Hi all,
DRM tests from WDR station Langenberg on 1593 kHz. This frequency was in use for WDR till the end of 1993, later Radio Free Europe from Holzkirchen, now back in Langenberg.

Just in time for the FIFA world cup, WDR started their DRM transmissions from Langenberg today.
Currently playing classical music, high bitrate, good audio quality.
Edit: Meanwhile they are reporting from the stadium in München.

Here is my first report, some dropouts but great audio quality!
Interesting mix concerning the programming, classical music and reports from the world cup!

And here is my over night report. Quite good in darkness.
Here is a report from half past midnight till loss of signal in daylight.
WMER was always higher at the upper part of the spectrum, there were some problems from the channel below and during fading, an on-channel carrier could sometimes be seen. Since this is my first try on this frequency, my loop's position may not have been at its optimum so far.

Only 65 km to TX, so no problem here at daytime except with local interference. Good audio. :)
Noise from some fluorescent tube light in the house reduced the snr in the beginning.
The programme is WDR 2 Klassik, the same (unwanted) material they had on DAB for some years until they switched to the regular WDR 2 programme......after the last DAB radios had disappeared in the shops here.

Very sad:
In good old times they were running several hundred kilowatts in AM with a big signal all over europe, now they do not even manage to transmit a readable signal at 65km distance. :mad:

Driving from 30926 Seelze near Hannover to 48712 Gescher via B441, A2, A30, A31.
Antenna pattern seems to be stronger to the east than to the north.
Boring programme material. :rolleyes:
Quite good in Munich tonight, there were a few short dropouts though.

Driving from 48712 Gescher at 65km distance to TX to Ibbenbueren via A31, A30.
This log shows the limitations of DRM on lower frequencies.
There was only a light thunderstorm and some electrostatic rain reducing the CDA to inacceptable 60%. 5kW simply is not enough, see my next report on 1296kHz.
Good results until 2330, but then conditions got worse for 1 hour, not sure what caused the problem, later again quite good.

An hour ending in the usual WDR 2 Klassik nonsense:
An interview programme with a jazz musician and classical music in between instead of the discussed jazz.
Multiple impulses already in the early evening despite the short distance.
Good results last night using the Sony radio/ ferrite antenna.

Driving from 48712 Gescher to near 49565 Bramsche via A31, A30, A1.
Signal fading north of A30/A1 crossing. Maybe it's some directivity of my antenna on the left back of the car. I somehow get better results with signals coming from the front or the right side of the car than with signals from the back or the left.
Tuned frequency to 1296 kHz near Bramsche for comparison.
Quite good again last night.

Considering that this log was done by DRM Software Radio, I would call this a nearly perfect result.

SNR also seems to be somewhat limited at the TX.

Today (01.08.2006) WDR Langenberg does not use 1593 kHz for DRM. Does anyone know why?

The signal from Langenberg has it's ups and downs in Munich. Multipath effects are very strong with an often bumpy spectrum with two equally large main peaks in the impulse response but also with a long impulse response during moments of fading.

Signal was absolutely unusable here in Münster because of the violation of the guard intervall. Mode B would be neccessary at night. IR looks similar to DW 3995 ! More dropouts than music. The signal itself is strong enough. The AM transmission of Langenberg does not make any problems.

They will never learn that even at 24kbps classical music does not really sound great.

Unattended overnight log, strong selective fading and dual pulse on the loop in the morning:
The impulse response looked pretty long and there was interference from an on-channel station as well as from the channel below.
Nevertheless, the result isn't too bad for the bitrate and the power used at Langenberg.

Perhaps too optimistic, but there was decoded audio periodically. The signal faded slowly, which caused the dropouts.

Unattended log with a big dropout under the roof of a fuel station in Nottuln.
Great results in Langenberg last night, the strong signal was no problem for the DWT and Degen TG33 antenna, also no problem with the Roberts MP40, excellent audio quality as always on this transmission.

Rather good results at daytime for my area, only a few minor dropouts, but for the sports reports a lower bitrate/ mono would be sufficient.

In the report, the dropouts look more severe than they really were, I still received 93% of all audio frames.

Hello to all,
WDR comes in "well" here, but like all MW transmissions I get here (except BBC 1296), there is much fading, so listening is not possible "commercially". Audio sounds great, as long as music only consists in piano and strings. When there are other instruments, at this bitrate DRM can sound very bad.
This is really a test... Classical music, then traffic informations, then classical, then football match start, then again classical... A very tight mix !

No stable reception due to noisy surrounding (NDR Info on 972 kHz @ 2,3 km distance only!). However encouraging results. To my humble opinion sound is great! My external active PC speakers let it sound like FM.
Signal is much weaker those from Orfordness on 1296 or Vatican Radio on 1530 kHz, also bitrate is high and the impulse response is not so nice which results in dropouts.

A short report with mixed results.

Really bad results last night.
Also bad results at me. The reason seems not to be the signal strenght but a very problematic IR. When I checked it I could see three pulses, the second of which was some time the biggest and the third came with great delay, so I guess that's why DREAM lost Sync all the times.
2nd try. I stopped logging for the following reasons:
On one hand after sunset signal is strong enough for audio, peaking at approx 23 dB on my ferrite rod. Also IR is o.k. today.
On the other hand there is strong fading of more than 10 dB. The worst thing is on-channel interference, apparently from Roumania ( I would estimate it in AM as O=2).

Got some broken reception here in Luxembourgn around 5:10 UTC with a slightly modified Morphy Richards receiver (indoor reception with build in ferrite rod), SNR ranging from 6 to 15 db. At 5:30 strong co-channel interference.
