Another DRM capable radio has been announced, to be shown to the public at the Berlin Funkausstellung (2 September 2005) and later to the broadcasting trade at IBC 2005 in Amsterdam. This one is a joint venture between a German company, AFG Engineering GmbH and Hong Kong based Himalaya (Power) Electronics.

The radio is driven by a Blackfin processor, a platform which - the manufacturers say - is a low-cost solution as well as easy on battery consumption. Since the Blackfin can be programmed, this platform supports several other analogue and digital radio standards in addition to DRM. Details have not yet been given on what these are.

Media Network will examine the first samples at IFA Berlin and report back on this weblog. 2005 is a crucial year for DRM, since the world standard now needs a range of capable receivers to make it commercially viable. More details about DRM at their website.
