Read this article (http://www.rwonline.com/reference-room/guywire/gw.2005.10.19.shtml) on Radio World Online about problems IBOC is facing in the US.

I think that any hybrid digital + analogue AM mode mode that attempts to prevent old AM receivers from becoming obsolete, will be doomed in the end since it will always either decrease the quality of the AM service and/or increase total bandwidth requirements to a point where interference with other stations becomes unacceptable.

Nobody wants to be a pioneer. In the case of TV, the "kill date" for NTSC keeps getting moved because nobody in Congress wants to risk their re-election by being the one to make their constituent's TV's useless.

IBOC seems to me to be another one of those "Let the Market Decide" policies like AM stereo was. I'm not aware that anyone is selling an AM stereo car radio, nor transmitting AM stereo any more.
The listener response did not justify the expense.
