View Full Version : TDF on 3965 kHz Issoudun/ RFI
Hi Jaques!
Nice signal this morning in Frankfurt ! S9 but good SNR. Better than 3995 at this moment!
Hi,
Less good results here closer to the transmitter and later in the day, but maybe due to more local QRM (I had to make the laptop run on batteries only, switch off all the 'energy-saving' lights and other QRM sources in the house to obtain this result).
But very good indeed if it is really low-powered !
73, de Stephane
Salut Jacques,
I never managed to get more than this whenever I tried so far :(
But anyway it´s low power and not our target area, right now it is surprisingly good, S9+10, about 22dB SNR! but low audio bitrate.
Simone
Hi Carsten and Stéphane!
Well done, congratulations guys: first reports with only 1kW (linear transmitter with a 3CX 10000 tube and 31dB SNR) into a special 200 Ohms folded dipole at 0.25 Lambda with a take-off angle of 65° from Issoudun.
Not bad in Germany, not so good in Paris in the day; we were obliged to use 16QAM and 0.5 code rate in order to inprove realibility but Rfi programme is mainly speech and DW on 3995kHz is also using the same parameters...
Stéphane, please listen if possible at different hours of the day (or night!).
Regards / 73.
Jacques Gruson / F6AJW:)
Salut Simone,
Sorry, I have just sent my message and I got yours a few seconds after!
Keep on watching our frequency but we are really in QRP (low power) as I have no high power transmitter available for DRM; we have only one rotatable Alliss 2/2/0.3 antenna with a 500kW transmitter running AM only (which is QRO: high power !).
Regards.
jacques
Hi,
There was too much QRM during the day, DRM noise barely audible on my Sony ICF SW7600G. I tested reception at the end of the afternoon : not so bad for this power, almost 30% audio.
Some signal dropouts due to some work on my laptop. Between 16:50 and 17:05 computer audio was plugged to my hi-fi system... this caused lower SNR and almost no audio reception.
I will try again during the next days, also during the night, avoiding all other operations on my laptop :-) . After 17:00 UT might also be interesting.
73, de Stephane
Thanks Jacques, no problem, so far I never tried this frequency after dark (I guess I was too busy watching the interference from the Croatian DRM station on our MF AM transmission ;)), seems your frequency works quite good at night, here is an example of the impulse response a few minutes ago, will send a report later.
Simone
Hello,
not too bad for 1 kW in South East Germany. I think correctly adapted parameters help for quite reliable reception under this conditions. Signal about S8 or 40 µV on my EWE-Antenna. Station on 3955 9+40, on 3975 9+30. At 18:00 Radio Taiwan started with same signal strength in AM. Both neighboring station can be heard now with splatter.
73 Bernd, DF9RB
... and here is my report of the last 45min tonight

Hi Jacques,
log from this evening 19 to20 UTC. Quite bad results here because of co-channel interference and some very strong signals on 3975 and 3955.
Hi,
Just a little bit of audio at the time of logging then eventually subsumed by noise, but very impressive considering the low power. At the time of monitoring, a clear frequency for my location.
(the log states tx as Juelich??)
Best Regards
Paul T
Quite good in Munich.
The impulse response looks quite ok here at 00:12 UTC, see screenshot.
SNR is peaking at 23.5 dB.
Roland
Hi,
the plot looks a bit shaky but the dropouts were of very short duration.
Signal was not strong however but very good considering the relatively low power.

Hi Jacques,
really good results last night from 23:00 to 3:00. I think that at 3:00 some interfernces started.
And here are the complete results from today.
Hi,
For last night :
Very good results at the start, after resolving another QRM problem : phone line connected to the laptop produced carriers on 6172 and 6177 kHz...
After 23:45 UT, maybe some local QRM started. Computer logged frequency until batteries went off.
73, de Stephane
... of course it was not 6172 and 6177 but 3962 and 3967 kHz... :-)
Here's the channel impulse response diagram for last night.
Hi again,
For earlier today :
I wanted to try 17-18 UT but a complete power failure at my place between 16-17 UT gave me the idea to try to log 3965 without any virtual QRM in the neighborough... Luckily, batteries of the laptop were charged again.
I post it as a comparison with yesterday's listening. No main difference, even worse audio in these 'ideal' conditions, but one can see the same slow SNR rise... that is interesting.
73, de Stephane
No chance for the evening transmission. Strong co-channel interference.
Here is my unattended logging for the afternoon
And here is the evening hour. Actually the first 3 minutes before 19h were quite good, then QRM starting strong (carrier in the middle of the spectrum for the whole hour)
And here is this morning's log. Signal appeared at 7h34. Unattended after 8h30 (so can't exactly say how it goes and no level adjustment was done...)
Hello,
logs from yesterday and today until 18:00
Bernd, DF9RB
This is the afternoon log. Unattended logging, so to be taken for what it is... The SNR's look lower than those I was getting (in general) last year from another home (-I've moved-). So may be I have local noise influence too...
This was the first morning hour. Propagation suddenly turns on at 7h21 here.
And this is the morning unattended log.
Thanks all for your very encouraging reports.
Serait-il possible d'avoir plus de reports de France; merci pour Bordeaux et Strasbourg!
Regards / 73.

Hi all,
Too many switched power supplies around the house and other domestic QRM on this frequency unfortunately, at least with the antenna strung over the roof. Therefore there was no decoded sound. The screen shot was taken on 19th January just after 0700UTC.
Terje
Hi,
What a difference a change in the location of the antenna made! But HCJB on 3955 kHz killed ISSOUDUN at 1600 UT.
Surprisingly good reception for such low power over a pretty good distance.
73
Terje
Hi Simone, Eric, Terje, Bob, Bernd and all...
Thank you for your reports, not bad for "QRP" from Issoudun; could be better with 200 kW like DW but this is not for tomorrow...!
I can see on my side that propagation is not the same from one day to an other but Drm reception is Paris is not easy between about 11:00 and 15:00 UTC despite the low bit-rate but if we add some dB, it could be OK (more power...). I am a bit surprised by the european coverage (Germany, UK, Swiss...)
Regards / 73.

Hi,
Obviously not great reception at this distance but some quite good periods (log is from 23:20 to 18:00 tonight).

Hi Jacques,
some results fromthis morning. Signal dropped from S9 to S5-S7. That is still enough for good decooding, but the local interference causes some dropouts.
Salut Jacques
The same segment as Carsten's in Switzerland, just for comparison. Just now at 1310 UT there is no decoding and the S-meter rests around S2.

Hello to all,
First, a good example of the slow fall of SNR and decoded audio, this morning.
Stephane
... Then, the slow rise of the SNR and decoded audio this afternoon. Good conditions of listening from 14:55 to 15:15 (programme 'La Danse des Mots', news, and the start of the programme about the Victor Hugo museum in Paris).
SNR peaked 18,4 dB at 15:12 UTC.

Salut Jacques,

Simone
To early during the day for this frequency.
Bernd, DF9RB
Hello to all,
Almost perfect listening last night... Though I would make a remark for such 11kbps broadcast : it would be better producing all of them by phone :-) Journalist talking in studio gets harmonics and weird noise with the audio compression, that people talking on the phone (guests, correspondents) don't get.
I don't know anything about all of that, but maybe it's because of the different audio treatment for studio and phone sources ?
73, de Stephane
Really not bad for just one 1kW. Even at daylight there is a good reception possible here in Frankfurt. Dropouts are only caused by local interferences.
And once again nearly perfect this evening.
Thank you Simone, Carsten, Stéphane, Bernd, Terje,Bob, John and all for your various and interesting reports on our low power 3965 kHz Drm transmission.
Not yet received complains from US hams about QRM like for 3993 / 3995 kHz...!

Salut Jacques and all,
Quite good for a couple of hours this morning until the signal started to weaken.
I fiddled with an 18 dB gain broad band antenna amplifier towards the end. Interesting to see that the increase in the input signal is'nt very relevant to what you get back in form of decoded audio. The "quality" of the DRM signal seems to be much more important. When the channel impulse response is deteriorating, no amplifier can make up for it.
Terje
Hello to all,
It is interesting to see 3965 at 1900 UT now that I don't have interference from Biblis anymore. SNR is rising during the hour. I'll try 2000-2100 UT soon.
73, de Stephane
Salut Jacques, all,

(see 1909 log), taking into account the very low power this is better than many other DRM-"broadcasts" I've seen so far.
After 20:00h heavy qrm from 3955kHz (SNR vs. carrier shows significant drop on left side)
Log at this night in Poland and of 21.03.2006
Hello to all,
Here will be the results of logs made in the house where I started shortwave listening, 10 years ago, in the country 85km north from Paris. A local powerline produces heavy noise on all shortwave bands, I noticed it when I was trying AM DX listening before (I have much better results in city center), now I see it is a catastroph for DRM listening.
My first attempt last august produced no results (0 audio) for a whole week, but I had just received my DWT and had only the long wire and let the laptop plugged on AC power.
Now I let the computer run on batteries only and use the Degen loop antennas. Results aren't great at all. The only DRM services I could listen (I mean really listen) were DW 6130, TDP 6015, RTL 5990 in the evening and DW 3995 (depending the hours !). No stable result at all for any of the other frequencies. I tried everything, antenna azimuth, indoor/outdoor, batteries/AC power (sometimes better)... There is still too much QRM from this power line. I can let the address to anyone who wanna try some test some day, because I think this place reflects the reception conditions that many listeners may have when they buy a DRM receiver.
So... I wanted to try QRP 3965 at this place, here are the first two logs :
3965 07/04/2006 0917-1012 UTC (batteries only)
3965 07/04/2006 1543-1722 UTC (batteries only)
the following in the next post...
... and the evening :
3965 07/04/2006 1940-2056 UTC (AC power)
I forgot : in the log #02, one can see the local sunset at exactly 16:42 UTC that produced this very good reception for a minute.
73, de Stephane
Very interesting Stephane...!
Could you try 25765 kHz from Meudon in your QTH North of Paris?
I managed to identify this transmission (in analog mode) when I was in Clermont sur Oise during a Ham expo in March;
Regards / 73.
Jacques Gruson
bonjour Jacques,
I tried to catch Meudon there, but QRN from power line increases with the frequency and it is absolutely a disaster in these bands (could not listen to 10m-band on my Sony ICF SW7600G for example). So no result so far, and I've left the place now.
Within a few months I will go again there, I will hopefully have my car so I will go away from the house and try to receive in better conditions and various places in Picardy. I will find interesting to try portable reception on various hills on the road southway to Paris. It will be a short test, due to the laptop's batteries :-)
By the way, I only explain the fact that this small power line by this house in the Compiègne area radiates so much around, that because power distribution is locally provided for decades by a small private company -the SICAE- instead than by the national EDF. Maybe SICAE don't have the same way of managing and controlling their power lines than EDF. I will try to learn about power line and QRN below 30 MHz.

Bonjour,

Hi,
Here is an overnight log. It should be noted that the Bandwidth Switch was in "M" instead of "W", which might have impaired the reception somewhat. My mistake. However, no trace of 89 MHz in Switzerland. :D

Salut Jacques,
not too bad after 23:45 with the new configuration.

Hi Simone, Terje, Daniel from Paris and all!
Thanks for various reports on 3965 kHz transmission going better in relation with the current season change.

A very stable reception from 0632-0810 UTC. After that I switched to a South American TX around 0826.
Great results last night.
@ Jacques: Has the schedule been changed (thought it starts at 2300)?
Simone
A little bit weaker this morning towards the end of the log.
Even a little bit weaker this morning again...
Very good results last night apart from one deep dip at 00:30 (no idea what happened)
Simone
Good results form 23:50 last night.
Simone
In parallel to the MR I logged TDF this morning for 38 minutes, then I switched to 6.175 MHz. That is the reason for this relatively short but very good log.
Looks like there are some Tx problems causing breaks in transmission, good results when there was a signal, again no signal right now.

Not bad at 1 kW power level. :)
The northwestern half of my dipole as L-antenna seems to give a little better SNR than the full dipole with parallel wire feeder.

Some lightning crashes and the pulses of the electric fence of the nearby farm are reducing the available SNR.

noise and interference
Good result at the begining (1017TU), but the propagation decreased and reduced the quality of the transmission even for a closest station (Issoudun is at less than 40 km from home !!).

DRM on 75m at nighttime does not work well and in the morning there is this terrible AM signal 10 kHz down.
AS usual, the propagation decreases when the sun shines. In addition, it was a long QSB period. After this record, the SNR was better !

Impulse response looked terrible but demodulation was OK.
The system clock was 4 minutes late.
8 days hours of reception at Paris.

seems like Romainville Tx was not working, Daniel?
Jacques
The first 70 minutes from 06 UTC were quite good, then the it gradually got worse with the increasing daylight.
Sorry, I made a mistake in my last message which was about SFN 999 kHz.
Thanks to Terje, Fritz, Daniel and Michel for sending reports.
Regards / 73.

Only 1kW and good until 09:00 UTC with inverted L antenna pointing northwest, a little weaker on the T-antenna, and no audio with the dipole.
Salut la Liste
Hello everybody,
Please find a long listening report from the center of France (41 km from Issoudun !!!!).
Best regards
Michel
Here is a 55 minutes not so good log.
Results from last night, had not tried that for a while (not much chance to get a signal during summer).
Simone
Quite good for this low power TX in South East Germany.

Unattended overnight log.
Not bad between 2330-0430 UTC. I´m not sure, but later maybe local interference are the problem.
Salut Simone, Bernd and All,
Not too bad... I have asked colleagues in ISS to change bit rate to 14 kb/s in order to improve receiving conditions realibility (16 QAM, r=0,6). Some of you will not be happy because of impaired audio quality; sorry for that!
Jacques
Salut Andy,
Quite good near Munich! Sorry I got your message after sending mine...
Jacques
An unattended overnight log. The "before-dawn-hole" is present, just like the 3.995 MHz from W-tal used to look. Otherwise very stable during the night. Unfortunately, around 0630 UTC severe splatter from a Dutch AM service with a signal 40-45 dB stronger than RFI 10 kHz down ruined the reception. Switching the RX to a slightly narrower 455 kHz IF filter helped a bit.
Deux heures de réception diurne à Paris.
