View Full Version : 1296 kHz BBC WS from Orfordness
Quite a number of fade-outs today but the local interference level was also high with my neighbour's low-voltage lighting being switched on. Still good to listen to however.
Nice to hear that the sync loss problem is being investigated closer.
Roland
Hi all,
quite good again last night, maybe a local problem at the beginning ;)
@ James: Thanks for the information on the sync loss problem, it occured again 3 times, see attachment

The first dropout was caused by plugging from the wire to the loop antenna, the others wasn't me.
Some dropouts, partly due to a high local noise level.
Roland
Hi all,
good conditions last night, all dips in the graph Tx related (sync loss problem and/or interruptions). Interestingly the interruptions also occured simultaneously on HF (5875 kHz)

Similar problems as seen on shortwave today could be observed on mediumwave as well
Roland
Hi all,
some longer breaks in transmission last night, in the first hour it did not look like it is worth recording a logfile,
later good results when there was a signal, also the sync loss problem occured again, see attachment
Simone
Hi all,
no such breaks in transmission as the night before, again a few sync losses, some caused by interruptions of the signal, see attachment
Simone
Hi,
partly a weak signal last night.
Roland
Hi all,

Btw local sunrise now at 0610 UTC.
Simone
Hi all,
quite good last night, besides the known problems, see attachment
73, Simone
Local noise level was high and there was also quite a bit of fading. I noticed a sync loss at 22:27 but there may have been others as well.
Roland
Hi all,
some dropouts when the signal was weaker from 1750- 1850, quite good for the rest last night, sync loss problem occured only once, see attachment
Simone
Hi all,
good results at the start this morning (sync loss problem once) compared to the strange results yesterday which might have been Tx related, but no signal today after 0704 until I stopped the logfile at 0850, see comparison with yesterday attached
Simone
edit: Transmission was continued from 0945
Hi all,
a few dropouts last night at times of deep fading, but also interruptions and the sync loss problem occured, see attachment
Simone
Hi all,
pretty good results early this morning until there was again a break in transmission, see attachment
Simone
Hi all,
good results also after transmission was continued until signal got weaker at 1230!
Simone
Good also during daylight with the EWE-antenna! A few deep fadings and also some interruptions in data stream. I presume this because the signal was not weak during these interruptions.
Bernd, DF9RB
Hi,
not a good result last night with a sometimes long impulse response that seemed to be a foretaste of what's coming up in winter.
Roland
Hi,
1296 kHz was only 84% in Helsinki
Seppo
Hi,
today, I modified a cheap PLL LW/MW/SW/FM single conversion receiver which I had bought on ebay for 1.51 EUR + postage (which amounted to 5.90 EUR, a lot more than the receiver itself). The receiver is not yet fully optimized for DRM and I am still working on improving it but reception on it was already remarkably good.
The largest dropout in the log was caused by myself. There seemed to be sync losses at 22:10 and 22:49 UTC.
The receiver with its built-in ferrite antenna was inductively coupled to the loop by placing it about 30 centimeters away.
Roland
Hi all,
good conditions, most dips caused by the known problems (snyc loss problem and interruptions)
Simone
This morning we installed an alternate DRM exciter to see if this helps with some of the problems. This in service at 12:00 on 2nd. So we are very interested to see reports of any breaks or sync losses.
Thanks, James
Hi,
here is a four hour log, transmission continued after midnight local time and still does.
There were many moments when the impulse response looked bad and when signal strength was also momentarily low. This caused quite a number of dropouts. I did not notice any reception problems apart from during those moments. Except from the occasional pulse spike, there was no noticeable local interference. I also did not see any signal interruptions during my logging period.
Unfortunately, reception quickly seems to become worse as winter approaches.
Roland
Hi all,
lot of fading but good results, two dropouts during deep fading, no sync losses or interruptions, see attachment
Simone
Btw, there still was a signal before 0500 this morning.

The winter conditions with weird impulse response at night are coming again. Later after sunrise the loop usually is not as stable as the wire antenna.
Hi,
just good enough for listening, 94% decoded.
73, Seppo
Hi,
much better conditions than yesterday. Reception was excellent. Unfortunately, I could only listen for a little more than an hour. I did not notice any technical problems.
Roland
Hi James, all,
no sync losses/ interruptions, so after a long time again a 100% result for the nearly 5 hours that I recorded the logfile last night :)!
Simone
Hi,
a period with good reception in Munich this morning but I tuned to another frequency when there was a deep fade-out.
Roland
Hi,
rather good today. 96% decoded.
Seppo
Hi,
there were a few periods when Orfordness' signal faded out but in between, signal was quite strong and the impulse response looked perfect, much unlike the day before yesterday.
Roland
Hi all,
again no Tx related problems last night, 3 dips in the graph at times of deep fading, see attachment
Simone
Some results from the early morning. Not good.
Hi all,
good results this morning until 0900, except the dropouts in the first 10min, not sure what caused the problems. Later no Tx related dropouts.
Simone
Not so bad today. No problems with the impulse response but signal lost strength during the course of my logging period.
I did not notice any technical problems on the transmitted signal, the old "rejuvenated" Thales seems to do its job perfectly.
Roland
Hi all,
excellent results last night, strong and stable signal, no Tx problems, perfect decoding, see 6 hours log attached
Simone
... and also quite good this morning until 0930 (sunrise 0623), a few dropouts when the signal was weaker around 0600, see attachment
Simone
Thanks for the posts so far, it seems no "sync loss" or short breaks in the RF field strength (not fading! the previous reported problems) have been observed since the 2nd November? Please keep posting observations here! Thanks. James
Hi,
Strong co-channel interference at times but also a good signal in between. No problems that were associated with the impulse response.
The big dropout was of my own making, I accidentally destroyed the power connection and had to resolder it.
No trace of any transmitter problems.
Roland

Hi all,
BBC 1296 kHz was strong today in Helsinki. 99% decoded.

A very good result considering the fact that the local noise level was high and that there was a strong on-channel signal at times.

Roland
I "love" totally automated stations with no human being around to fix this. What a luck that there are still no DRM Radios in the stores, so nobody will take a note of this.
I really miss the music from the WOMAD music festival which would have been broadcast today.
Roland
Sorry for the fault, we never saw this one before, so it is important to find out the cause rather than simply rebooting all the equipment. It could be at the studio or transmitter site, as from the description it is not obvious what is the cause. So it will be fixed in the morning once we find out exactly what the cause is.

Roland
Hi James, all,
the problem ist still the same at the beginning of the transmission this morning, so good for investigating whatīs causing the problem.

Hi Roland, it looked like a software fault rather than any transmitter fault, so I was expecting the same fault this morning. In fact it seems the Thales Modulator PC at Orfordness has crashed so the fault was at Orfordness.

High but not at all stable SNR. I wonder why. Seems not only to be the usual sensitivity of medium wave to local noise.
As I can see a carrier in the center of the input spectrum and also it is getting the later the worse I guess it is on-channel interference to blame, coming from the east (?)

Hi,
there were quite a number of dropouts during a certain period, reception became a lot better later. I turned the loop slightly once but I didn't take down the exact time, it probably coincides with the improvement in reception but the plot doesn't give the impression of a sudden change, perhaps it was just a result of propagation conditions.

Not bad until Dream suddenly showed a much lower SNR than the DRMSW. I then stopped Dream and tried a resync but to no avail.
Roland
I restarted Dream a while after the decoding result had become bad and I also did a comparison with the DRMSW. Interestingly and quite different from normally observed behaviour, the DRMSW produced chunks of audio data consisting of single words or syllables during times when Dream produced no audio at all. Dream's SNR was also significantly lower, see screenshot.
Roland
Hi all,
no surprise about the results last night, as tests back in August this year had already shown that mode A works much better than mode B on this transmission. Interesting to see that the current Tx problem also occured with this datastream.
Btw yesterday the transmission had started with the regular datastream in the morning, donīt know when it was changed.
Hopefully they will be back using the normal datastream soon (currently it is still using mode B).
Simone
Hi all,

I also noticed yesterday that the decoding result was influenced a lot more by on-channel signals than it usually is when mode A is being used. With mode A, an on-channel carrier that is 20 dB stronger does not necessarily cause a dropout. With mode B however, even a 10 dB stronger carrier often caused an audio dropout.
Roland
Hi all,
many dropouts last night (at least 1 was Tx related), still using mode B, required SNR is too high with the current configuration for my location, see attachment

Simone
Hi all,
good conditions last night, no problems during my listening period, but transmission did not stop as scheduled, it was on all night.
Simone
edit: Sorry, I guess I was wrong assuming transmission did not stop as scheduled.
... and also great results for 4 hours this morning, see attachment
Simone
Hi,
strong local interference and fading on Orfordness' signal caused a not so good result.
Contrary to Simone's statement, I registered a regular end of transmission at the usual time, see screenshot.
Roland
No pleasure to listen, as usual for me. Signal collapses quite often and then there is the strong spanish station.
Hi,
good periods with pleasant listening but also a period with fading.
Roland
Hi all,
perfect results from 1630- 2300 last night, see attachment
Simone

Driving home from near Duesseldorf to 48712 Gescher via A3, A2, A31.
Listening to the BBC with 21.6kbps on mediumwave is a real relief after spending some time with the bad audio from Taldom on 49m.
Quite a steady signal and a rather good result today.
Roland
Hi all,
nearly perfect last night, see attachment

Driving home from near Osnabrueck to 48712 Gescher via A30, A31.
Another perfect result on 1296 kHz! DRM is real fun this way!
Excellent reception despite a high local noise level.
Roland
Rather good tonight.
Roland
not a good result tonight. There were periods with weak signal.
Roland
No success with this frequency.
"Only" 98.9% today but very good over long periods and very pleasant listening.
Roland
Quite a number of dropouts today but also very pleasant listening during 'International Recital' with excellent audio quality.
Roland
Hi,
one large dropout during fading but quite good for the rest of the time.
Roland
Not so good tonight.
Roland
Perfect throughout!
Roland
Just one dropout due to fading.
Roland
Not a good result today. When I tuned in, signal was weak, interference from distant stations was strong and the impulse response didn't look good either.
Signal improved a bit later but the overall result was not a good one.
