View Full Version : 5875 kHz BBC WS from Rampisham
Hi all,
BBC World Service now on 5875 kHz // 9470 kHz. Rampisham?
James, is this only a test or a regular transmission?
73, Klaus
The new hours on this frequency are:
0700-0830 UT and 1800-1900 UT.
73, Klaus
Hi all,
a few minor dropouts, no audible dropouts when listening with the DRMSWR

Hi all,
strong and stable signal this morning, see attachment

Evening broadcast could have been nice, if not.............

Hi all,

Hi all,

Good signal, but a little boring two tone programme and funny text. :D
Hi all,
good results with both modes today, mode A until 0740, then the normal configuration was used, see attachemnt
73, Simone
Hi all,
still bad conditions at the start of this transmission (as at the end of 7320 kHZ), improving again soon, see attachment
73, Simone
Hi all,
datastream problems until 0730, good results then, btw without the MM service, see attachment
73, Simone
Hi,
Very good reception at the start of my listening time, 07:30 UTC. Then at 08:15 the signal started to become weaker, just to be lost at 08:22 UTC.
Hi all,
quite good in the beginning. Starting 18h20 signal dropped.
73, Daniel
Today almost perfect

Hi all,
Here is a short report until QRT just before 0830 UTC. Quite good reception despite a queer looking channel impulse response.

Hi all,
an even stronger signal at the beginning this evening than in the morning, donīt know what caused the problems in the second half
73, Simone
Good results this morning. Signal was strong in the begining and went weaker after 8 UTC.
Hi all,
strong and stable signal this morning, great results using the DWT. The dip in the graph at 0724 was due to changes on the datastream, better audioquality today then using 20.48 kbps, probably the EPG is much slower now (only 0.5 kbps), still not using UEP anymore.
73, Simone
Attached the result from last night. Same behaviour as in Simones log.
73, Daniel
Hi all,
good results this evening in the car, mostly mobile reception, I suspect the only big dropout was my fault ;)

73, Simone
Hi,
here is a report of the first 16 minutes. Strong signal with excellent reception.
Roland
Hi,
There was a sync loss incident at about 18:54 UTC with a perfect looking spectrum but no audio, this was suddenly followed by an exploding spectrum about half a minute later, see attached screenshot.
Roland
And here is my report on the last 15 minutes.
Roland
Hi all,
strong co-channel interferer in the second half this evening, like last Saturday, seems the interferer is only there on Saturdays, did not notice it on other days the last week.

Hi all,
great results, just one dip when the "exploding spectrum" occured again at 1854, like two days ago.

perfect results this evening, using the DWT, see attachment
73, Simone
Quite good over here as well.
Roland
Good results this morning with DWT. The first 2 dropouts were caused by myself, I think. The last was due to low signal at the end.
Hi,
Let me just add to the previous entry: Good here too...
Terje
Hi all,
great results using the DWT this morning, see attachment
@ Carsten: signal strength indicated by the DWT was 53- 51 dbĩV, using DX mode
73, Simone
Hi all,
pretty good results until 1830, then the co-channel interferer started again like always on Saturdays, seems to be a regular transmission at this time on Saturdays.
73, Simone
Same here, good until 18:30. Co-channel interference should be avoided!
Hi all,
some problems at the beginning this morning, transmission started late at 0713, again a break at 0721- 0727, see attachment
73, Simone
... and perfect results this evening
Simone
Hi all,
perfect results again this morning using the DWT
Simone
Also perfect results this morning with DWT indoor.
And here are the evening results as a comparision between DWT and AOR 7030. Both with 100%.
Hi all,
good decoding but low SNR with a Sony SW7600GR/ telescopic antenna, that I am currently working on. The two dropouts caused by myself making some adjustments.
Simone
Hi all,
strong signal and good results this evening, see attachment
(not sure about the dropout at 1846, might be the exploding spectrum problem again?)
Simone
Hi all,
quite good, except the exploding spectrum (like at 1851) problem seems to occur preferably during this hour.
Simone

Good signal and good audio with that low bitrate:
Hi all,
perfect results this evening, EPG has been removed, higher audio bitrate again like already mentioned on 7320 kHz
Simone
Same stable results as on Monday (except the higher bitrate). Seems to be a well chosen frequency.
Hi,
if anyone can measure the relative delay between the Rampisham and Kvitsoy transmissions, we will try and steer the network into the target area.
regards
Julian
(BBCWS)
Hi Julian,
I think this requires special equipment. Even if I let run two instances of a DRM decoder on the same PC, both decoding the same DRM IF signal, there will always be an audible delay between both audio outputs.
If one repeats this experiment several times by stopping and restarting both decoders again and again, this amount of delay doesn't seem to be constant but somehow seems to depend on the state of the operating system at the very moment when the decoding programs were started.
Roland

Hi Julian,
Did you mean this?
Terry
Hi Roland,
OK, I see the point. Sorry I got it wrong.
Terje
@ Digger,
Hi Terje,
the task is to minimize the DRM bitstream delay between both TX sites, which are running in a MFN (multi frequency network), so that a receiver which switches from one to the other, will not notice a time skip in audio because both transmitters transmit the same data at the same time. Not so easy to adjust with both stations not using exactly the same hardware.

Hi all,
A very good to excellent result today.
John
Hi Roland,
thanks for a perfect explanation
Hi Julian,
I think, the best place to measure the delay between both data streams off the air would be Rampisham.
From reports on the forum, Kvitsoy should be well receivable in southern England, at least when Rampisham is not transmitting on 9410 kHz simultaneously.
Using two identical DT700 monitoring receivers, one tuned to Kvitsoy, the other to Rampisham itself and recording the audio output, one on the left and the other on the right audio channel on a PC, one would get an audio file from which the time delay could be precisely measured using a wave analyzer PC program.
I would recommend the Greenwich time signal for this because it produces a sharp reference.
Roland
Hi Roland,
sounds like a good idea - I'll talk to James.
Julian
Hi Julian,
I think the measurement shoud be done in the target area of both the transmissions rather than at the Tx control ouput at Rampisham.
And I donīt have to wait for the time signal, there are lots of chances if you look at the waveform analyzer.
Simone
Perfect reception but I listened only for a short period of time.
Roland
Quite good reception this morning with DWT.
Hi all,
good results with the DWT/ loop indoors, but not as good as usually on the longwire
Simone
Hi all,
good results at the beginning using the loop antenna indoors with the FRG100, in the last 30 min the usual interference
Simone
Perfect this morning with DWT
Hi all,
also perfect results using the idoor loop with the DWT and in the last 25 min with the FRG100, see attachment

good results, one of the dips occured also on the transmission from Norway, see comparison attached
Simone

Also perfect this morning.
Also perfect this evening with DWT. Transmission started with beeps instead of BBCWS. Reaaly good music programme in this hour.

Hi Paul,
in my location at times when HF does not work I get a perfect signal on MF, so usually I am pretty close to 99% (Tx problems included) on average for the 18 hours of daily transmissions of the BBC WS!

Simone
A bit of fading and some interference from above.
