View Full Version : Vatican Radio 7370 kHz transmission to North America
This evening's 7370 kHz reception report.
Audio at 14.56 kb/s. Lot's of drop outs.

Well, this is what I expected. I thought that changing to 41 meters would be a mistake (at least from my view!), and this proves it. Coming in earlier on a lower frequency just won't make it this far west. Oh well... :(
Brendan1
31-10-2006, 02:03
This is a strange one. The SNR is very high, but no audio was decoded? I wasn't here to listen either, so I can only assume that something went wrong on the other end. The SNR is much higher than yesterday, but that matters little if there's no audio... :(
Brendan1
01-11-2006, 02:05
Much better today, at least going by the graph tells me. Audio was decoded, but the signal strength was up and down.
Brendan1
02-11-2006, 02:08
As the days get shorter, the propagation gets better.
Brendan1
04-11-2006, 02:17
Each night gets better. I just wish I could listen live, instead of working. A bit of a late start, but otherwise no problems.
Brendan1
05-11-2006, 23:52
Right on time, and only a very few, short audible dropouts today.
Brendan1
07-11-2006, 01:08
Good log, only a few small hits shown.
Brendan1
08-11-2006, 02:08
Some early not-so-good SNR figures, but it did get better, judging by the logged data.
Brendan1
09-11-2006, 01:07
Good graph today. Looks like 7 megs has stabilized on this path now that the fall conditions are in full swing.
Brendan1
10-11-2006, 02:29
Something wasn't working this afternoon. Looks like the propagation was fairly disturbed on 7 megs.
Brendan1
11-11-2006, 00:00
Far better than yesterday. :)
This evening's 7370 kHz reception report.
Very good except for three small transmission breaks.
The Impulse response was rather wide (see 2nd attached file).
-Zyg-
Brendan1
12-11-2006, 01:03
Not as good as Zyg's log. Must be that 1000 or so extra miles!
This evening's 7370 kHz reception report.
Pretty good considering the modulation was using the faster 64 QAM!
-Zyg-
Brendan1
13-11-2006, 02:15
Conditions are just off right now, this is the worst log since the changeover in frequencies.
Brendan1
14-11-2006, 02:07
Very poor log today, conditions have deteriorated. Late in the log it looks better, but that was too late.
Brendan1
16-11-2006, 01:30
This transmission has gone to pot. I know the solar flux is actually higher right now, but that seems to be hurting my reception, not helping!
Brendan1
17-11-2006, 00:58
Not all that bad this afternoon, at least according to the log. :) Much better than the previous days.
Brendan1
18-11-2006, 01:06
Much, much better today - lower Solar Flux Index is doing it.
Brendan1
19-11-2006, 02:05
No MSC or SDC at all today. Only the FAC showed anything at all.
Brendan1
21-11-2006, 01:17
This broadcast turned out quite well today. Nice and flat.
Brendan1
22-11-2006, 01:03
Not all that bad an afternoon, but conditions are not so good, again...
Brendan1
23-11-2006, 01:12
Okay, slightly better, but not first rate.
Brendan1
24-11-2006, 05:21
Somewhat rocky reception tonight.
Brendan1
24-11-2006, 23:50
Not very good today, in fact downright horrible. I'll chalk it up to the not so good ionospheric conditions today...
This evening's 7370 kHz reception report.
-Zyg-
Pretty good. As always I really enjoyed the last 15 minutes of music!
-Zyg-
Brendan1
26-11-2006, 02:07
Good reception tonight - first time in several days it's been this good.
Brendan1
26-11-2006, 23:47
Hmmm, no SDC, no MSC, only FAC today.
Hi. New guy here. I have a freshly modified Icom IC-725. Tonight I managed to copy most of the 7370 signal. I still have a little cleanup to do on the mod job, and have to get levels set appropriately, etc. I'm near Boston.
Brendan1
28-11-2006, 01:04
Here's my log for the 26th. Terrible, although propagation seems to be the blame today.
Damon - good work on getting the converter running. Your last log looks pretty good actually. This broadcast tends to be a bit sporadic into North America, so your data is not far off the norm. You are closer than I am, so the tweaks you mention may get you even more signal. Congratulations, and welcome to the DRM group!
Brendan1
29-11-2006, 01:08
The log looks pretty good today, and should have been audible for the most part (although I wasn't home...). :o
Brendan1
30-11-2006, 01:04
Today was not without difficulty.
Brendan, thanks for the welcome. Attached below are the results of 7370 on the Icom 725 tonight. Reception was excellent. You can see it looks a lot better than the other night. I think I have the radio set up exactly the way I need it.
Brendan1
30-11-2006, 02:06
Damon - everything looks great. That is a very good result, although you are several thousand miles closer to Radio Vaticana than I am. Another broadcast you can try to get here in the states is the Radio New Zealand broadcast on 17675 in the afternoon/evening hours. It is very long distance, but I have successfully logged it with good audio many times, and recently they've been logged in Europe as well on that frequency and some others they use. RNZI is a great station, and you don't really need any foreign language skills either!
Good luck, and welcome again.
Brendan1
01-12-2006, 01:02
Looks like the DRM encoder was locked up again...or propagation was simply horrible. :(
This evening's 7370 kHz reception report.
Very Good!
-Zyg-
Brendan1
02-12-2006, 01:09
Too low for me - no decoding today.
This evening's 7370 kHz reception report.
Very good!
The middle blip is due to my computer...
-Zyg-
Brendan1
03-12-2006, 23:53
Very poor conditions for me today.
Brendan1
06-12-2006, 01:14
Lower band, long range conditions are not very good right now, and this log shows it.
Brendan1
07-12-2006, 01:37
Rather rocky conditions today.
Brendan1
08-12-2006, 01:05
Slightly better, judging by the log. Seems to be taking a while for the band to truly open up to Italy.
Brendan1
09-12-2006, 02:07
Not very good conditions today - worst log in a couple of months I do believe.
Brendan1
10-12-2006, 03:55
A better day today. Conditions are so up and down right now...
Brendan1
12-12-2006, 01:06
A so-so log: some ups and a fair number of downs, including an early closure.
Brendan1
13-12-2006, 01:04
Pretty bad today - no decoding at all.
Brendan1
14-12-2006, 01:11
Another sad day: no decoding today.
Brendan1
15-12-2006, 01:17
Another bad day's log. Almost not worth to try to log anything right now.
Brendan1
16-12-2006, 01:08
Still not very good, but slightly better than yesterday.
Brendan1
16-12-2006, 23:56
Better than yesterday (again), and this broadcast seems to be recovering some of its' strength.
Brendan1
17-12-2006, 23:53
Still stumbling along: no audio again today.
Brendan1
19-12-2006, 01:18
Mediocrity rules. :(
Brendan1
20-12-2006, 02:25
This is getting boring. Almost no broadcast did well today, and this one is no exception...
Brendan1
21-12-2006, 02:04
Still not doing very well here, although certainly listenable for a period today.
Brendan1
22-12-2006, 02:04
Not at all very good today. Last log for the holidays - going away for a couple of weeks, and away from the gear for the duration. It's very hard to take a desktop and black box receiver on the airplane these days...
This evening's 7370kHz reception report.
Excellent - probably the best long distance transmission to the SE USA. Wish they would go parametric stereo. The last 15 minutes of the choirs was awesome!
The audio blip was due to my computer.
-Zyg-
Brendan1
09-01-2007, 01:16
Not all that bad today! Best log in more than a month or so. Okay, so I've been gone for two weeks, but it has still been quite some time since a good reception.
Brendan1
10-01-2007, 01:37
This broadcast is getting better yet again! Good log today.
Brendan1
11-01-2007, 02:31
Continuing to come in well out here.
Brendan1
12-01-2007, 02:13
Another good log today. Conditions seem to be stabilizing.
Brendan1
13-01-2007, 01:06
The band hadn't quite opened yet - you can see that propagation was not good at the start but improved fairly quickly.
Brendan1
18-01-2007, 01:26
Once more this broadcast has gotten fairly mediocre. Not much can be done about it however...
Brendan1
19-01-2007, 01:05
Fairly up and down today. :(
Brendan1
20-01-2007, 01:15
No "UP", only "DOWN" today. First time in a while this has happened.
Brendan1
21-01-2007, 01:11
From yesterday's bad results to today's rather better log.
Brendan1
22-01-2007, 03:33
Lousy. That says it all.
Brendan1
23-01-2007, 01:09
Very disappointing today. I'll blame the solar minimum...
Brendan1
24-01-2007, 01:58
The usual: up and down.
Brendan1
25-01-2007, 01:09
The lower bands did very, very well today. A very nice log. :D
Brendan1
26-01-2007, 01:11
Unsteady conditions again, and mostly "down" today.
Brendan1
27-01-2007, 01:09
No decoding today at all. I wonder if there was a technical glitch at their end? With the SNR as good as 16 dB, something should have shown up on the log.
This evening's 7370kHz reception report. Strong signal, but no MSC, no SDC, and only FAC.
-Zyg-
Brendan1
28-01-2007, 23:55
Much better today: full decoding, and the last 15 minutes of music were very enjoyable to listen to.
Brendan1
30-01-2007, 01:06
Wow - what a change from yesterday. Doesn't look like anything came in today.
Brendan1
31-01-2007, 01:32
Nothing again. The western path from the EU is just not opening well.
Brendan1
01-02-2007, 01:12
Still nothing. It may simply be too early in the evening for 41 meters to make it this far west: the slow rise in SNR towards the end of the transmission is a clue.
Brendan1
02-02-2007, 01:13
The dead band conditions continued for me today.
Brendan1
03-02-2007, 02:10
Slightly better, but still no decoding.
Brendan1
04-02-2007, 00:09
WOW! A much better day and log. Interestingly, the solar flux number is lower today than yesterday: 87 today, 90 yesterday.
Brendan1
04-02-2007, 23:51
A very good day, again. Conditions are very good for 41 meters to the western US right now.
Brendan1
07-02-2007, 01:04
No log for 5 Feb: Dream crashed when I was at work. Today's broadcast looks to have been very good, as the log is quite acceptable.
Brendan1
08-02-2007, 02:14
Back to a less than great log. :(
Brendan1
09-02-2007, 01:05
I think this is my all time best log for Vatican Radio. I just wish I was able to listen to it!
Brendan1
10-02-2007, 01:05
Not as great as yesterday, but very good nevertheless.
Brendan1
11-02-2007, 01:08
The good reception continues. Another good log.
Brendan1
13-02-2007, 01:09
Back to the doldrums: not very good today... :(
Brendan1
14-02-2007, 01:10
Even worse than yesterday. The 41 meter band is certainly changeable lately.
Brendan1
15-02-2007, 01:10
Well, the SNR is at least getting a little better. :(
Brendan1
16-02-2007, 01:15
Slow improvement still, but not enough for any audio! :(
Brendan1
17-02-2007, 01:10
Sigh, no audio again. The band is just not cooperating.
Brendan1
17-02-2007, 23:48
Another disappointing day. :(
Brendan1
19-02-2007, 02:23
My bad luck continues. :(
Brendan1
20-02-2007, 01:04
Only slightly better (just), but still not good enough for audio.
Brendan1
21-02-2007, 01:04
Getting better still, but not quite back up to where it should be.
Brendan1
22-02-2007, 02:58
Not bad, but still some room to improve.
Brendan1
23-02-2007, 02:07
Not so good this afternoon.
Brendan1
24-02-2007, 01:39
Quite good today.
Brendan1
25-02-2007, 02:06
Another good day, conditions have definitely improved.
ppfreitas
25-02-2007, 19:31
Good reception from Vatican City. No fade outs during total broadcast.
ppfreitas
25-02-2007, 19:34
Good reception. Three fade outs.
Edit: Threads merged, Simone
Brendan1
27-02-2007, 01:10
Up and down, but good decoding today. :)
ppfreitas
27-02-2007, 22:38
Perfect reception for the entire broadcast.
Brendan1
28-02-2007, 01:06
Still rather variable today. :(
Brendan1
01-03-2007, 01:12
Wow, a real retreat today. No decoding. :(
ppfreitas
01-03-2007, 11:13
Quite variable reception today, with average signal at 17.8 +-3.5 dB, over the full broadcast.
Paulo
Brendan1
02-03-2007, 01:41
Still bad reception. No joy today.
Brendan1
03-03-2007, 17:09
Nothing good last night.
ppfreitas
03-03-2007, 17:51
Perfect reception tonight.
Paulo Freitas
Brendan1
04-03-2007, 01:53
Far less than perfection for me tonight!
Brendan1
05-03-2007, 00:07
No good copy yet again. 41 meters is just not working very well once again.
Brendan1
06-03-2007, 01:28
Another sub-par log. When will it ever end? :(
Brendan1
07-03-2007, 01:22
The drought ended today: for VR, a great log for me.
Brendan1
08-03-2007, 01:25
Feast or famine, that's VR for North America. Today was a famine day. :(
Brendan1
09-03-2007, 01:11
Either famine or the Black Death has hit this broadcast for me. :(
Brendan1
10-03-2007, 02:13
Today, I blame a plague of locusts. :(
Brendan1
13-03-2007, 01:55
No data recorded today: no signal was detected, or conditions on 41 meters are so bad, it simply didn't make it across the "pond."
Brendan1
14-03-2007, 01:11
Yesterday might not have been a fluke: today's log shows only a couple of very small spikes in the frame rate, right at the end of the broadcast. Forty one meters is obviously in the tank now. And no, it's not the shift to daylight savings time, we don't do that here in Arizona. :p
Brendan1
15-03-2007, 02:26
Some improvement (I've said that before!) today, but not nearly enough. :(
Brendan1
16-03-2007, 01:15
Much the same as yesterday, with no real improvement.
Brendan1
16-03-2007, 23:53
A slight change for the better, but still not good enough for decoding. At least the signal is there for the entire scheduled transmission period.
Brendan1
18-03-2007, 00:21
Slow but steady improvement for 41 meters.
Brendan1
19-03-2007, 03:56
Back down into the dumps, again.
Brendan1
20-03-2007, 01:22
I hope VR changes bands soon. This is getting depressing...
Brendan1
21-03-2007, 02:07
As the days lengthen, this band will only get worse for long distance DRM.
Brendan1
22-03-2007, 01:11
Just when I give up, it always seems to get better. :o
Brendan1
23-03-2007, 01:27
Oh no! The blahs have returned...
Brendan1
24-03-2007, 01:15
The blahs made worse by lightning today. :(
FritzWue
10-11-2007, 23:47
Surprisingly good result listening through my 160m matchbox.
Hi Everyone,
This broadcast has been getting a little stronger each day. Today, about halfway through the broadcast I switched to my 1m loop and gained a few dB which brought it to a decodable level. Very nice music indeed!
73,
Mark
Hi Everyone,
The log on the 18th was the strongest yet this season for me. However, today was much worse.

Hi Everyone,
A fair amount of decoding - but still need a few more dB to make it solid.
73,
Mark
Here is this evening's reception report.
Transmission ended 15 minutes early. Good signal as always.
-Zyg-
Brendan1
30-12-2007, 02:22
My first logging attempt in some time for VR. Not much luck I'm afraid.
Brendan1
30-12-2007, 23:58
No data logged today - nothing "heard" in other words. Not one speck of data on the graph showing any signal from VR.
The Ten-Tec RX-320D seems to have a 3 to 5 dB lower SNR than the R-1000 (with Sat-Schneider mixer). Not sure if it was the conditions or the new receiver or both. Signal did seem to come up though, and the transmission ended on the half hour and not the 45 minute point...
-Zyg-
This evening's reception report. Some of the audio frame blips are the fault of my computer.
-Zyg-
This evening's 7370 KHz reception. Although the audio frame plots look a little ragged, the audio was pretty good, just on the verge of disappearing but it hung in there!
-Zyg-
This evening's 7370KHz reception report.
This evening's reception report.
Vatican Radio continues to have an excellent signal over the 8048 Km path into Atlanta!
The schedule states a 45 min transmission, but recently the signal is switched off after 30 min.
-Zyg-
This evening's 7370kHz reception report. Six minutes late (2nd snowfall in a week in Atlanta caused a shift in focus!) The blips are the fault of my computer.

Decoded audio 35,77% (23:26-23:29h)
Spotted Vatican Radio on 7370 kHz here in Shizuoka City, Japan around 2305 UTC (08 JST), but due to some trouble I did not get the log going. However, at 2330 AM started on a nearby channel and the fun was over.
The conditions were not so good on the 17th, but I caught the label anyway. The distance to the TX in the log is the short path, but this signal must certainly have come to Japan via North America?!
Brendan1
29-01-2009, 00:47
Actually caught a few minutes here in Chicago. Nothing to decode, but RF was here just the same. First time in a while I've seen anything from VR.
Brendan1
31-01-2009, 00:37
Not even as much RF as the 28th.

Hi all,
Not bad, being in the back lobe.
Brendan1
27-01-2010, 02:09
Not bad here, considering the distance from Santa Maria Galeria! :)
Brendan1
28-01-2010, 00:16
Pretty good again, I'll not complain. :)
Brendan1
29-01-2010, 17:11
Propagation continues to be very nice to my QTH. :)
Brendan1
29-01-2010, 23:35
Looks like the transmitter coughed just before 2306UTC. Otherwise, excellent!
Brendan1
31-01-2010, 00:15
100% perfect today.
Brendan1
01-02-2010, 01:09
Another perfect day and log!
Brendan1
06-02-2010, 15:58
Have missed the last few days, but this log makes up for it! Excellent propagation from EU to NA.
Brendan1
07-02-2010, 02:21
Somewhat down on quality today, but I guess that's because of the solar activity. Not a bad thing actually, but it did hurt the numbers a little. :o
Brendan1
07-02-2010, 23:58
A hit today around 2324, maybe the transmitter dropped very briefly?
Brendan1
08-02-2010, 23:58
No hits, just variable propagation today.
Brendan1
10-02-2010, 02:06
Still a little unsteady propagation at this hour, but good otherwise.
Brendan1
10-02-2010, 23:41
The ionosphere appears to be behaving better.
Brendan1
12-02-2010, 02:51
Today the antenna was pointed towards South America, and not Europa. Upon returning from work, I rotated it back towards Europe at approximately 2319. A very fluttery, polar path look to the waterfall today, and the variable graph confirms that propagation was off.
Brendan1
12-02-2010, 23:34
Very good reception once again. The antenna was pointed towards the EU for the entire log today. The SNR is down slightly, which is linked to the current solar weather in my opinion.
Brendan1
14-02-2010, 02:16
An excellent log today, virtually no errors at all.
Brendan1
15-02-2010, 00:55
Nice propagation today, virtually all my logs were at or near 100% decode.
Brendan1
15-02-2010, 23:40
Extremely poor today! The A index is 14 right now, the K index is 4, and I think that is what did it. No joy.
Brendan1
18-02-2010, 01:07
Dream crashed yesterday, so I had nothing.
Today, everything worked exactly as planned. :)
Brendan1
19-02-2010, 00:13
Quite poor today, with only a little audio decoding.
Brendan1
20-02-2010, 00:41
Much better than yesterday.
Brendan1
21-02-2010, 01:01
Nice propagation again today.
Brendan1
21-02-2010, 23:52
For all the talk of DRM not being a DX mode, VR does an impressive job from Italy to NA! At nearly 10000 km, they come through day after day. :)
Brendan1
23-02-2010, 00:08
Great log today.
Brendan1
26-02-2010, 23:47
Dream worked okay today, so the log came out well. Excellent in fact.

A perfectly flat decoding line: first one in a very long time. Very steady conditions today, excellent audio of course.

Not perfect, but very close once again. Okay, the decoding was perfect, but the line isn't flat.

Propagation seems to be off tonight - I've not seen it like this in some time. :(

Very bad today, only 40% decoding. Worst log since I re-started logging VR.

Today, very good signal from Santa Maria di Galera.
In a text message :" Regular DRM transmissions for Europe on 1611 KHz and SW 7320 KHz..."
Any e-mail to report this transmission a Vatican Radio ? For the info thanks

Rafael - I don't know of any email addresses for QSL purposes, sorry!
Better today here, although not back up to 100% yet.

Very good once again, although there was some obvious fluctuation to the log yesterday.

The ionosphere is behaving itself once again.

Only fair reception today, the solar indices are looking a little low right now.

Excellent today, a very steady signal.

Rather rough tonight, looks like the solar indices shifted upwards today, and the A index is rather high.
Brendan1
11-03-2010, 23:48
The solar flux is up by six points to 84, the A index is 10, while the K is 2. Better than yesterday...and it shows.

Almost time for the spring frequency change. Time for 9755? :)
Brendan1
13-03-2010, 23:52
Yes, the frequency is getting to be too low. Fairly good, but the fluctuations are something else, and it's only likely to keep going downhill as the season progresses.

Hmmm, I think some electrical QRM killed decoding today. I hope it doesn't keep up.

QRM it is, but it is a Cuban bubble jammer on 7365 attempting to jam Radio Marti. As far as I can tell, Radio Marti is not even on the frequency, in fact I can detect no analog carrier whatsoever. It would seem to be a case of Cuba sticking to some previous schedule of Radio Marti, which RM doesn't seem to be following anymore. More like a bureaucracy continuing to tread a predetermined path, not realizing the path is no longer there... :(
If not for that 5kHz wide bubble jammer, it would have been very acceptable reception today.
