It's just a matter of AM interference. Excellent when the channel is clear!
Hi,
Surprise, surprise. Actually not the first time I have "seen" RNZI, but the first time it was possible to follow the programme. Strong AM on both sides in the beginning, but the second attempt from 1030 UTC onward gave a surprising result. From 1125 UTC until closedown it was great!
Terje
Hi all.
Perfect signal but 0940 to 1100UTC AM on 9865Khz. CDA 93%ok and MAX SNR 29.6db !!!
:)
Hi.
Perfect signal today also, but small problem for TWR from Guam start on 9865Khz. 0930-1100UTC.on AM.
:)
Hi,
Back to "normal conditions" here. Very little signal that is. Before 08 UTC reception is impossible because of co-channel AM in Korean from UK. It was possible to listen between 12 and 13 UTC. The plot looks worse than the actual reception.
Unfortunately there were Chinese language broadcasts (both from Guam?) -5 kHz before 11 UTC and +5 kHz after 12 UTC.
Terje
Looks like this was not the ideal freq/time for West Coast of the USA today!

Not bad considering that this transmission is for the Pacific region and I was driving 160 km/h on the autobahn and finally stopped in the middle of a BP oil refinery. :D
Hi all.
Very good signal in 185min, but 1200UTC start very strong AM station on 9875Khz. This stop RNZI.

Longer report today, sometimes very good, max. SNR over 32dB!
AM interferences:
08:00 - on top
09:30 - 5 kHz down
12:00 - 5 kHz up
Hello,
nearly perfect on 9870 kHz. Now I switched over to 7145 - on this frequency some more drop outs because of splatter from up and down.
Bernd, DF9RB
Hi,
You can see the signal was rising steadily until CZ started just before 11 UTC with a splattery transmitter +10 kHz from RNZI. When they left, decoded audio came instantly from down under. At 12 UTC new QRM popped up, but did not interfere much here today. Actually, it was easy listening most of the time.
Terje
Hi,
RNZI in Helsinki, pretty good.

Not too bad for not being in the target area.

Hi all.
Her is log of 238min . today. Very good prppagation and nice program from RNZI. Only QRM from Guam AM . Very strong S9+10db and stabile signal.

Switched between DREAM 1.6.1 and older WinRadio DRM 1.2.5.
Somehow could not merge the txt files with the slightly different format, so here a little wider graphic. :D
Obviously the newer DREAM decodes much better than the older WinRadio version, even when using the integrated notchfilter.
Hi all,
a short log from today.

Hi.
LOg from start 0800UTC to 1200UTC. This time start very strong AM on 9875Khz and RNZI brake down. 225MIn.
Hi,
Better reception than what the calculation gives.
Nice to pick up Radio New Zealand International - The Voice of the Pacific, as the text msg reads.
Best around midnight (in New Zealand ;) ) unless there is no interference (including self made one).
BtW an indoor mounted (!) DX-10 antenna was used.

48712 Gescher-B525-A43-A1-59368 Werne in northwestern Germany.
Here also problems after 09:30 UTC with interference from AM 5kHz down.
I don't know what happened with the transmission schedule.Didn't they say 9890kHz at this time? 9870kHz starting from 1200 UTC is plagued with severe ajacent channel interference which is a religious program of chinese language.
BTW: I have done some tinkering with Dream decoding algorithm, otherwise the successfully decoded audio frame would be even fewer.
Hi
Very good signal from RNZI today in 9890kHz
Hi all.
I tune in on this new freq , 1010UTC , so log only 49min.
Transmission stop 1100UTC.
Very strong and stabile signal S9+10db . And total clear freq.
After 1100 UTC I move to 9870 and now was RNZI on this freq.
But I have now very strong AM on 9865 and 9875 .
Strong signal (S9) here in South East China, but long IR. Sorry for the period between 1150 UTC to 1155 UTC as the two verticle line has shown. During that period I used the magnetic electric oven (1.8 kW) to boil soming drinking water and that oven is less than 5 meters away from my receiver antennas!
Starting from 1200 UTC there is adjacent channel interfernce as usual but conditions are in my favor tonight compared with last night.
Hi all.
Very bad propagation for strong AURORA, Level 9.
See picture from NOAA18.
It was amazing that I received station the farthest as possible on earth from my home- 17550 km. Today is much stronger.
Hi.
Very good propagation on 9870Khz today.Log 50min.

Hi all.

Hi,
The signal rose slowly and from about 1125 UTC the decoded audio was almost perfect until QRT. I used two receivers sharing the Long Wire Antenna.
The adjacent channels were very clean today. Some AM 5 kHz up, but the weak signal caused no harm.
Hi all.
Strong signal from RNZI but sorry for strong AM also on 9870.CDA 80% ok from log 34min.

Wintertime is RNZI time here... :)
Did some tests with my two inverted L antennas at start.
The northeastern L as antenna and the northwestern L grounded turned out to be the best combination.
At 12:00 UTC AM interference from both sides +/-5 kHz started.
Good audio with that low bitrate.
Semi-attended log:
When log starts RNZI and an AM-Station used same channel.
The RNZI-Signal was not so weak at Log-beginning. Signal rising up 1200 UTC.
Later here also two AM-Signals +- 5 KHz.
Very good signal today. Strong AM come up on 9870 after 1030UTC.
Hi,
Not an everyday catch in my part of the world, but today it started with good reception and good music by Pink Floyd at 10:22 UTC. 52 minutes later, 11:14 the signal was more or less lost. A total of 6 % CDA, seems low - I had audio despite that the ' audio LED' was red.
Some received txt msg:
Please send reception reports using QSL option at www.rnzi.com
Radio New Zealand International - The Voice of the Pacific!
3 hours of reception at Paris.

Interesting comparing the results between Fritz, Sixten and me: I can't get anything here because of a 30-40 dB stronger signal on the channel. My luck are the 40 minutes from 12 UTC which are very good considering the distance. :) :)

I realized that the programme continued and between 11:02 and 12:25 the CDA was 98%. From that point nearby QRM set in and from 12:40 it became completely impossible to decode anything at all.

Hi all,
quite good signal from RNZI today..
Hi,
AM station at the same frequency is a big problem. Without this interference the result had been much better.
Hi,
There are two interferences on this frequency. Strong AM 9870kHz and also rather strong 9873kHz. I'll add next post the DRM spectrum and the audio of this 9873kHz.
Here is the DRM spectrum of these two interferences and the 5 seconds audio of the 9873kHz.
Hi,
rather good after 09:56 UTC. Still problem of interferences. There is also NRZI AM transmission at 9765 kHz. It is interesting to listen both transmission at the same time.
Hi,
ok. I'll include also the spectrum of 9870 DRM + 9765 AM at the same moment. The zip file is 5 seconds audio of DRM and AM again at the same time.
Hi all.

And this F1 station give QRM from 9868 to 9880 and S9+20db.
Hello all,
good today in South East Germany. At 10:57 according to their schedule the TX-antenna direction was changed from 0 degree (1st log) to 325 degrees (2nd log). 320 degrees would be best for my location. The log shows no changes in SNR between 10:57 and 11:00.
No RTTY-QRM here, around 11:30 two AM-stations (5 kHz down and in the center) became stronger.

The rubbish on 9873 was clearly seen here too. Around 10:40 it had disappeared, and only a carrier on the RNZI frequency continued. The best reception here is between 12:00 and 12:40 UTC.
The overnight 9870 KHz unattended reception report.
The usual 40 minutes slot became a bit shorter today due to a very strong AM station 5 kHz down.
The reception was pretty good today until the co-channel AM popped up as usual at 12:38 UTC
More or less the same as yesterday. The signal was quite strong in the beginning, but there was heavy Fading. Towards the end of the log the signal gradually got weaker. Then the AM blocker popped up - as usual.
Last night's 9870KHz unattended reception report.
Rather good signal. AM station 9870kHz interference was rather low (only 10 dB over DRM) and 9873 kHz RTTY was off.

Not very good today, so some time for an antenna test:
20 meter high aluminium pole with two inverted L antennas, one to the northwest, one to the northeast.
The first half of the diagram was taken with both wires driven by a 1:4 balun in dipole configuration, the second half shows the result with the northwestern wire connected to ground and the northeastern wire still connected to the balun.
Not much at all today. Usually this segment is much better.

What a difference a day makes!
Very bad compared to yesterday, weaker and signal sounds a little like aurora.

Not so strong but good reception and good content.

Today again not so good.
FritzWue
24-02-2008, 11:22
Similar conditions with even lower SNR today
Very difficult copy due to not so strong signal and relatively high bit rate. AM signals scattered 5kHz apart across the spectrum make it even harder to receive.

Again not enough signal strength today.

RNZI is coming through in the early morning here now but is blocked by an AM station starting at 07:00 UTC on the same frequency, sounded like Bejing or so.

Hi John,
that really looks strange!?
Very bad impulse response here today, so low snr, looks like this here behind the SDR:

Hi,
Despite that I'm not in the target area, the Pacific, I had an amazingly good signal from RNZI! Especially between 08:27 and 08:56 when CDA reached 93 %.
Some of the received txt msg:

Hi all.
RNZI is back on the radio, but after 0900 krazz DRM for AM start. very strong.

Hi all.

100% audio from this 45min.
:) :)
Hi,
A very good start at 09:00 UTC, but after some 30 minutes the signal was very unreliable. So a total of 60 minutes listening gave a CDA of 47 %. Time: 08:59 - 09:59 UTC.
A report from the center of France.
Not to bad !! I stopped the recoding at 10:58 TU. But after, I still had the signal from the NZ, with some strong stations around.

Hi all.
Log only 38min .B4 AM start AIR on 9870 very fine signal, SNR up over 26db .
:) :) :)
Log 60min. from 0950 with AIR in back ground , this give CDA 99% ok. Only max SNR 22db. Her is picture from input and SNR also.
Hi all.
Good signal today but after 0900 AM start and drop outs. Log 157min. CDA 97% ok.
Hi all.
Good signal today to 0900 Am start. :)
9 MHz works much better than 17 MHz here in Japan. I almost got 2 hours (until someone switched on the plasma TV)

hi all
very good condtion today.
DE JA2QDX M.Ito
Hi Mitsuru-san and all,
9 MHz works fine here just outside the Shizuoka City center, but as soon as someone decides they want to watch (plasma) TV you can forget about logging... Grrr...
The distance to TX is not correct due to a bug in my prgr that refuses longitudes >99 deg. Correct should be 9097 km. The AZ should be OK.
PS: the >100 deg bug has been solved!!!!
FritzWue
16-11-2008, 12:18
Also good here at 18340 km distance! :D
The signal was a bit weak at the beginning here in "my" Japan, but it soon got a lot better. I got 99 minutes until someone wanted to watch the tube. Or, plasma that was... I bet 5 meter wire is a lot less than what FritzWue is using...
Not so good today here in Japan. This ends my logging from this end of the world until next year. Sayonara.
Hi all.
Very good signal today but also strong AM from 0857 UTC . S9+10db .
First test of my IC-R70 on RNZI.:) :)
Hi all.
Very good signal this morning. :) :) :) S9+10db .
0914 start AM on 9870 this give small problem but now start AM on 9865 also this give more problem for dropout. Log 153min.
Hi all.
Very good signal today, propagation for CRI also good. Log 130min . CDA only 99.26% ok !!!
