View Full Version : RNZI on 9440 kHz
Hi All
As of 0500 UTC June 4, RNZI has started up on 9440 kHz using 16.5 kbps AAC SBR mono audio. I'll add the log plot later, but I'm only seeing 8-9 dB here 300 km away.
I'm not sure if anyone has posted it here yet, but here is the RNZI DRM schedule effective June 4:
04 June 2006 - 03 September 2006
UTC NZ Time kHz Mode Primary Target
1300 - 1650 0100 - 0450 6095 DRM All Pacific, Fiji, Niue, Samoa, Cook Islands
1651 - 1850 0451 - 0650 7145 DRM All Pacific, Fiji, Niue, Samoa, Cook Islands
1851 - 2250 0651 - 1035 13730 DRM All Pacific

Hi all,
I got about less than 50% audio.
There were no audios beginning.
7145KHZ is only syc there is very very strong signal on 7140KHZ.
The strong signal is coming from N.K.

Hi everyone!
I was able to copy RNZI on 9440 quite well here in the southwestern US. I've attached the screen view of my reception period. DRM was actually far superior to RNZI analog on 9615 at the same time: DRM must be using much more power!
Good, copiable DRM signals are hard to get here in the US, and RNZI now has one of the best around. I can hardly ever get RCI from Sackville (on any frequency), so at last my investment in DRM can pay off!
Regards,
Brendan

I originally posted this report on the RNZI 7145 thread by mistake.
Great reception here in the southwestern US. RNZI analog almost inaudible, but DRM was much, much stronger - higher output power?

Excellent copy on 31 meters tonight. Nothing of 7145 at 0659Z, but RNZI analog can be heard on 6095, very weak.

Last night was excellent! I only logged 30 minutes or so, but I know it would have been good for the entire period. Raised the antenna to about 4 meters or so, and it's now clear of the house - that seems to have made a difference.

About as good a DRM broadcast as you'll find in NA. Still going strong, I just want to go to bed! :) The bellbirds of the interval signal at the beginning of the broadcast were incredibly clear - almost like being in the forest with them.

Hi,
Traces of DRM here, but again we're "blessed" by TRT +20 kHz with their "clothespin-on-the-nose" modulation, splattering 30 kHz in all directions. There is AM -10 kHz also plus a lot of QRN this morning.

Not a good evening - 9440 is usually the best DRM signal for me and this was a very poor night. Two track monitoring again- both Dream and DRMSWR running in parallel, and DRMSWR did a better job until it all went down the drain.

RNZI did well, but I shut down when the SNR got too low to decode.
As of 1707Z, RNZI is still going on 9440. Was supposed to have switched to 7145 by now. A weak SNR, only about 6-6.5 dB.

Here is the log for the first 67 minutes or so of 9440. Still on, but it's time for bed.
This was being sent at 10.08 kBps - very slow. But that is not the real issue: this was the nastiest audio I've heard on DRM. There was a "skipping" quality to the audio, somewhat like a bad scratch on a vinyl record causing the record to skip. Segments of audio were being "spliced" back in a few milliseconds out of order. You can follow the presentation, but it is not very pleasant. Very low fidelity as well. Dream only showed about 3 kHz of audio bandwidth.
Also, despite being about the highest SNR broadcast I've ever decoded, the audio kept dropping out every so often. Combined with the audio problem, it was a little tortured listening to it.

hi all,
I have for gotten to take LOG file.
as you know mudulation has chaned to 16QAM from 64QAM.
I was able to ghet audio with low SNR.
normaly I got sound after 05Hrs UTC.
But today I got audio before 05Hrs UTC.
PNG file is only ending few mins.
I guess RNZI changed bourate and modulation to
10.08Kbops/16QAM from 64QAM from -
transition on 15720KHZ of today.
This is the 9440 kHz reception log for the night ( I was asleep). The graph does indicate the lower voice bit rate as mentioned by Brendan and Mitsuru.

Not a bad report - although I don't know what is causing the dropouts every 10 minutes or so. Since they are (apparently) evenly spaced, it may be something artificial causing them. I will have to investigate to see if I can find the source.

Looks like there is a pattern to the dropouts and I noticed the same thing on 6095 later in the night/morning. Looks like (from other posters) RNZI might be having a little exciter problem again.

Not too bad, and it looks like the 'dips' are slightly diminished over previous observations. Signal strength was excellent however, and that may kept the dips from being so obvious.

Superb reception of RNZI's signon (with the call of the New Zealand bellbird) at 0459 and then the ending of a program about the intersection of art and science. News at 0501 followed.
Flawless reception in Detroit, MI with SNR at 20 to 22 dB using TenTec RX-350, Butternut ham vertical and DRM Software Radio 2.0.
Is there a tutorial on how to create the PNG files that I see people posting up here?

The PNG files are generated by DreamCalc, a freeware program found at this site: http://home.arcor.de/carsten.knuetter/drm.htm
Carsten has done a great job with this program, it is now on version 6.2. He is also a regular contributor to the reception reports as well, and is very helpful.
