View Full Version : 0855 kHz DLF/ DRadio Wissen from Berlin-Britz
Hi,
reception of DLF's stereo signal was quite good for long periods but also bad during others when the signal faded out or when other on-channel stations were booming in so strong that their AM audio could be heard through the DRM signal.
An HVXC stream, labeled "wir über uns" (we about us), transmitted at a bitrate of 5.42 kbps was also broadcast in parallel.
Audio quality was quite good, however, the audio spectrum extended only up to 11 kHz.
I know, that a thread already exists on Deutschlandradio 855 kHz but with this now being Deutschlandfunk, I have opened a new one.

A reception-report for 855 kHz.

A little bit of signal here over the weekend:
Hello to all,
Unexpected report with a pretty good signal here. I always try to catch DLF for a few minutes, 3 or 4 times a week, but it rarely raises over 6 or 10 dB because of the spanish co-channel in AM. Today I could even enjoy a whole minute of classical music without dropout ! It was worth listening for about 10 minutes long.
By the way, all out of topic then : when I travelled to Berlin last october, 855 was always better than 177 (because of QRM). When I arrived at the hotel in Charlottenburg, I had a perfect reception of 177, so I put off my computer and went away to enjoy the city. When I went back, reception of 177 was definitely ruined by local QRM for the next three days... :-( Indeed 855 staid good the whole time I staid in Berlin. 1485 was audible in AM but almost no signal caught with the DWT. And 693 couldn't work too (louder signal than 1485).
I did not have yet the habit of unplugging the AC adaptor of the laptop and other things around to get less QRM and then have a real evaluation of the DRM signal. That also ruined my reception of Putbus 729 when I travelled just after to Rügen (signal but no audio decoded). I saw the antenna(s) after Putbus railway station, on the road, but I didn't go back there to take a few pictures or try some direct listening with the laptop. A thing to be made next time :-)
I have screen captures and a RealAudio recording of these receptions, that was the time my Digital World Traveller was still new for me and I didn't have DreaM to make logs. I'm really learning a lot about QRM and propagation while DRM-DXing.

Hi Stephane, guess you are using the wire antenna with came with this receiver. From my own experience I have noticed you get a lot better reception, especially on LW, using a loop or rod. The noise level is generally lower and some noise sources can be nulled out all together. Don't know how easy it would be to interface a ferrite rod or loop to this type receiver though.
Richard
Hi Richard, and all,
You are right, I get all noise and no directional reception with this wire. I already tried to connect an old loop antenna from a hi-fi system which i plugged to the DWT with the end cable of a former headphone system :-)))
I discovered strangely that this system, though not working at all for a directional use on LW/MW, worked perfectly for DW on 3995 kHz... I also just noticed an increased SNR for MW on 855, 1296 and 1485 tonight if I plugged the wire to the 'loop' plug and the home-made 'loop' (if this is really electrically-speaking a loop after my basic work) to the 'wire' plug, and made the DWT receiving through the wire plug.
This log is the result I obtained tonight on 855. Tonight I could get the HVXC+ service from time to time. I can always listen to RNE (Spain) in AM on the frequency.

Hi Stephane,
Maybe for a better response try using a ferrite rod salvaged from an old receiver. You could wind or use try using the existing coil connected between the antenna input and receiver ground. Don’t know why they use two sockets? Am guessing the ‘wire’ connection has a higher input impedance, producing a bigger voltage swing at the rf amplifier stage. Probably best to use this socket in this case. No joy trying to receive 885 in my apartment in the UK unfortunately!
Regards, Richard
Ooops!
I tuned to France Bleue on 864 kHz when I happened to see something like a DRM Burst on the left. Yes indeed, it was Deutschlandfunk on 855 kHz.
Sorry I am not able to get a better reception of this low power Tx.
When I tuned across the band last night, I came across this transmission and I thought I give it a try. The loop's position had to be adjusted very carefully.

Not bad with Truck Radio transmitting in AM on the same frequency from Nordkirchen very close to here:
Hi,
I notice that there are now three different services from DLF on 855 kHz:
DLF @ 17.9 kbps
Wir ueber uns @ 4.7 kbps
Nachrichten @ 1 kbps
Too much co-channel interference which cannot be nulled on the loop.

Here at the dutch border it is just not strong enough to override our local 5kW TruckRadio on the same frequency.
Hi,
Here is my reception of the 4.6 kbps 'Wir ueber uns' program from DLF.
Time: 05:13 - 05:31 UTC on Feb. 26 2007.
Hi all.
Small signal pick up on MW 954Khz Deutschlandfunk.
An unattended log for 855 kHz. Looking for BBC, caught DLF - well...
Caught and caught... At least the Service Label verifies that it was NOT the BBC on 855.
Perfect results this morning using the Sony SW1(ferrite antenna) indoors in Berlin.

Unattended log, not much at this time of year.
Since when the 2nd programme is called "Nachrichten" (News) instead of "Wir über uns" (We about us)?
Since when the 2nd programme is called "Nachrichten" (News) instead of "Wir über uns" (We about us)?
I live in the Netherlands (Amsterdam) and only have a MR27024. Yesterday evening I could receive DLF on 855kHz, including the Nachrichten HVXC stream. The last one only gave some small sound burst. Can anyone tell this newbie what program/media is broadcast on the HVXC stream? (I know it is a low bitrate method for broadcasts)
It was the first time I had two streams on DRM on my radio. Very nice to try it out.

Hi,
You know that it is the darkest day of the year when you receive a 10 kW Tx at 13:00 UTC and distance to my QTH is > 800 km.
Just a short log of the 4.66 kbps HVXC Nachrichten audio service.
Merry X-Mas to everyone!
Hi all.
I pick up small part of signal for first time on MW 855Khz .
But DRM via skywaw on MW is not nice .Very slow fading from max to min signal. So 50% of time is no audio.
edit: post moved to existing thread, Simone

Truck Radio has given up on mediumwave.
The AM TX Nordkirchen on 855 kHz was switched off.
Perhaps it's worth to listen if Berlin-Britz is better in the west now.

Hi,
30 minutes of DLF. 3 out of 4 services running: Journaline is OK here! (not on BBC_DW). Time: 18:18-18:48 UTC. CDA: 22%.
Hi,
Journaline is OK here! (not on BBC_DW).
Btw, meanwhile journaline on BBC&DW service can also be decoded with FhG decoder 2.0.38
Good results in a hotel room in Berlin- Spandau (the deep dip was probably my fault)

Hi,
An early start of the morning listening to DLF: 04:52-05:16 UTC.
Three different services active + text messages:

HVXC is very robust but sounds terrible at 2 kbps.
Nice to see DRadio Wissen (http://www.dradiowissen.de) as a new channel on this frequency!
DRadioWissen started today, reception is not reliable here but always some good periods here after dark.
Simone
... at least good enough to get some audio decoded, which sounded quite good and also received some slides.
Simone
Not too bad despite strong co-channel AM interference, best time around 1630, MM service working fine.
Simone
Results from today, besides the news the MOT slides also showed a photo of the DLR headquarters, the former RIAS building.
Simone
Some good periods this afternoon.
Simone
Good results from 1605 this afternoon.

Hi,
All three services was available when I gave DRadio Wissen a try.
Time: 17:47 - 18:20 UTC. But it was just during the first 20 minutes that any audio came trough. So a total of 14 % CDA is not worth reporting... ;)
