View Full Version : DW Taldom 7515kHz
Hi from a newcomer
On 2005-07-11 at 1949z I was able to receive Deutsche Welle on 7515kHz rather than the advertised 7390kHz from Taldom.
Very stable reception in Torino, Italy, using an IC706MKiiG and a 2.8m long center-loaded vertical on the balcony.
Is this a permanent frequency change? It has not been advertised on DW's schedule, nor on drm.org "LiveBroadcast" page.
The attached image shows Dream and the receiver during reception.
Please, which email address should I use to submit a reception report and qualify for a QSL? :)

I think that it comes from Taldom. But the frequency is not clear. I have something inside the DRM spectrum as you can see in the snr spectrum. This needs a 24 dB or higher SNR for good audio decoding.
EDIT: Interfering signal disapeared just after 19:00 UTC :)

Hi Carsten,
it works perfectly well even in moments when the SNR is just 22 dB. According to my experience it would also work well with an SNR of only 19 dB, at least with my receiving setup but perhaps the result depends on the kind of phenomenon that is limiting the SNR.
Roland
Hi,
good reception on this frequency during my logging period which I accidentally ended at 20:31 UTC, but reception continued like that until now (20:55).
There was a little interference from Radio Sofia Bulgaria and its more than +/- 10 kHz wide broadcast on 7505 kHz for a few minutes just after 20:30 UTC.
It seems to have become a fashion to use extremely wide bandwidths on HF. I have seen it a lot recently.
Roland
Hi Andrew and all,
pretty good until 2054, then a period with strong interference, see attachment

Here exactly the same interference as in Carsten's SNR screenshot.
At least for me this is no real NIB frequency.
To the end the skip got too long for me and I ended up in the dead zone.
But good propagation so far if you can find a better frequency.
After 19:00 I had no interferences anymore. Frequency was quite clear, I only had maybe a local interference around 7519-7521 khz, but it was very weak. At the end signal got much weaker so no audio.
Hi Andrew,
very good reception today. Signal was always quite strong today. Between 21:22 and 21:30 there was a carrier around 7511 khz. The audio led turned red, but there were no droupouts audible.
Hi Andrew,
pretty good results yesterday, see attachment
73, Simone
I just listened from 19:10 UTC until now.
Audio was only 50% with Mini Windom Antenna.
Could be improved up to 100% for one hour and 95% the last 30 minutes by using a Grahn GS3/ML2 Loop Antenna.
Exact tuning is not quite easy with a hardware receiver, where you have neither direct audio feedback nor instant visual information about signal quality.
When I have got more experience with my hardware I will post a report in the receiver and antenna forum.
Greetings from Hamburg!
I'm not quite sure, why the snr was 4 db lower than the last days, but still perfect reception. I think that the new frequency is a very good choice.
Hi Andrew and all,
good results again tonight, see attachment

16th of July, good results from 19 till 20UTC, started with 26-27dB, reception was possible till 21.17, after that time - nothing
Hi,
a good signal but also some interference from below.
Roland
Hi,
Some good reception periods.
regards
Bob
Very good. Couldn't be any better.
Quite good, the dropouts were caused by a strong single carier on 7511 khz.
Hi all,
good results tonight, see attachment

Close to perfect, even with heavy thunderstorms in the begining.
Hi all,
tonight almost perfect.

Some problems at the begining, maybe interference. Later perfect.

Hi,
a very strong signal tonight.
Shortly after 21:00 UTC, the TX went off the air, but according to schedule, aren't they supposed to continue?
Well, I switched over to mediumwave anyway.
Roland
Well, strong and perfect as usual, but TX was switched off at 21 UTC:confused:

Good signal here, but not so stable condx with rapidly changing SNR.
Hi all,
Also today stopped the transmissions on 2100 instead of 2300 utc, just as yesterday.
Beside this small problem the results are good.
Kind regards.
Jos.
Once again perfect. Why does it stop at 21 UTC now? BTW 17.4bps just in mono would sound better.
Hi all,
quite a lot of interference here at my location. Signal stopped at 21h00 as Carsten already mentioned.

Not to bad at all.
Paul
Perfect result last night.
73, Daniel
Perfect last night. Still wondering why DW stops this transmission so early. A complete nighttime trial on this frequency would be very interesting, because the 3995 khz fails in most of the nights.
Hi all,
good results again this evening and more reliable than during the two hours from Taldom in the morning

Just a short report.
I always wonder why speech sounds so strange on this stereo transmission. Does one perhaps use an automatic audio gain control working independently on both audio channels on an analogue feed from satellite RX to DRM encoder?
Roland

Only a short log of the last 3/4 hour.
Looks nice, doesn't it?
I noticed a strange "metallic" sound too (listened on my HiFi Loudspeakers)

Wrong label, but perfect reception. Hm, not yet because there were some short dropouts that Dream does not show in its log file, but they were audible.

Strong signal tonight:
Such I like DRM. Nearly uninterrupted reception, although not being able to spread huge amounts of metal in the backyard ;) .
Sound could be better...........
Good night

Hi all,
some dropouts at the beginning, better results from 2000, using DWT/ indoor loop and new version of FhG software.
Simone
Quite good. I think that there were no audible dropouts.
Hi all,
good results except a 20min period with a weak signal, using DWT/ indoor loop, see attachment
Simone
Hi all,
Quite good results today.
Kind regards.
Jos
Quite good reception, but terrible sound quality. There was a lot of noise.
Hi all,
perfect results, see attachment
Btw the noise (up to 4.5 kHz) could still be seen in the audio spectrum when there was no audio in the last minute of the transmission.
Simone
Perfect after 19:30 UTC. Bad sound quality.

Hi Carsten, Jos and others,
since 30-th of October 2005 till 4-th of March 2006 this program will be transmitted on 5820 kHz at 19:00-23:00 UTC.
Thanks for your monitoring and reports. We hope that our audio input will be digital soon and sound quality will be better.
Best regards,
Andrew

but strong interfering carrier for about 20min on 7519kHz
especially in the middle of the transmission.
observed very high doppler delays.
Yesterday and the day before, before shifting to the lower bitrate there was a period of 30' without audio stream at all
On Wednesday evening all was o.k (see second log).
Besides that quite good results on this QRG (as most times).
...back to normal on Saturday.....
Hi all,
Good results today.

Hi Jos,
these dropouts at 20:00 UTC are caused by switching of the code rate and bit rate values by Deutsche Welle from Bonn – we are obtaining their program from a digital stream via satellite now and feed it directly to the transmitter.
Best regards,
Andrew
Hi all,
Results for today - quasi perfect. (Tanks to Andrew about the 2000 dip)

Perfect results. Much better results than on 49m in Winter. But why only 14.5 kbps? 17.4 should work also.
Hi Carsten,
thanks for pleasant news. Regarding the bitrate of 14 kbps - now we are getting the DW program from a digital stream via a satellite and feeding it directly to one of our DRM transmitters. DW switches the DRM modes for their program themselves by MDI as they want. We do not change the modes for DW, though we also think that 17 kbps would be better for these conditions.
Best regards,
Andrew
Hi Andrew,
here is my log from this evening. Same good results like yesterday. I don't know why DW switches down to QAM 16 in the second hour, especially because the second hour is stronger and has higher SNR. After the second hour they switch back to 17.2 kbps because Sines starts then on 5980 khz.
Today I logged with Dream, just to look if there is something on the frequency. Before the transmission starts, there is a data signal. But the frequency is clear during the transmission. In the second hour there started a thunderstorm with lots of flashes here in frankfurt, so many short dropouts were audible.
Hi all,
Quite good today.
Kind regards.
Jos.

Hi all,
The same as yesterday and the day before : OK.
Jos.
Perfect. The only dropout was caused by the mode change.
Also perfect here once again. I really wonder, why the night time reception is so much better than day time reception from Taldom:confused:
Hi all,
Also today OK.

Nearly perfect, but some problems from a data transmission nearby.
Hi all,
For the last time this year,a quite good captation with a smal problem the last 15 min.
Farewell 7515.
Jos.
The 7515 worked really good. Hopefully the 49m band will work as good. Last year it didn't....
