 1848 UTC.

Seems like the conditions are improving towards Chile again. I got 90% decoded audio 1926 UTC until 1950 UTC and between 1927 - 1945 UTC I got 95% decoded audio. Despite the low signal strength and the relatively high bitrate 20.96 kbps tonight's result was surprising. But is it necessary to run such a high bitrate for a Mono transmission? :confused:

Seems like the conditions are improving even more towards Chile. I got 97% decoded audio 1917 UTC until 1959 UTC. THe S-Meter read an average of +6 dB above yesterday's readings around 1940 UTC.

Very QSB first 30min. but now signal go up and this was my best reciption from Santiago. Transmission in Mode B and very good sound up to 14Khz.

Around 1916 UTC the conditions improved. There was a weak period in the middle of the log, but then it got better again. The signal topped around +40 dBuV at its best. Then at the end of the transmission the signal dropped about 10 dB.

Thanks for the switch to 4/64 at 1804 UTC. I got an instant increase in SNR here of about 5 dB and the sound came instantly as well. But, unfortunately the conditions were worse than usual, and the needle did not pass the S3 mark during the whole transmission. Please keep this configuration? Seems an interesting thing compared to 16/64.

Terrible log tonight, but it can't be helped... The radio weather just won't co-operate for the time being...

There was a second TX break at 1946 UTC.

Surprisingly good reception tonight. I wonder why the delay suddenly changed around 1911 UTC - can be seen in my DRMShow screen shot. When the signal increased towards the end I switched to slow AGC which brought the SNR to a maximum of 25 dB.

Had a Morphy Richards sitting on the frequency at 1800 UTC, but even with the external antenna (hi) there was no reaction. Switched to the Yaesu FRG 7700 (and the same antenna) and Dream and found that the signal was S6-7 and uninterrupted audio coming in. This condition remained until just 15 minutes before QRT, when the signal dropped all of a sudden. But why such a high bitrate?????????? :confused:

Tonight was not as good as last night, but the conditions were generally bad the whole day here. The best bit was from 1908 UTC until 10 minutes before the end of the transmission. There was a TX break a few minutes before QRT.

A late start (?) I could not see any trace of signal before 1820 UTC. After that it was a series of ups and downs. After 1920 UTC there was nothing.

Quite good at the beginning; a not so good middle part, but then it picked up again. However, the signal rapidly got weaker towards the end of the transmission. The conditions today were generally poor anyway.

Not too bad tonigt. My own DRMShow shows 96 % decoded audio if I zoom in 1828 - 1949 UTC. DreamCalc says 91.5 % and my programme 92.2 % over the whole log. There was a rapid decrease of the signal strength towards the end.

Today was not very successful. The best part was between 1830 and 1905 with almost perfect reception. The rest was miserable.

A weak start with my temporary antenna. The snowfall last night brought the regular long wire down. At 1820 UTC something happened and I stopped the log. When I came back to the receiver at 1930 UTC the signal was much stronger and the last part of the log looks pretty nice. :)

I have very good sinal from start and 20min.but now DRM brake down in 10min.

Propagation was very good and Smeter peak S8 and SNR up to 22db CDA 100% this time.

If signal stringht is S6 and SNR18db play only CDA50% ok .

This problem come from too high bit rate of 20,96kbps. So best for this distance and more CDA switch down bitrate to 14,56kbps and 16-QAM/ SM16- QAM. This give 10Khz Audio Spectrum. TDF on 17875Khz transmitt in this mode and now CDA 100% from S3 and SNR13db.

At last a DX from far away with some content. I did not switch over until 18:40, but it seems to have picked up later on anyway. The log was mostly unattended.

The overall result from 18:40 - 20:00: 66 % CDA
From 19:03 - 20:00: 90 % CDA and
from 19:03 - 19:53 I got 97 % CDA.

South America is finally coming back to Europe! :) A pleasant change.

Hm, this was complicated... If you look at the log you'll see a screenshot from Dream pasted into the log. I came down 18:25 UTC, then there was a weak carrier wave with Fading, but no DRM. But in Dream some 15 dB SNR can be seen, but no audio, and this must definitely have been before 18:25.

I started logging at 18:30 and at some point the DRM seemed to have been restored. The last 12 minutes I was present, and I noted that the DRM became stronger, but not a trace of decoded audio.

Anyone with better luck out there? :confused:

This evening's "the best of CVC" lasted 57 minutes with 66.66% CDA. The "ultimate best of CVC" of the evening generated 91.5% CDA during 37 minutes between 18:13 and 18:50. After 19:10 there was virtually nothing more to log.

I can not understand how this is . I can not heard no more station in 17 Mhz band this time , no station on 15Mhz, 13Mhz .Only 5 stations on 11Mhz band on max S5. In 9Mhz I can heard 10 stations !!!!!!
And so now CVC up to S9+10db !!!!!!!!!!!!!!:confused: :confused:

Much better conditions tonight than yesterday. Start with Mode B until 18:56, then Mode A. The SNR topped at 20.8 dB with Mode B at 18:05, with Mode A SNR was best with 23.2 dB at 19:23 UTC.

The decoded audio was 81% for the Mode B until 18:56 and 89.3% for Mode A until 19:39. From then the signal strength started to weaken rapidly.

Hm, some problems in the beginning. A carrier came on some 5 minutes late, then I started the log and the rest was unattended. The DRM started around 25 minutes into the transmission. For more details, please see the comments in the log.

Hmm, sadly I took my receiver with me here to Oldenburg to measure some things so I can't log this week. :(
But anyway interesting results so far. I will set up logging again tomorrow even if my 2003 elektor rx has some probs at frequencies above 16 Mhz.

@ Mathias: Is it possible maybe to test some days with a QAM 16 Main Service Channel mode? Bitrate would have to be lowered a little but data would be much more robust and it should lower nessessary SNR for proper decoding to 12-14 dB.

Mathias, it would be an idea to try some other bitrates in Mode A as well. After all, these are test transmissions.

Things are getting better here more in the north too.
At start that CVC TX is the fastest thing in the air :D , audio is very good, 70% CDA over one hour at that high bitrate with low SNR is amazing.

We actually wanted a lower bitrate than 20 kbps, not 24 kbps! CVC was on tonight despite the schedule in "baseportal.com" says "Mon - Fri". 24 kbps does not work here at all; then the DRM modulator failed (?) at 1923 UT and the carrier finally disappeared at 1940. :confused: :mad:

I noticed that the carrier was on just before 18UTC, there was some tuning and then the carrier disappeared. But on the whole, I think that the newlyborn sunspots helped to improve tonight's reception; first time I had perfect decoding up until the end. The overall CDA was just below 92%. :)

Not bad yesterday: My Elektor is a little bit weak from 16 MHz up to 21 Mhz (21 is max).

I logged from 19.21 UTC to the end. First some problems, but from 19.33 - 19.59 UTC (End) more than 99% correct decoded audio. It seems like Mode A works over this distance at 16m very nice, too :)

I would really appreciate it, if CVC could give QAM16 in Service Channel a chance for some days with audio rates of 16.xx kBit in Mode A, because this constellation is much more robust and should lower nessessary SNR for proper decoding to about 12-14 dB.

Por várias vezes eu havia falado a ele que existia forte diferença de nível de volume entre os canais L e R e baixa modulação em geral. Hoje, após seu contato informando que havia feito alguns ajustes, gravei a CVC e os canais de áudio L e R estavam iguais e em bom nível de volume.
Antes o canal esquerdo estava com nível de volume 4 db acima do canal direito. Este problema causava má diferenciação do sinal estéreo, ou melhor, estéreo paramétrico.
Gostaria que outros participantes deste fórum também fizessem algum comentário sobre estes ajustes e também se já haviam percebido esta diferença de 4 db entre os canais L e R?
Afinal, estéreo é para ter bom áudio em ambos os canais L e R, com os mesmos níveis de áudio, diferenciando apenas quando a música oferecer alguma diferença entre canais.

There was a TX problem at 18:27 UTC with at first only carrier and then nothing for some time. Ten minutes before end the signal was really strong for some seconds so that the high noise floor was visible.

Two times transmitter problems, first only carrier, then nothing for a while.
Signal was strong with visible noise floor and pilot carriers.
SNR is TX limited to poor 21dB only, could have been up to 30dB at that signal strength.
Audio is very good for 18 kbps.
Here better reception with L-antenna and less resyncs with the FlexRadio running at only 48k instead of 96k sample rate.

After a long time I received again this TX. A weak signal but it gave a result for less than an hour until it disappeared.

TX frequency drifted down 55 Hz during the first ten minutes
and later finally settled on ~17860.29 kHz.
