View Full Version : OldieStar Radio on 1575 kHz
Hi all,
new DRM station in Germany: OldieStar Radio on 1575 kHz from Burg.
See screenshot.
73, Klaus
Transmission times in DRM on 1575 kHz are 0800-1400 UT with 20 kW and 2200-0400 UT with 100 kW.
At the other times the frequency is used by VoR in AM.
73, Klaus
Strong signal, but an impulse response as long as the chineese wall. They use the wrong antenna type at night. Around 12 db and no audio. No AM Interference is visible.
Bad results, not very strong signal and co-channel interference in the last hour this morning, also something was wrong with the audio feed!
Simone
Quite a bad result this morning with a long impulse response and in addition on-channel interference which could not be nulled.
OFDM symbols were transmitted but without audio.
See screenshot for spectrum, WMER and impulse response.
Roland
And here is the log.
Roland
OFDM symbols were transmitted but without audio.
Roland
Hi Roland,
there was audio but very low level see attachment, with speakers set to maximum I could hear some music.
Simone
Hi Roland,
there was audio but very low level see attachment, with speakers set to maximum I could hear some music.
Simone
Well, I didn't hear any with speakers adjusted for normal but low audio levels but I was also busy trying to find an optimum loop position but to no avail...
I have read that an NVIS antenna is used and the results are exactly of the kind that I expected. I think one should forget about DRM and NVIS antennas, they just don't fit together.
Roland
Not much, but a signal for me:
At night, the impulse response looks even worse than it did in the morning when it was not completely dark anymore.
Not much audio can be decoded from a signal with so many echoes.
If audio can be decoded, it is only barely audible even if all volume sliders are fully up here.
Roland
Not worth further logging.
Roland
Bad results again, a weak signal and co-channel interference.
Still the audio problem with extremely low audio level.
Simone
This is what I get with my Aircoil:
:( but nothing to be heard :(
WDR on 1593 works better - and is in similar distance with less power ...
Reception of the DRM signal as such was much better than on the days before. However, interference was often strong and although the interfering carrier was only a few dB above the averaged DRM signal, it still did cause a deep notch in the WMER vs carrier plot.
A lower bitrate at a better protection level (B/A = 0/0) might improve the situation.
The impulse response was considerably shorter than on the days before, it still had a lot of peaks but their amplitudes fell off much faster than before.
Were there any changes on the antenna used at night or was it just a change in propagation that made the difference?
The audio problem was unchanged so it was / is still impossible to listen to normal audio.
Roland
Not too bad in the last 30min this morning when I tried to listen, but still after 3 days audio levels are so low that listening is nearly impossible!
Simone
Finally with audio!
But audio quality ought to be better, far too much compression is being used with audio pumping when the compressor (it often sounds a lot more like a limiter!) tries to achieve a constant output level. There is also distortion in high audio frequencies with music but especially during voice jingles. All in all an awful sound!
Here is a screenshot showing how it looked tonight shortly after midnight local time. At 460 km distance from Burg, the impulse response seems to be sufficiently short for mode B. However there is sometimes interference from an on-channel station and it is causing dropouts. The loop antenna was directed almost at true north pointing directly towards Burg.
I wonder if Oldiestar Radio is affiliated with the RTL group. The jingles are very similar to those on RTL and they are of the same style, also the same voice is used.
Signal strength is not bad, but conditions also seem to be rather good today, at least in northerly directions.
Roland
Here is an audio sample of a jingle which demonstrates how much audio is distorted. In reality, the distortion sounds even worse but the MP3 encoding process at this bitrate is a bit gracious in this respect.
Roland
And here is a 70 minutes report. Over the course of logging, the signal got weaker, the channel's impulse response often looked worse and interference became stronger.
Roland
EDIT: Report file replaced with one which also shows distance information
Good results in the last 40min this morning, the new configuration (using mode B, 18.4 kbps) seems to work much better, also audio levels have improved, audio quality could be better.

Most dropouts here are caused by the co-channel interferer, IR rather long at night sometimes but not causing problems.

Again audio problems this morning, low level only one channel

Daytime log, most time unattended.
Too much audio level and compression, hissing and ringing in background on voices.
Jingles and voices sound like being mixed for AM broadcasting and not for near FM quality.
FritzWue

At least with this hit one stereo channel is definetively missing!
( only 96kbps for file size reasons )
Not really good through the night with co-channel interference despite my directional antenna. Interestingly, there is also a weak and slowly fading signal right now at full daylight and at a distance of 464 km.
If I were to listen to this station inside the target area, the heavily compressed and distorted audio on voice announcements would definitely make me turn the receiver off instantly! It hurts in the ears!
Roland
Not bad in the last 45min early this morning.
Simone
Observations:
- absolutely no audio on the signal, not even at the highest volume setting
- an always long impulse response, often with longer delayed peaks hardly falling off in amplitude over time; much worse than on the signal from Langenberg
- on-channel interference
- a number of TX interruptions, see screenshot of waterfall diagram for an example
- a much worse result than with the signal from Langenberg at about the same distance.
Roland
Also no audio when I tried to listen in the last half hour this morning :(

A short period on the wire antenna.
No fun, modulation failed several times.
Again no audio this morning :(
Simone
Too much interference from an on-channel station.
The announcements and the jingles should better be removed altogether since
- the voices are distorted, most likely because of too much audio compression and
- because they are totally irrelevant.
EVERY listener will know which frequency he has tuned his receiver to, so he doesn't have to be told ("auf Mittelwelle 1575")! Besides, in future DRM receivers, the frequency will be totally irrelevant to the user!
Roland
Quite good in the last 25min this morning, and with audio :)!

During daytime attenuation at the upper end of the mediumwave band the signal just is not strong enough here for a good result.
In Munich, reception is a bit shaky with short dropouts. Audio quality seems to have impoved, at least the announcer's voice is not as compressed as it used to be. Jingles however are still compressed and sound distorted.

Many dropouts early this morning mostly caused by interference.

Normally I have given up to try medium wave reception at my QTH due to unfavourite conditions. However last night I gave 1575 kHz a try, with results as shown. I guess the famous MorphyRichards radio wouldn't bring out a tone under these conditions.
Neither did my PC but for different reason: As was told in a german radio forum the cable for audio feed has been damaged.
Isn't it nice what you can do with an excavator ? :D

I think this is the first time I logged this station. The overnight log resulted in:
95.3% CDA from 2202-2359, max. SNR 29.1 dB at 2314 in Mode B, P-Stereo
75.8% CDA from 0000-0159, max. SNR 27.8 dB at 0058 in Mode D
97.5% CDA from 0159-0358, max. SNR 30.9 dB at 0241 in Mode B, P-Stereo
In the beginning I noticed that the drop-outs were caused by a co-channel carrier. The rest was unattended.
