View Full Version : DW Sines on 3995 KHz
Hi all
From today, at Monday, Wednesday and friday, Sines will be on 3995 KHz, from 23:00 to 03:55 UTC. During this test transmissions from Sines, Wertachtal will be off.
Hi Carlos,
an extremely strong signal before 2300, good results then with a weaker signal during the transmission from Sines, later the usual problem in the early morning from Wertachtal.
Simone
Hi Carlos,
Very good results last night. When Sines took over, the SNR raised 4dB and more. And it is good to have 17.2 kbps p-stereo the whole night. No problems whith this bitrate. After Wertachtal took over the signal got lost for 1 hour in the early morning. Looks like a good solution for the 3995, at least for last night.
Ups, now with corrected max. SNR :D

Hi all,
Here's the unattended last night's log. It is obvious that the SNR from Sines is a bit higher.
John.
Hi,
Here is last night's log as it looked in Switzerland.
At 20 UT the S-meter showed a steady S9 +20 dB
At 21 UT it was still a steady S9 +20 dB
At 22 UT also and
at 2325 UT it showed a steady S9 +10 dB.
In the morning just before 07 UT there was slight QSB and the meter swayed between S9 +5 and S9 +15 dB.
Plus the usual fade-out during the hour before sunrise 0425-0530 UTC.
Terje
Hmm, they are back to telephony quality:( Quite high SNR in the night. There was no brak at 23:00, so I'm not quite sure if there was a take over from Sines this night, but SNR would say that.

Hi all,
Bad propagation conditions last night and bad weather conditions also. The result cannot be compared with my previous ones, there were much better ones. The log file is in two parts for better resolution, the second part is here. The SNR got higher much later than usual. See the png.
John.
Hi,
Yesterday I monitored 3,995 MHz from 1625 UTC until 0831 UTC this morning. I split the log in three parts, two for Wertachtal and one for Sines. Here is the report for Sines.
Terje
Hello to all,
This night confirmed my first attempt of wednesday to catch Sines : with the long wire of the DWT, reception here is really bad. Even while letting the laptop running on batteries only, the SNR is not good and stable enough to provide a decent listening. I will try hopefully next week with new antennas.
1st screen capture shows friday night log only
2nd screen capture shows comparison with thursday night

Hi all,
seems there is more fading on the signal from Sines, also signal strength is lower, good decoding but low bitrate last night

Hi all,
Here is the part 2. Except for the usual reception problems, due to the sunrise, the rest was a nearly excellent result and with a much higher SNR than in part 1, which reached up to 32.5 dB max.
According to the DW, the transmission was scheduled from 2300 to 0355, but, since the log was unattended, I cannot tell when it was stopped from Sines and continued from Wertachtal, there is no trace for the switching (was it so perfect?) If this is wrong please correct me. Thanks.
John.
Hi all,
good results last night, signal from Sines is always weaker than from Wertachtal
Simone
Hi all,
the signal strength from Sines seems to be a bit weaker, but also more stable and still very strong. And the SNR is about 4 dB higher than from Wertachtal. Sines shoulb be able to change to 17.4 kbps. This telephone quality is not nice.
Hi all,
I split the log into three overlapping parts, two for Wertachtal and the middle for Sines. It was a striking difference both in SNR and signal strength just at switchover at 2300 UTC, and the S-meter rose to S9 +15 dB. Stable conditions during the transmission and at 0355 UTC the switchover to Germany instantly resulted in much worse reception.
Here is my log, part 2 and a screen shot of the SNR and Decoded Audio just at the swichover at 23 UTC:

Hi all,
Here's the last night's result. The SNR is much higher from Sines.
John.
Hi all,
good results from Sines last night.
Simone
I think, that the graph speaks for its self. Sines did a brilliant job last night. Please give us Sines when it is dark and Wertachtal at daytime. And stop this terrible telephone quality on this frequency.
Hi Carsten
We canot change anything on this transmission, because all the parameters are made in Bonn, and send us via satellite in MDI format. So all changes in BR should be made in Bonn and not in Sines.
Hi,
Interesting results last night. Very bad conditions from Germany about 200 km from here, but perfect conditions from Portugal. Cheers!
Terje
Hi Carlos and all,
again a brilliant job from Sines after a delayed start last night. No reception was possible from Wertachtal after 21:30UTC. But Sines had a very high average SNR last night.
Hi Carlos,
strange results from 2300- 2323 ( a delayed start?), quite good results from Sines then
Simone
Hi all,
good results from Sines, now also transmitting on Sundays?
Simone
Hi Simone
TKS for the report. Yes. We are now also transmitting Sunday. In accordance with new schedule this 3995 KHz transmissions will finish from Sines, in 26-03....
Hi Carlos and all,
Why finish? That is bad news... The reception from Sines is perfect here! See the enclosed log from last night.
Terje
Hi Carlos, Hi all,
the difference between Wertachtal and Sines is a bit more extreme in my location. SNR jumps from 13 to 30 dB:eek:
I agree with Terje. Sines works perfect on this frequency and should continue. Wertachtal is just a waste of energy most of the time. But I guess that there is still a lack of transmitters or antennas in Sines...
But how is the performance of Sines on this frequency in Portugal/Spain?
Hi Carlos, all,
sorry to hear you are not going to continue with this transmission from Sines, seems to be more reliable here than Wertachtal. Last night again perfect results from Sines. Btw what about reception of Wertachtal in Portugal?
Simone
Hi all
Now the good news!...We just received a new schedule from DW. Transmissions on 3995 will continue from Sines, but with one hour more. This transmission will be from 22:00 to 2:59.:)
Hi Simone and Carsten
Wertachtal in Portugal have a strong signal (up to 60 dBuV)and a SNR about20/25 dBs of course, but like in Germany only after the sunset, when the F1 and F2 layer disappear, and the propagation open for Europe on this QRG.
Simone and Carsten and all
(continuation of the previous message :p )
Wertachtal is very useful to listen DRM in 3995 KHz in Portugal and Spain. During the time, when I`m working in the station between 16:00 to 24:00 I normally tune Wertachtal in the monitor station receiver, which is a DT700 from Fraunhofer, and the reception is usually very good, with absolute no dropouts, very stable with low QSB, in spite of the strong field strenght in the station. The DT700 have a very rugged frontend and working fine in hight RF density environments .
Hi Carlos and all,
Well, the diagram speaks for itself. At least in Northern Switzerland the Sines transmission is a winner. At 2255 UTC W-tal brought S6 and no decoded audio, at switchover 2300 UTC the meter rose to S9 +15 dB and the SNR jumped up 15 dB. The rest was unattended. At 0625 UTC the signal from Germany was back to S9 +15 dB. In addition to the log I uploaded a picture of the SNR from approx. 2310 UTC.
Terje
Hi Carlos and all,
it is really amazing, the SNR jumps more than 20dB when Sines took over. The result is quite digitally. Wertachtal 0, Sines 1.
Hi Carlos, all,
great results from Sines last night
Simone
Hi all,
good results from Sines, some dropouts from Wertachtal before Sines started.
Simone
Hello to all,
Wertachtal is becoming bad each day after 2200 UT, but Sines here is even worse... each time I tried ! So I take it as a real result. Then it was not worth letting the computer logging all night long. SFN might be the best solution, or another 75m frequency to run Sines and Wertachtal in parrallel.
73, de Stephane
Even problems with Sines in the first hour last night, perfect in the morning.
Hi,
Sines is doing a good job, as usual.
Terje
Hi all,
good results again last night from Sines, problems in the early morning from Wertachtal
Simone
If I look only on the log I am not able to decide which Tx is on air or not. Seems I im a zone where it doesn't really matter. (Hower there is an audible difference...)
I experienced the same last summer with DW's tests of SFN on 7265 kHz.
3995 kHz is a BIG MYSTERY!!!!
Hi,
Just in time for Sines, tonight with 17,26 kbps +SBR and P-Stereo. Except for one hour the reception was very good. The end of Sines was also the end of the reception, at least until 0458 UTC, when something happened. Suddenly, within 4 minutes the reception was back to perfect! DW informed me about a change of transmitters at 0630 UTC (which I could not register yesterday  or today), when they switch from 200 kW to 40 kW. Or was this the case only during the Winter? But then you still wonder what happens just before 05 UTC  or did the conditions improve almost instantly?
This morning the configuration still was 17,26 kbps +SBR and P-Stereo, but with saturated modulation. Very muffled modulation...
Terje
PS: I posted this on both threads.
Hi all,

380 minutes of perfect reception. Only the mode changes made the decoded audio to show up as not 100%. I noticed at least three mode changes: At 1755 UTC I wrote down 11.64 kbps, after 18 UTC it changed to 14.56 kbps, and when I stopped the log just before 23 UTC it was 17.10 kbps and P-Stereo.

I noticed, that DW and some other BCs broadcast now with SBR even at lower audio bitrates than 16 kbps. Formerly it was not possible to do SBR with lower bitrates than 16.5 kbps. Perfect reception last night. The signal strength at the beginning and the end looks quite interesting. Today I heard live the bitrate change at 7 UTC from 17kbps to 14.5kbps. It was hardly noticable, just a short repetition was noticable. Formerly each change caused a complete loss of synchronisation. And 14.5 kbps mono with SBR sound really good for this low bitrate, at least much better than AM.
So I see, that there are still a lot of improvements behind the scenes, what I find quite promissing.

Hi all,
A very good to nearly excellent result until strong co-channel QRM started and affected the decoding.
An unattended almost two hours log. Looks perfect.

Hi all,
A problematic result for about 3 hours and low SNR, although the signal was around 40 dBuV.
Hi all
The signal to north was much better as can be seen from my log.

Problems until 23:30, then almost perfect.
Back to the DRB30, as you can see the wide front end has problems with interfering stations.

Hi all,
Curious results in this unattended log, many short dropouts. Around 01:00 the SNR jumped from 24 dB to 32 dB and then large SNR fluctuations started.

Hi all,
Here is the log of the last night's results.
Very good reception overnight. It's been awhile since I've been on the forum (since before 3995 went to Sines). I'm guessing the change to Stereo happened at that time?
Nearly eight hours with 100 % audio. The short drop around 20.45 was me switching the passband filters off and on, wanted to see if that would make any difference.

HI all,
Here is an unattended log of last night's results. Periods of good and bad results.
Today I tested my PC ( 1.8 GHz Celeron, 256 Mb RAM, AC97 on Board)
with a lot of parallel running programms.
I´m not sure, maybe thats the reason why the change of bitrate looks so wide ?!
But no problem for Deutsche Welle :D

Hi all,
A result for 3 hours. Some major problems around 20:35.
This unattended overnight Log was made with the Elektor-classic RX.
After 05:00 UTC the propagation are faded away.
Reception here in Austria.
Bad results last night when mode D was being used :(
Simone
Completely agree with Simone. Purely digital: 1-0-1-0-1-0. Now you hear it, now you don't.
Actually, I forgot to switch off the computer last night, so here is the sad result: At least in the morning with Mode D and S9 +20 on the meter (about +50 dBuV) there was practically no decoding. Only the segments with Mode B, probably 2032-2100, 2300-0000 and 0200-0300 were perfect.
Same problem. No audio possible when Mode D was used.
They even tested Prot. Level 2.
This night they tested Mode D again, but Prot. Level 0 (= 9,14 kBit). Terrible sound.
Some minutes later Mode B with good results.
Why not using 20 kHz bandwidth?

Hi all,
After 23:00 the result turned to perfect.
Wow! Just before 05 UTC when I entered the room I thought my PC was breaking down! A shearing noise, which luckily came from the loudspeakers - TERRIBLE. But the modulation became normal after the switch from 14.56 kbps to 17.10 kbps.
Otherwise very fine reception over almost 10 hours.
Hi.
Here is a screenshot of a DW reception made in Portugal, 220 km away from Sines.
